The Pod Save America Confession
The popular podcast Pod Save America, hosted by former Obama administration staffers Dan Pfeiffer, Tommy Vietor, Jon Favreau, and Jon Lovett, recently aired a clip that Charlie Kirk describes as "a perfect picture into what's wrong with the Democrat Party." In the extended segment, these Obama insiders openly lament watching the Trump administration accomplish reforms they claim they wanted to implement but never could.
Kirk notes the irony: these are the voices that once shaped Democratic policy, yet they now find themselves sidelined, unable to get hired at the top of a Democrat administration. Their podcast remains popular, but their political influence has waned. What makes this clip particularly revealing, according to Kirk, is their reaction to DOGE—the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk.
Admitting Trump's Impressive Start
In the clip, the Pod Save America hosts acknowledge that despite wanting to criticize Trump's campaign promises—like lower egg prices and ending the Ukraine war—they recognize that "most voters get that it was a shtick and they're going to give him some time to actually get things done." One host admits: "Trump is moving so fast, they are doing a lot. It doesn't, it's not just the perception of it, they hit the ground running in a serious way. It's genuinely impressive, impressive in a dark and sinister way, but it's nonetheless impressive."
They continue by noting that compared to how people felt about Joe Biden "being basically absent," the energy and action coming from the Trump administration is "a welcome change" for many Americans. The hosts struggle with their messaging challenge: "You don't want to seem like you're opposed to government efficiency, but obviously now they're just rampaging through the government."
The Gen Z Factor and DOGE Appeal
What clearly frustrates the Pod Save America team is data showing that young people, particularly Gen Z, like what Elon Musk is doing with DOGE. As one host explains: "The young people, Gen Z, they like DOGE and what Elon's doing because they see government as sclerotic and inefficient and they like the 'move fast and break things' ethos and they want to get stuff done and they like the results."
The host continues with visible frustration: "It's like yeah, we, yes, of course we all want that. We all know that government is slow, we all know that government can be inefficient, we all know that the bureaucracy can be bloated. We all worked in the White House, we tried to reorganize the government, we tried to find efficiency. It's hard to do."
Then comes the admission that Kirk highlights as most damning: "Honestly, some of this is pretty annoying because it's some of the stuff we should have done. You could do some of this."
Kirk's Diagnosis: Missing Masculine Energy
Charlie Kirk seizes on this moment as emblematic of a deeper problem within the Democratic Party. "You see, you got Jon Favreau saying 'well we wanted to do this but we couldn't and it's really frustrating and I don't know why we couldn't do it,'" Kirk observes. "These are mid-level managers that have graduated to podcasting and they found themselves on the losing end of every single issue."
Kirk contrasts their approach with what he calls "masculine, determinative, go forth and conquer, Go West Young Man energy that is now in the White House." He argues this isn't about the "little mid-level management ethos" or what he mockingly calls "a bunch of fem boys" who operate by committee and worry about offending people.
"You wanted to do it but you couldn't do it," Kirk states. "You don't have what it takes. You don't have the intestinal fortitude, you don't have the grit, you don't have the spine. It's not just about ideas and policies, it's about do you have the DNA and the fiber, and the Democrat Party doesn't."
The Obama Legacy Problem
Kirk traces this weakness back to Barack Obama himself, describing him as "just there as a mid-level manager, community organizer type." The Pod Save America hosts, having served as senior aides to Obama, inherited this same mentality according to Kirk's analysis. Now they find themselves "on the losing end" and "lamenting their position."
The contrast Kirk draws is stark: while the current administration executes with speed and decisiveness, the Democratic establishment offers endless analysis and excuses but no results. Their admission that "we tried to reorganize the government, we tried to find efficiency, it's hard to do" serves as proof, in Kirk's view, that they simply lack the capability to deliver.
Why DOGE Resonates
Kirk emphasizes that DOGE's popularity isn't limited to one demographic—"it's popular with young people, it's popular with people of all ages"—but Gen Z's embrace of it is particularly significant. He agrees with the sentiment that "yes, we should break government. It doesn't work for you. We're borrowing trillions of dollars that we don't have."
