Candace Owens Defends Conservative Values and Black Community Empowerment Before Congressional Committee Hearing
Candace Owens testified before a congressional committee, responding to accusations of associating with hate groups and defending her conservative principles. The Turning Point USA Director of Communications addressed questions about her political views, her support for President Trump, and her message to the Black community. Owens challenged Democratic narratives, discussed the impact of conservative policies on Black unemployment and poverty, and confronted attempts to silence conservative voices on college campuses.
Candace Owens, Director of Communications at Turning Point USA, faced pointed questions during a congressional committee hearing where she was singled out in a Democratic memo as a "conservative commentator and political activist known for her criticism of Black Lives Matter and the Democrat Party." The memo, prepared by the majority Democrats, notably labeled only Owens with political descriptors while other witnesses remained unlabeled.
During her testimony, Owens confirmed her identity as a conservative and outlined her positions on key issues. She stated she is pro-life, a Christian, and proud of her family. When asked directly about hatred toward different groups, Owens categorically denied harboring animosity toward Americans of any race, Hispanics, Asians, or members of the LGBTQ community.
Challenging Democratic Leadership
Owens explained her support for President Trump by highlighting what she views as his accomplishments for the Black community. She pointed to the historically low Black unemployment rate and the reduction of 3.5 million people from food stamps as evidence of policies that empower rather than create dependency.
"He's lowered the black unemployment rate, it's the lowest it's ever been in the history," Owens testified. "He's getting us off of our feet." She criticized the Congressional Black Caucus and Democrats for not applauding these achievements, arguing "they want a system where blacks are dependent on the government."
Owens identified father absence as the biggest problem facing the Black community and blamed Democratic policies for breaking down the Black family structure. She praised the president for addressing real issues rather than pandering, referencing what she described as patronizing behavior by some Democratic politicians.
Free Speech and Campus Violence
When questioned about college campus climate, Owens advocated for open discussions on various issues. She revealed that she conducts campus tours regularly and faces significant opposition from leftist groups. On the night of her testimony, she was scheduled to speak at the University of Connecticut, where three Antifa chapters were planning to disrupt the event.
"We are being met with aggressive leftist groups," Owens stated. "They're gonna try to shut it down and we face this violence every day on the left and nobody ever wants to talk about it."
Owens confirmed she has been disinvited from speech opportunities at college campuses because of her conservative views. She highlighted an incident where a student's dorm was set on fire for being a member of a Turning Point chapter, emphasizing the political hatred directed at conservative activists.
Message to the Black Community
Owens described her core message as advocating for free markets and capitalism as means to lift people out of poverty. Her main thesis centers on the belief that Black people are not obligated to support the Democratic Party.
"My main thesis is that black people do not have to be Democrats, we are not owned by the left," Owens declared. "I actually love Americans with black skin color so much that I'm willing to fall on a sword a thousand times for them to wake up and realize that we are being lied to, abused and used by the Democrat Party."
Addressing Accusations of Hate
Responding to the committee chairman's opening statement that she "openly associates with purveyors of hate," Owens pushed back forcefully. She argued that by the chairman's definition, anyone who supports the president qualifies as a purveyor of hate.
"I absolutely do not," Owens responded when asked if she associates with hate groups. "I have no tolerance for hate whatsoever."
She acknowledged the existence of white supremacists and Nazis across the political spectrum that should be condemned, but defended her experience with conservatives. Speaking in front of conservative audiences approximately three times per week, Owens described receiving support when sharing pro-Black messages.
"All they want is for black Americans to realize that they are Americans first and foremost," Owens concluded. "Conservatives are Patriots, the president is a patriot and I'm a patriot and there is no skin color in patriotism."
