Charlie Kirk Uses Chicago Bears Hail Mary Loss as Warning Against Election Overconfidence

Charlie Kirk draws a powerful parallel between the Chicago Bears' devastating Hail Mary loss to Washington and the current state of the 2024 election. With the Bears leading and seemingly victorious with seconds remaining, a defensive back literally turned his back to taunt the crowd during the final play, only to deflect the ball into a receiver's hands for a miraculous loss. Kirk sees this as a divine message: despite favorable polls, betting markets, and momentum, Trump supporters cannot afford to celebrate early or take their eyes off the ballot-chasing work ahead. The next eight days require relentless effort, not Cockiness.

A Message From Divine Through Football

Charlie Kirk shares what he believes was a message sent to him—and to all Trump supporters—through an unexpected source: a Chicago Bears football game. As a Chicago native, Kirk explains that Bears football runs deep in the city's DNA. Growing up in the Chicago suburbs meant hearing stories of the legendary 1985 Bears, Walter Payton, Mike Ditka, and the greatest defense ever assembled. The entire city comes to a standstill during Bears games—traffic clears, businesses close, and everyone tunes in.

While watching the Madison Square Garden rally, Kirk received an ESPN alert about a close game between the Chicago Bears and the Washington Commanders. Washington, led by rookie quarterback Jaden Daniels, entered as a serious playoff contender. The Bears marched down the field with their own rookie quarterback, Caleb Williams, scoring a touchdown with just 23 seconds remaining to take the lead for the first time all game. For a brief moment, Kirk thought this might be the year the Bears make the playoffs—a rarity for the franchise.

The Setup: Victory Seemed Inevitable

After the Bears took the lead, Washington received the ball with virtually no time remaining. The ESPN probability predictor showed Washington had just a 0.1% chance of winning. With only seconds left, Washington's offensive coordinator Cliff Kingsbury, former coach of the Arizona Cardinals, called a setup play that caught the Bears off guard. The Commanders advanced the ball near the 50-yard line, setting up one final Hail Mary attempt.

Kirk notes that successful Hail Mary passes are incredibly rare—he and his colleague Blake could probably count on one hand how many they've witnessed. Blake, a Packers fan, recalled Aaron Rodgers making three or four during his career, including one recently with the Jets. The Bears, favored in the polls and betting markets, had all the momentum. They were measuring the curtains, experiencing what felt like a Vibe shift toward inevitable victory.

Taking Eyes Off the Ball

Then came the catastrophic mistake. During the final play—the most critical moment of the game—Bears defensive back Stevenson had his back turned to the play, taunting the Washington crowd. The Bears defense rushed only three players, employing what Kirk calls a "stupid scheme" by coach Matt Eberflus. They failed to blitz, apparently unconcerned about Jaden Daniels running 58 yards for a touchdown on the game's final play.

Kirk sees this as a direct parallel to the current political moment: "It might feel very good that Trump is going to win. It might feel as if it is inevitable. Oh, the polls and the surge and Madison Square Garden and the betting markets and what could possibly happen? I'm going to tell you what could possibly happen—Hail Marys can work sometimes, especially if you take the play off."

The Hail Mary Connects

What happened next was devastating for Bears fans. Washington quarterback Jaden Daniels launched a Hail Mary pass from beyond the 30-yard line. The ball sailed through the air as defenders converged. In the chaotic scrum at the end zone, the ball was deflected—by none other than Stevenson, the defensive back who had been taunting the crowd. The deflection went directly into the hands of a Washington receiver for a miraculous touchdown. Washington won a game they had a 0.1% chance of winning.

Kirk emphasizes the lesson: "This right here should be a little bit of a lesson, a little bit of a pause. Again, it's football, it's not the civilization. But in eight days, it is the civilization."

The Democrats' Hail Mary Attempts

Kirk warns that the Kamala Harris campaign is already throwing their own Hail Mary passes in the final days before the election. He lists what he calls their desperate attempts:

  • The Hitler Hail Mary
  • The Madison Square Garden Hail Mary
  • The Nazi Hail Mary
  • The Fascism Hail Mary

According to Kirk, if Trump supporters become too cocky or "high on their own supply" like the Chicago Bears were, they could experience the same devastating loss. The warning is clear: maintain focus, stay aggressive, and don't celebrate until the game is truly over.

Blitzing to the Finish Line

Kirk outlines what the Bears should have done—and what Trump supporters must do now. The Bears should have rushed five defenders on the Hail Mary play, applying maximum pressure. The worst Washington could have done was throw a short pass, leaving seven defenders to make the tackle. There's little value in having extra defenders standing in the end zone where deflections can turn into completions.

"We have to stay aggressive," Kirk insists. "We have to go harder than we've ever gone the next eight days because they're going to try a Hail Mary. They're going to try something extraordinary."

He warns against taunting liberal friends or acting like victory is assured. The celebration can happen on November 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and for the next four years—but only if the work gets done first. The Bears thought they had it "signed, sealed, and delivered." They thought "the cake was baked." But there was one play left, and they took their eyes off the ball.

The Stakes Are Civilization

Kirk acknowledges there's an "aura of confidence that is bordering on Cockiness in Trump circles right now." While confidence is good, the answer is to "play to the last play and not celebrate—chase votes and chase ballots." The challenge is threading the needle between confidence and Cockiness while maintaining relentless focus.

"Could you imagine," Kirk asks, "if we spend this next week measuring the curtains while they're chasing ballots and we end up on the wrong side of history?"

The call to action is specific and urgent:

  • Find those extra five voters
  • Find those extra ten voters
  • Chase those extra fifty ballots
  • Keep your eyes on the ballots
  • Stay focused until it's truly over

Kirk's message is ultimately one of disciplined urgency. The momentum is real, the polls look favorable, the betting markets show strength, and the Madison Square Garden rally demonstrated massive enthusiasm. But none of that matters if supporters become complacent in the final days. Like the Chicago Bears defensive back who turned his back during the most important play of the game, taking your eye off the ball even for a moment can turn certain victory into devastating defeat.

The next eight days require maximum effort, maximum focus, and zero celebration. There will be plenty of time to celebrate later—but only if the work gets done now.
