Jesse Weber on Sidebar Breaks Down Every Charlie Kirk Conspiracy Theory After Tyler Robinson's Arrest

Jesse Weber, host of Sidebar on Law and Crime, delivers a thorough breakdown of the theories circulating online following Charlie Kirk's murder, against the backdrop of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson's arrest after a 30-hour manhunt. Robinson was taken into custody after a family member contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that he had confessed or implied involvement in the shooting. FBI Director Kash Patel said thousands of leads poured in after surveillance footage was released publicly. But even with someone in custody, the theories have not stopped. Weber walks through each one: the white hat signaling theory, the bulletproof vest theory, claims of foreign nation involvement, specifically Israel, a social media theory linking President Trump to the assassination as an Epstein distraction, and the flood of false identifications of innocent people online.

Tyler Robinson Arrested After a 30-Hour Manhunt

Authorities announced the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the man who allegedly shot and killed Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Robinson lived hours away from the campus. Investigators say he carried a bolt-action rifle to the top of a campus building and fired one shot, striking Kirk in the neck in front of thousands of people. Kirk, 31, a married father of two young children, was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead.

On the evening of September 11th, a family member of Robinson contacted a family friend who then reached out to the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that Robinson had confessed or implied involvement in the shooting. He was taken into custody around 10 p.m. and booked into jail. FBI Director Kash Patel said that after surveillance images and video of the suspect were released to the public, investigators received thousands of leads. Even with an arrest made, Weber notes that a significant portion of the public is likely to continue asking whether Robinson acted alone or was part of something larger.

The White Hat Signaling Theory

One of the most widely circulated theories online focused on a man in a white hat visible behind Charlie Kirk in footage of the event. The man appears to touch his hat and then his ear, followed immediately by a man next to him — believed to be a member of Kirk's security team — who extends his arm and makes a touching gesture. That sequence is immediately followed by the shot being fired.

The theory: were they signaling the shooter? Weber acknowledges the sequence is strange and notes additional eerie context — at the moment Kirk was shot, he was discussing gun violence and transgender shooters, and the last word he uttered before the bullet struck was "violence." However, Weber points to another camera angle showing both individuals appear visibly shocked when the shot is fired. They were also in the line of fire themselves, which cuts against the idea that they knew what was coming.

Was Charlie Kirk Wearing a Bulletproof Vest?

Some viewing certain camera angles believed the bullet may have first struck Kirk in the chest, ricocheted off a bulletproof vest, and then struck him in the neck. Neither the FBI nor Turning Point USA confirmed or denied whether Kirk was wearing a vest. The Daily Mail spoke with Chris Herszog, owner of the Bodyguard Group of Beverly Hills, who claims he warned Kirk at a California State University rally months earlier that he would be killed at one of his events without proper precautions. Herszog's colleague Mark Wilson told the Daily Mail they had specifically discussed the apparent absence of a bulletproof vest.

Based on the available reporting and analysis, the overwhelming conclusion is that Kirk was shot directly in the neck without a vest deflecting the round.

Was This a Trained Assassin? Tracy Walder Weighs In

Former CIA and FBI agent Tracy Walder addressed the question of the shooter's skill level before Robinson's arrest. At roughly 200 yards, she assessed the shot as within the range of someone moderately to highly familiar with weapons — not a trained assassin in any professional sense. She speculated that Robinson was likely aiming for the head and came in slightly low.

"I think we want to think that this is some kind of a trained assassin — we see that in movies," Walder said. "But the reality is a 200-yard shot... I think he was probably aiming for the head. Came in a little bit low." She added that someone with no prior weapons experience could not have made that shot, but that a scope and a few minutes of waiting on the target is within reach of a moderately experienced shooter, not a 600-yard sharpshooter.

The Rifle and Its Inscriptions

Authorities identified the weapon as a Mauser Model 98, .30-06 caliber bolt-action rifle with a mounted scope — found in a wooded area near the campus. The New York Times and Wall Street Journal had reported preliminary and unverified claims that the rifle carried engravings expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideologies. At a news conference, officials confirmed inscriptions were found, though on the bullet casings rather than the rifle itself.

