Intense Security Surrounds Provo Courthouse Hearing
Brian Entin, senior correspondent, reported live from outside the Provo courthouse where Tyler Robinson appeared for a hearing related to accusations of attempting to assassinate Charlie Kirk. The security presence was unlike anything Entin had witnessed at a courthouse. Roads surrounding the building were closed, and Robinson arrived in a convoy of police vehicles that included a Humvee. Inside the courtroom, a SWAT team in full military gear stood watch, with at least four or five members present alongside numerous sheriff's deputies and bomb dogs. Snipers were reportedly positioned in the area, and helicopters had been spotted overhead.
The courthouse itself was locked down with several doors zip-tied shut, allowing entry and exit through only one controlled route. Entin, who was number ten in line and among the first 75 people allowed inside, found himself seated directly behind Robinson's mother, father, and brother.
Courtroom Cleared for Sealed Transcript Discussion
The public portion of the hearing was extremely brief. Almost immediately after proceedings began, the judge ordered all members of the public and media to leave the courtroom. The reason given was to discuss whether to release secret transcripts from a previous hearing held on October 24th. Even Robinson's family members were required to leave, despite the defense attorney's request that his parents be allowed to stay. The judge denied this request, stating that they too were members of the public and everyone had to go.
Robinson's mother was visibly upset by this decision. She had been crying throughout the brief time they were in the courtroom and continued to tear up as she was escorted back into the hallway with the rest of the waiting crowd. Entin recognized the family members from body camera footage that had been released previously.
First In-Person Look at Tyler Robinson
This hearing marked the first time Tyler Robinson had been seen in person, as all previous hearings had been conducted virtually via Zoom. Entin described Robinson as a very small, very skinny man who appeared highly attentive to his lawyers. Before the judge cleared the courtroom, Robinson was observed talking with his legal team as the hearing was about to start.
Though Robinson was allowed to wear civilian clothes—a button-down shirt and tie—to avoid tainting the jury pool and preserve the presumption of innocence, he was clearly shackled. Restraints were visible around his waist and at his feet. The judge had made a ruling allowing the civilian clothing throughout pretrial hearings, though this could potentially change for the actual trial, where he might be required to wear jailhouse attire.
Media Access and Camera Coverage
The media camera allowed in the courtroom was positioned very close to Robinson, providing an unusually intimate view compared to the grainy Zoom footage from previous virtual hearings or his widely circulated mugshot. The courtroom itself was described as not particularly large, making the proximity even more striking. Those waiting outside hoped to be allowed back in once the closed session regarding the sealed transcripts concluded.
Video Transcript
[00:02] NOT LIVE VIDEO. THAT IS FROM
[00:04] MOMENTS AGO. LET'S BRING IN
[00:06] SENIOR CORRESPONDENT BRIAN
[00:07] ENTIN WHO IS LIVE OUTSIDE OF
[00:08] THE COURTHOUSE THERE IN PROVO.
[00:11] BRIAN, EVEN ROBINSON'S FAMILY
[00:12] MEMBERS HAD TO LEAVE THE
[00:13] COURTROOM. YEAH. THIS IS KIND
[00:17] OF A UNIQUE SITUATION TO CALL.
[00:18] I WAS JUST POPPED UP THERE. WE
[00:20] WAITED IN LINE. THEY LET THE
[00:21] FIRST 75 PEOPLE. AND I WAS
[00:23] NUMBER TENDS. I WAS ABLE TO
[00:24] GET IN. I WAS ACTUALLY SITTING
[00:24] RIGHT BEHIND TYLER ROBINSON'S
[00:27] MOM.
[00:28] >> HIS DAD AND HIS BROTHER.
[00:29] HIS MOM WAS CRYING THROUGHOUT
[00:31] THIS AND WE GOT IN. WE SAT
[00:32] DOWN WAS QUITE A PROCESS,
[00:35] GETTING IN AND THEN THEY
[00:37] STARTED THE HEARING AND THE
[00:37] JUDGE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY SAID,
[00:39] OK, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO ASK
[00:40] ALL MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AND
[00:41] THE MEDIA TO NOW GO BACK OUT
[00:42] INTO THE HALLWAY WHILE WE
[00:44] DISCUSS WHETHER OR NOT TO
[00:47] RELEASE A SECRET TRANSCRIPT
[00:49] FROM BACK ON OCTOBER 24TH. SO
[00:51] WE SAW TYLER ROBINSON TO BE
[00:53] SACKED DOWN. IT'S THE FIRST
[00:55] TIME WE'VE EVER SEEN HIM IN
[00:56] PERSON. BY THE WAY, THE CALL
[00:57] OF THE OTHER HEARINGS HAVE
[00:58] BEEN VIRTUAL SO REALLY
[00:59] STRIKING TO SEE HIM IN PERSON
[01:01] ANY WHAT I NOTICED WAS HE'S A
[01:03] VERY, VERY SKINNY SMALL GUY.
