Charlie Kirk on Conservative Youth, Marriage, Parenting and Building Turning Point Student Action Summit

August 1, 2021

Charlie Kirk sits down at Turning Point Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida to discuss the growth of the conservative youth movement and his vision for the future. From starting with just 100 students to building massive gatherings, Kirk shares his candid thoughts on what's broken in modern parenting, why young people should reject secular society's lies about marriage, and how third-wave feminism has damaged family formation. As a newlywed himself, Kirk offers unfiltered advice on taking responsibility early, getting married young, and why parents need to be much tougher on their children.

Building the Conservative Youth Movement

Speaking from Turning Point Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, Charlie Kirk reflected on the growth of the conservative student movement. What started as a gathering of just 100 students has grown into a significant event that continues to expand each year. Kirk emphasized that this is only the beginning, expressing his vision for much larger conservative gatherings.

Kirk challenged conservatives to think bigger about their events and organizing capacity. He pointed out the irony that conferences about nutritional supplements and fitness can draw 100,000 people, yet conservative gatherings haven't reached that scale. His vision extends beyond just hosting conferences—Turning Point is actively establishing high school chapters, college chapters, and doing meaningful grassroots work that creates lasting impact on campuses across America.

The Failure of Modern Parenting

When asked about concerns facing young people and families, Kirk didn't hold back his assessment of modern parenting. He stated bluntly that most parents are doing a terrible job raising their children, particularly when it comes to raising young men and young women with clear values and direction.

Kirk identified a fundamental problem: many men in America don't understand what it means to take responsibility or create meaningful things in their lives. He criticized what he called "bohemian parenting"—the hands-off approach where parents essentially let their children raise themselves. According to Kirk, this approach simply isn't working.

His prescription for parents is straightforward: be harsher on your kids. Parents need to provide actual discipline, take phones away when necessary, and actively parent rather than taking a passive approach. Kirk suggested that many parents simply don't care enough to enforce boundaries and standards with their children.

Rejecting Society's Lies About Marriage

As a newlywed, Kirk spoke passionately about how secular society serves as a non-stop propaganda machine promoting ideas that actually make people miserable. Throughout his life, he was told to delay marriage until 35, to avoid tying himself down, and to prioritize other things over family formation.

Kirk called this messaging an awful lie. His advice to young people is the opposite: get married young and have lots of children. He questioned why society has shifted to worshiping at the altar of corporate America rather than prioritizing family formation and personal relationships.

When students hear this counter-cultural message, Kirk noted, they're often shocked because they've never heard anyone say it before. The dominant cultural narrative has been so one-sided that the simple idea of marrying young and starting a family sounds revolutionary to many young people.

The Impact of Third-Wave Feminism

Kirk identified third-wave feminism as a major contributor to the breakdown of family formation and traditional relationships. When asked directly if feminism plays a role in the problems facing young people and marriage, Kirk responded with an unequivocal yes.

He sees feminist ideology as part of the broader cultural messaging that steers young people away from marriage, children, and traditional family structures in favor of career advancement and individual autonomy above all else.

Hope for the Next Generation

Despite his harsh critique of modern parenting and cultural trends, Kirk expressed that the work being done through Turning Point gives him hope. The students attending the summit and getting involved in the movement represent some of the brightest young minds, capable of reversing negative trends if given proper guidance and support.

The growth of the student movement demonstrates that young people are hungry for an alternative to the secular messaging they receive from every other cultural institution. By establishing chapters in high schools and colleges, Turning Point is creating communities where conservative values can be taught, discussed, and lived out by the next generation.