The inscriptions on the casings included:

  • On a fired casing: a partially legible phrase with unclear transcription
  • On unfired casings: "Hey, fascist! Catch!" followed by arrow symbols
  • A second unfired casing engraved with "Bella Ciao" — the famous Italian anti-fascist partisan song widely associated with left-wing resistance movements
  • A third unfired casing reading "If you read this, you are gay. LMAO"

Officials also said Robinson had reportedly told a family member that Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate, that he did not like Kirk's viewpoints, and that he had said Kirk was coming to Utah Valley University.

The Israel Conspiracy Theory

Before and after Robinson's arrest, a theory circulated on X claiming Israel was responsible for Kirk's death. The theory drew on several data points: Sean Hannity said on Fox News that a source in the intelligence community told him there might be a foreign component to the assassination; investigative journalist John Solomon said there were groups of interest in the Salt Lake City area connected to certain recent overseas activity. A user on X claimed that President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu posted about Kirk's death at the exact same time — 3:02 p.m. — as alleged proof of coordination.

Additional clips circulated of Kirk appearing to question pro-Israel narratives. On Megyn Kelly's program, Kirk said he had less ability to criticize the Israeli government online than actual Israelis did. On Ben Shapiro's show, he raised questions about whether the media was presenting the full picture on Israel's war in Gaza. On Patrick Bet-David's podcast, Kirk questioned how the October 7th attack could have occurred given Israel's heavy military surveillance along the Gaza border and asked whether a stand-down order had been given.

Weber's assessment: the theory does not hold up. Kirk's public record showed consistent and well-documented support for Israel and the Jewish people. Fox News had aired full segments featuring clips of Kirk describing how Israel changed his life, calling it a place with a role in God's plan, and declaring a moral commitment to that land. During debates about Gaza, Kirk defended Israel's military response, placing full blame for the conflict on Hamas.

Netanyahu, asked about the theory directly on Newsmax, was blunt: "That's insane. That's insane. Israel also changes the orbit of the moon. Israel pushes the sun." He separately called Kirk "an extraordinary friend, a once-in-a-generation figure" and "a defender of our common Judeo-Christian civilization."

The Trump-Epstein Distraction Theory

A post by filmmaker Morgan J. Freeman — who has over 470,000 followers on X — suggested that President Trump had ordered Kirk's assassination as a distraction from the Epstein file controversy and to generate the civil unrest needed to declare martial law and delay the 2026 midterms. The post received more than 2.4 million views and 60,000 likes. The New Republic also reported on the theory. Weber presents it as an example of how rapidly unfounded claims travel when layered onto existing political tensions.

False Identifications and the Misinformation Flood

Before Robinson's arrest, a wave of false suspect identifications spread across social media. Reuters reported that at least one video falsely identified a man 700 miles away — using arrest footage from California recorded in June — as Kirk's shooter. Another video circulated claiming to show the shooter fleeing, but that footage was from a separate shooting in Reno, Nevada in July. The New York Times reported that some users attributed the killing to a transgender woman.

One case drew particular attention. Immediately after the shooting, police detained a man at the scene. Initial online reaction assumed this was the shooter because of reports he had claimed to have done it. He turned out to be 71-year-old George Zinn, who authorities took into custody on suspicion of obstruction of justice. He was released and ruled out as a suspect. Online users then began falsely identifying Zinn as 77-year-old Canadian man Michael Malinsson — who was in Toronto at the time of the shooting and bore a superficial resemblance. His old pro-Democratic social media posts began circulating under labels like "far-left extremist" and "pure evil." One post targeting him reached over 3 million views.

"I'm just shocked by it — how quickly it can happen, how one's name and photo can get spread around," Malinsson told the Times. The speculation reportedly originated through an account called Fox 11 Reno, which is not a real broadcast affiliate but a fictitious account on X.

Foreign Bots Amplifying the Chaos

Utah Governor Spencer Cox offered a broader warning about the information environment surrounding the case. His team and federal teams had identified foreign bot activity from China and Russia actively amplifying misinformation and trying to stoke further violence in the wake of Kirk's death.

"Our adversaries want violence," Cox said. "We have bots from Russia, China, all over the world that are trying to instill disinformation and encourage violence." President Trump separately stated that his administration would pursue not only Robinson but every person and organization that contributed to the political violence — including those who fund and support it.