[01:04] HE WAS VERY, VERY ATTENTIVE
[01:06] HISTORY LAWYERS. HE WAS
[01:07] TALKING WITH THEM AS THE
[01:08] HEARING WAS ABOUT START. BUT
[01:09] AS SOON AS WE GOT IN SAT DOWN.
[01:11] BASICALLY THE JUDGE SAID WE
[01:11] ALL HAD TO LEAVE AGAIN. THE
[01:14] DEFENSE ASKED OF TYLER
[01:16] ROBINSON'S PARENTS CAN STAY IN
[01:17] THE COURTROOM AND THE JUDGE
[01:17] SAID NO TO THE MOM WAS CRYING.
[01:18] SHE CAME BACK OUT INTO THE
[01:19] HALLWAY WITH US. I NOW WE'RE
[01:22] WAITING TO FIND OUT WHEN WILL
[01:23] BE LET BACK INTO THE
[01:25] COURTROOM. SECURITY IS SO
[01:26] INTENSE. THE COLD. I DON'T
[01:27] THINK I'VE EVER SEEN A POLICE
[01:30] SITUATION LIKE THIS AT A
[01:32] COURTHOUSE. THEY'VE GOT ALL
[01:32] THE ROADS RIGHT NOW CLOSED
[01:33] AROUND THE COURTHOUSE. THEY
[01:36] BROUGHT TYLER ROBINSON IN IN
[01:37] THIS CONVOY OF POLICE VEHICLES
[01:40] WITH A HUMVEE IN A CONVOY. AND
[01:43] THEN WHEN YOU'RE IN THE
[01:44] COURTROOM, THEY ACTUALLY HAD
[01:46] THE SWAT TEAM IN THE COURTROOM
[01:49] ENFORCE THAT HE'S IN FULL
[01:50] MILITARY GEAR. THERE WERE AT
[01:52] LEAST 4 OR 5 OF THEM. PLUS ALL
[01:53] OF THE SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES.
[01:56] PLUS BOMB DOGS UPSTAIRS PLUS
[02:00] THE EVE. I EVEN NOTICED A ZIP
[02:00] TIED SEVERAL OF THE DOORS
[02:01] LEADING OUT OF THE COURTHOUSE
[02:04] SO YOU CAN ONLY GO IN 1 WAY
[02:05] AND GO OUT ONE WAY. SO THERE
[02:06] THERE'S APPARENTLY SNIPERS IN
[02:07] THE AREA. I'VE BEEN TOLD
[02:09] THERE'S BEEN HELICOPTERS SO
[02:09] THEY ARE NOT TAKING ANY
[02:11] CHANCES ON OBVIOUSLY WITH. HOW
[02:13] ABOUT HOW THIS WHOLE SITUATION
[02:15] IS WITH HIM BEING ACCUSED
[02:16] ASSASSINATING CHARLIE KIRK.
[02:17] BUT WE'LL SEE. WHEN WE GET TO
[02:18] GO BACK UP. THIS WAS SORT OF
[02:20] UNEXPECTED THAT EVERYONE IS
[02:21] ASKED TO LEAVE THE COURTROOM.
[02:22] BRADY, JUST WANT ZOOM IN ON
[02:24] SOMETHING THAT WILL BE
[02:24] DISCUSSED TODAY BECAUSE AS WE
[02:25] TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO.
[02:28] >> WHAT WE SAW MOMENTS AGO
[02:30] BEFORE EVERYONE WAS KICKED OUT
[02:31] OF THE COURTROOM THERE. TYLER
[02:33] ROBINSON IS ALLOWED TO BE IN
[02:36] CIVILIAN CLOTHES DURING ALL OF
[02:40] HIS PRETRIAL HEARINGS. BUT
[02:40] THAT COULD POTENTIALLY CHANGE
[02:43] FOR THE TRIAL. IT IS POSSIBLE
[02:45] WE WOULD SEE HIM IN THOSE
[02:47] JAILHOUSE THAT JOE HAS FROM
[02:48] THE TRADITIONAL RED OR
[02:49] WHATEVER IT HAPPENS TO BE.