[00:00] hey everybody welcome to dad talk today

[00:02] we are live in tampa florida for turning

[00:04] point

[00:05] student action summit i'm sitting here

[00:06] with the man himself mr charlie kirk how

[00:08] are you doing great

[00:09] sorry it's been such a delay good to see

[00:11] you so no it's okay man i am so

[00:13] impressed with what you put together

[00:15] there

[00:15] and seeing the next generation that's

[00:17] coming up as a father

[00:18] it gives me a lot of hope we talked to

[00:20] some of your students this past weekend

[00:22] brilliant i mean some of the most

[00:24] brilliant people that we've talked to

[00:26] but

[00:26] i'm just curious man i mean what was it

[00:28] like starting this grassroots movement

[00:30] and getting out here and uh trying to

[00:32] teach these conservative values to our

[00:34] youth

[00:34] yeah i mean it's been an amazing journey

[00:36] the last couple years just to be able to

[00:38] see this grow it started as 100 students

[00:40] nothing before that actually and grow

[00:42] into this unbelievable event

[00:44] praise god right and it's growing and

[00:45] it's growing this is just the very

[00:46] beginning by the way

[00:47] we have to think much bigger as

[00:49] conservatives you know we want tens of

[00:50] thousands of people to gather for days

[00:52] about this i mean we have you know they

[00:55] have conferences about like nutritional

[00:57] supplements they have conferences about

[00:58] fitness where they have a hundred

[00:59] thousand people show up why don't we

[01:01] have that on the conservative side right

[01:02] and it's not just about the conferences

[01:04] by the way we're starting high school

[01:05] chapters we're starting college chapters

[01:07] we're doing things on the ground that

[01:08] are meaningful and that are lasting

[01:10] and it's truly an honor to be part of it

[01:12] now charlie you're a newlywed so yes

[01:14] what are some of the concerns that

[01:15] you've had about

[01:17] okay what are the some of the concerns

[01:21] that you had or that you see for society

[01:23] with

[01:23] fractured families with epidemic of

[01:25] fatherlessness as a young man going into

[01:27] a marriage

[01:28] what concerns did you have or what

[01:30] advice could you give to some of the

[01:31] members yeah i mean well

[01:32] i i first have to put it on parents most

[01:34] parents are absolutely terrible

[01:35] right they don't raise they don't raise

[01:37] young men at all or

[01:38] young women and there's that's just

[01:41] their i don't know what it is

[01:43] i can't quite diagnose it properly i'm

[01:44] sure there's been lots of ink spilled on

[01:46] that topic

[01:47] that's just generally true um also a lot

[01:50] of men

[01:50] in in america they don't really

[01:52] understand what it means to you know

[01:53] take responsibility

[01:55] at all or what it what it means to you

[01:57] know create things that are meaningful

[01:59] and secular society really is a non-stop

[02:01] propaganda arm

[02:03] for things that actually make you

[02:04] miserable and so

[02:06] my whole life i was told don't get

[02:07] married to your 35 you know

[02:09] don't you know don't tie yourself down

[02:12] what a lie it's an awful thing to say

[02:14] you should get married young and have

[02:15] lots of children

[02:16] and you know that's th i'm not really

[02:20] sure where this whole thing started

[02:22] to go like you know bow at the altar of

[02:24] corporate america right but it's a

[02:25] really disgusting thing

[02:26] and when these kids hear that like wow

[02:28] i've never heard that before

[02:30] and so uh you think feminism plays a

[02:32] role of course i mean yeah i mean third

[02:33] wave feminism is

[02:35] huge reason for that yeah totally and

[02:37] that's that's exactly right

[02:39] so yeah charlie if is there any

[02:41] direction that you've seen with the

[02:42] youth that you think that parents could

[02:43] really start to provide a little bit

[02:45] more with them as you've seen yeah i

[02:47] mean they need to be harsher on their

[02:48] kids

[02:49] yeah people absolutely yeah of course i

[02:51] mean they need to take their phones away

[02:53] they need to actually be parents and

[02:55] provide discipline for them i mean we

[02:57] talk about this a lot

[02:58] on our podcast but this kind of like

[03:00] bohemian parenting

[03:02] isn't working right like oh yeah just

[03:04] yeah they're gonna go raise themselves

[03:06] like actually no they're not right so

[03:08] you gotta start

[03:09] maybe the parents are they they don't

[03:11] care right right maybe parents are like

[03:13] whatever there's a lot of them that are

[03:15] that way

[03:17] i want to say thank you so much for your

[03:18] hard work thank you for what you're

[03:20] doing this definitely gives us hope for

[03:21] the next generation and

[03:23] that's it thank you god bless you guys
