Charlie Kirk is the Founder and President of Turning Point USA, the largest and fastest growing conservative youth activist organization in the country with over 250,000 student members, over 150 full-time staff, and a presence on over 2,000 high school and college campuses nationwide. Charlie is also the Chairman of Students for Trump, which aims to activate one million new college voters on campuses in battleground states in the lead up to the 2020 presidential election. His social media reaches over 100 million people per month and according to Axios, he is one of the "top 10 most engaged" Twitter handles in the world. He is also the host of “The Charlie Kirk Show,” which regularly ranks among the top news shows on Apple podcast charts.
Charlie Kirk Confronts Student on Border Crisis: Why America Must Put Citizens First Over Illegal Immigration
Charlie Kirk engages in a heated debate with a college student defending the Biden-Harris administration's border policies. When the student argues that immigration built America and cites economic aid to Central America, Kirk counters with hard data: 10 million people entering the country, communities like Springfield, Ohio overwhelmed with students who don't speak English, Venezuelan gangs taking over Aurora, Colorado apartment complexes, and American citizens like Laken Riley murdered. Kirk argues that when a government prioritizes foreigners over its own people, providing free phones, flights, hotel rooms, and healthcare to illegal immigrants while veterans sleep on the streets, it breaks the fundamental social contract and ceases to be legitimate.
Charlie Kirk found himself in a pointed exchange with a college student who defended Vice President Kamala Harris's handling of the border crisis. The student argued that the Central America Forward program contributed to $5 billion in economic growth in South Central America and was productive in slowing migrant movement to the U.S. Kirk immediately challenged this premise with a stark reality check: America is experiencing the most open border in its history, with 10 million people having entered the interior of the country.
When the student attempted to deflect by citing deportation numbers, Kirk cut through the spin. While there may have been deportations, there has been a net growth in the illegal population. Every country in the OECD has seen increases from Central America, but the U.S. has brought in 5% of Haiti's entire population. The student remarkably stated he didn't see an issue with allowing immigrants into the country, framing it as refugees seeking the best country in the world—the very foundation of America.
America First Means Citizens First
Kirk seized on this fundamental misunderstanding of immigration policy and national sovereignty. He agreed that America is the best country in the world, but argued that means its citizens should come first, not foreigners. The government has an obligation to its own people. When the student suggested the pathway to citizenship should become easier, Kirk delivered an unambiguous response: all illegal foreigners should be deported back to their home countries.
The student claimed this was already happening under Biden, but Kirk demolished this claim with concrete examples. In Springfield, Ohio, English as a second language speakers in one high school went from 250 to 1,500 kids in just two years. These communities are being overrun. In Aurora, Colorado—right down the street from where they were speaking—entire apartment complexes are now being run by Venezuelan gangs.
The Human Cost of Open Borders
Kirk emphasized the daily toll of this crisis on American citizens. Americans are being killed—from Laken Riley to Rachel Morin to 11-year-olds killed in DUI accidents. This is 100% on the Harris-Biden regime because they share a perspective similar to the student: they think America is open season for the rest of the world to come in.
Kirk articulated a different belief, one rooted in the founding principles of the nation. The founding fathers understood that if a government does not fulfill its obligation to its own people first, that government is not legitimate. This is exactly what's happening now. The government is providing taxpayer-funded cell phones, hotel rooms, benefits, airplane rides, and cash for foreigners but not for Americans.
If you're an American citizen wanting a free cell phone, they'll laugh at you. But as a foreigner, as a Venezuelan, you get one on the southern border. You get a flight to any city you want. You get a luxury hotel in New York City. You get taxpayer-funded healthcare. This is an inversion—elevating somebody from a distant land over our own people when our own kids can't afford homes, when our own people are seeing increases in crime and homelessness, and when we have over 50,000 homeless veterans in this country. It's a breakdown of the social contract.
The Student's Unexpected Admission
The student then asked if the government should support veterans and citizens more, inadvertently making Kirk's point. Kirk confirmed: we should spend it on veterans and not on foreigners. The student pressed further, asking if that meant better healthcare and better social programs—cheaper healthcare for Americans. Kirk clarified that the government shouldn't be giving free phones to anybody, but yes, citizens should come first.
Kirk explained how citizens should come first: by not having to compete against a foreigner for their job. The student didn't think that was the case, citing that most jobs aren't affected. Kirk then issued a direct challenge: if the student's perspective was correct, would he feel comfortable going to Aurora, Colorado right now and visiting those three apartment complexes? The student claimed that according to the Aurora Police, he probably would, saying they claim the complexes aren't overrun.
Kirk told him to get in a car and go, to knock on the door. He warned that they'll extort you for cash because the country is open for looting right now for the entire world. Over 118 countries have entered the southern border that we know of. At least 99 people on the terrorist watch list have come across this open border. People from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Pakistan are coming here and mean harm to the interior of the United States.