[02:50] THERE IN EXCUSE ME, ORANGE ARE
[02:52] WHATEVER HAPPENS TO BE THERE
[02:53] IN UTAH, CORRECT.
[02:57] >> YES, TODAY MADE A RULING
[02:58] THAT HE'LL GET TO WHERE THE
[02:59] CIVILIAN CLOTHES OFF, THREW
[03:01] OUT THAT THEY DON'T TAINT THE
[03:02] JURY POOL INNOCENT UNTIL
[03:04] PROVEN GUILTY. BUT I NOTICED,
[03:05] U KNOW, HE CAME IN. HE'S IN.
[03:07] HE'S GOT TO DOWN SHIRT. YOU
[03:09] SEE HIM IN THE TIE THERE. BUT
[03:10] IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, HE IS
[03:10] SHACKLED AROUND THE WAIST AND
[03:14] HE'S ALSO SHACKLED DOWN AT HIS
[03:15] FEET. SO WE HAD SHACKLES ON.
[03:18] BUT YEAH, I ME, THE CAMERA,
[03:19] THE CAMERA THAT WERE ALLOWED
[03:21] TO FEED INTO THE MEDIA CAMERA.
[03:22] IT'S SO CLOSE TO HIM AND I GET
[03:25] IT. YOU SORT OF THE ERIE
[03:26] SEEING HIM IN PERSON BECAUSE
[03:29] WE'VE ONLY SEEN THE MUG SHOT.
[03:30] WE'VE SEEN THAT SORT OF GRAINY
[03:32] ZOOM VIDEO FROM WHEN HE
[03:32] ATTENDED THE HEARING FROM
[03:34] JAIL, BUT IT'S NOT A BIG
[03:36] COURTROOM WERE. ALL RIGHT
[03:36] THERE. HE'S RIGHT THERE. THE
[03:37] CAMERAS RIGHT UP ON HIM AND
[03:40] HOPEFULLY WE'LL BE ABLE TO GET
[03:41] BACK INSIDE JUST WHAT HAS YOUR
[03:43] WHAT HE DID. HIS FAMILY. I
[03:44] KNOW YOU MENTIONED HIS MOTHER
[03:45] CRYING. DID THE FAMILY SEEMED
[03:46] TO BE UPSET. THE MOM DID. I
[03:51] MEAN, THE MOM WAS WAS CRYING.
[03:53] AND I, YOU KNOW, JUST TEARS
[03:54] COMING DOWN THROUGHOUT. SHE
[03:56] WAS SITTING THERE. HER HUSBAND
[03:56] WAS SITTING NEXT TO HER AND
[04:00] THEN HER SAID HER SON, TYLER
[04:01] ROBINSON'S BROTHER WAS SITTING
[04:02] THERE. AND AT FIRST I
[04:04] RECOGNIZE ARE BECAUSE YOU ARE
[04:05] IS BODY CAMERA VIDEO THAT CAME
[04:06] OUT FROM A WHILE AGO WHEN
[04:07] GOTTEN THIS WRECKING HIS MOM
[04:08] SHOWED UP. SO I RECOGNIZE ARE
[04:10] PRETTY IMMEDIATELY FROM THE
[04:11] BODY CAMERA VIDEO AND THEY
[04:13] DIDN'T SEEM PLEASED THAT THEY
[04:14] ALSO HAD TO LEAVE THE
[04:15] COURTROOM. BUT THE JUDGE SAID,
[04:16] LOOK, THERE ARE ALSO MEMBERS
[04:16] OF THE PUBLIC.
[04:19] >> EVERYBODY'S GOT TO GO SO.
[04:22] >> THEY'RE THEY'RE BASICALLY A
[04:24] CLOSED HEARING FROM OCTOBER
[04:26] 24TH AND WHETHER OR NOT TO
[04:27] RELEASE THOSE SECRET
[04:29] TRANSCRIPTS. THAT'S THE REASON
[04:31] THAT THEY'VE TAKEN THE PUBLIC
[04:32] OUT. SO WHEN THEY FINISH THAT
[04:33] DISCUSSION, APPARENTLY WE'RE
[04:33] GOING TO ALLOWED BACK IN.
[04:36] >> ALL RIGHT. BRIAN ENTIN
[04:37] BREAKING EVERYTHING DOWN FOR
[04:38] US THERE AS