What It Means to Be a Citizen
Beyond the security threat, Kirk argued, the open border is breaking down what it means to be a citizen. A citizen should be put first above anybody else. If a government does not do that, then the government is not fulfilling its basic obligation. The number one obligation is to make sure that its people can have a pathway to a better life—not a variety of free stuff, but not having to compete with somebody from Brazil for a home.
The student suggested using resources to improve the third world so people wouldn't come here. Kirk rejected this premise entirely. The American government should not be concerned about Central American politics when our own people are suffering. When pressed on whether he cared about those being sex trafficked, Kirk clarified that of course he cares, but spending money there doesn't solve the problem.
The U.S. has spent trillions, hundreds of billions of dollars, and it doesn't do any good. It is not the role of the American government to solve the problems of Panama, El Salvador, and Honduras when our own citizens are suffering and crying out for help. The student claimed the billions spent on Central American aid over the last four years has been effective at slowing sex trafficking, but Kirk flatly stated it hasn't slowed anything.
The Reality of Foreign Aid
What the student was describing, Kirk explained, is bribing governments where they then go give it to cartel leaders and say, "This month send 20,000 people instead of 40,000." The student insisted the money goes to NGOs and bottom-up stabilization, but Kirk wasn't buying it. More people are crossing the Darién Gap than ever before. People are coming across on the CBP One app into the interior of the United States, spreading to every single state.
This is why voters are ranking immigration near the top of all their concerns. Outside the propaganda, they're walking the streets like in Springfield, Ohio, and they see Haitians taking ducks and eating cats. You cannot continue to have a country if you import an unfamiliar third world this quickly into America.
A Complete Immigration Moratorium
The student asked if there should be a path to immigration. Kirk's answer was stunning: we should have no immigrants in this country right now. He called for a total, complete shutdown of immigration until every single Gen Z person can afford a home and can get their act together and be able to afford the American dream.
When asked what his path to Gen Z getting homes was, the student framed it as "kicking all brown people out." Kirk rejected the racial framing entirely. It's not about brown people—it's about illegal immigrants. Anyone here illegally should be deported back to their country of homeland. By the way, he added, it's a moral position.
The student brought up H-1B visas that generate and stimulate the economy. Kirk didn't back down. Anyone in computer science or computer engineering shouldn't have to compete against a foreigner for a job. That's wrong. The student suggested the issue was the free market, but Kirk stated clearly: he cares about the country more than the free market.
Education, Jobs, and National Priority
When the student suggested colleges should better prepare students and utilize government resources, Kirk called college a scam. For computer science specifically, students don't need to go to college. They could do a coding class in a couple of months. Companies like Alphabet and Google are hiring coders after a 60-day coding class without requiring a degree from CU Boulder where students learn about "North African lesbian poetry" or whatever else they teach.
To answer the fundamental question, Kirk stated, a country that ceases to secure its own sovereignty and does not prioritize its own people over foreigners ceases to be a country. You become a colony, something else. Americans are seeing their generosity be taken advantage of. He's all for American charities going down to Panama and helping out, all for people giving to charity. But when the government gives preference and priority to people who aren't even taxpayers, that's why you get the rise of Trump.
The Solution: Border Security First
The student suggested reallocating U.S. spending toward things that are effective for people in and outside borders so people don't have to come here. Kirk rejected this entirely. The way to prevent people from coming is to close the border and turn them away at the border, telling them to go back to Nicaragua. The student insisted that spending in Central America means they don't have to come to the U.S. and then we have a better U.S.
Kirk explained that trying to solve the problems of the third world would cost trillions of dollars, all of which would be laundered and wouldn't even work. Again, it's not the position of the American government to throw money around in the Northern Triangle. Instead, the country is closed. America is not open for looting anymore. People should go make Nicaragua great again or do what El Salvador has done.
The El Salvador Model
Kirk pointed to El Salvador as now a safe and stable country with GDP going up, and it's not because of U.S. aid. The student claimed the U.S. put $4 billion into South Central America and that's why it's safe. Kirk corrected him: Nayib Bukele barely took the money. El Salvador is safe because Bukele locked up all the criminals—40,000 of them—and put them in prisons. El Salvador was the murder capital of the world and is now safer than America, much safer than America.
Kirk then posed a devastating series of questions. Would any of the students walk the streets of Denver at night? They wouldn't. Would they walk the streets of LA at night? No. San Francisco? No. Americans can't walk their own greatest cities at night, and yet the government wants to bring in more people from the third world. Kirk's answer: hell no.
This is a breakdown of the fundamental role of government. When citizens cannot safely walk the streets of their own cities, when they're competing with foreigners for jobs and housing, when their tax dollars go to provide services for illegal immigrants while veterans are homeless—the social contract is broken, and the government has failed in its most basic duty.