The appeal of the "move fast and break things" approach represents a rejection of the cautious, committee-driven governance style that the Obama alumni represent. Kirk argues this generational shift explains why the Pod Save America hosts are struggling: their brand of politics no longer resonates even with younger voters who might otherwise lean Democratic.
"The Pod Save America fem boys, they should be lamenting their position," Kirk concludes. "It doesn't look too good for them." In his view, this clip captures the Democratic Party at a crossroads—still dominated by voices who can diagnose problems and wish for solutions but fundamentally unable to execute with the decisiveness that voters increasingly demand.

[00:00] okay there is a very successful podcast
[00:02] called pod save America and it is hosted
[00:05] by the Obama Bros Dan feifer Tommy vider
[00:10] John favro and John levit and here they
[00:14] are on this clip and we're going to keep
[00:16] it's a longer clip but I want to go
[00:17] through it with you lamenting but oh we
[00:20] should have done this when we were in
[00:23] office and this is a perfect picture of
[00:27] kind of the Democrat mind now
[00:28] hilariously
[00:31] uh this is the type of person that can't
[00:32] get hired at the top of a Democrat
[00:34] Administration anymore but you can kind
[00:36] of see that they're kind of in charge of
[00:38] the limp wristed Mafia over there it's
[00:40] not a lot of spe not a lot of Spun
[00:42] because you could see that as they're
[00:44] lamenting over Doge it's the perfect
[00:47] picture into what's wrong with the
[00:48] Democrat
[00:49] Party oh we should have we could have
[00:52] why didn't we it's because they're
[00:54] missing that kind of masculine energy to
[00:56] go forth and to change
[01:00] watch this clip very carefully these
[01:01] were all of kind of senior aids to
[01:03] Barack Obama again their podcast is very
[01:05] popular and I respect that but they were
[01:08] going through talking about
[01:11] how what Elon Musk is doing is working
[01:15] that they wanted to do some of the stuff
[01:17] and they couldn't and that Jen Z likes
[01:20] it very telling clip here play Cut 182
[01:24] keep my mic on um and also as much as I
[01:27] want to throw all of Trump's campaign
[01:29] prom prises in his face like the price
[01:31] of eggs is not down youve not ended the
[01:33] war in Ukraine etc etc you said he' do
[01:35] it in 24 hours I think most voters get
[01:38] that it was a shtick and they're going
[01:39] to give him some time to actually get
[01:41] things done Trump is like I he is moving
[01:46] so fast they are doing a lot it doesn't
[01:48] it not just the perception of it they
[01:50] hit the ground running in a in a serious
[01:53] way it's like genuinely impressive
[01:55] impressive in a dark and Sinister way
[01:57] but it's nonetheless impressive and if
[01:59] you're turning on the news every day and
[02:00] hearing about all these different things
[02:01] Trump is doing and all the different
[02:02] criticisms coming out of it you may not
[02:04] like all of it but like in comparison
[02:05] how to how people felt about Joe Biden
[02:07] uh being basically absent uh I imagine
[02:10] for a lot of people it's a welcome
[02:11] change the energy and he's assigning
[02:13] things and he's effect all that I think
[02:14] that is playing extraordinarily well you
[02:17] don't want to seem like you're opposed
[02:18] to government efficiency but obviously
[02:20] now they're just rampaging through like
[02:22] the government venmo and and shutting
[02:25] right I'm not saying they're wrong I'm
[02:26] just lamenting our situation me too no I
[02:28] I love I felt the same way cuz I've seen
[02:30] the messaging memos and it's like you
[02:32] know the young young people gen Z they
[02:34] like Doge and what elon's doing because
[02:36] you know they don't see they see
[02:37] government is sclerotic and inefficient
[02:39] and they like to move fast and break
[02:41] things ethos and they want to get stuff
[02:43] done and they like the results it's like
[02:45] yeah we yes of course we all want that
[02:48] we all know that government is slow we
[02:49] all know that government can be
[02:50] inefficient we all know that the
[02:51] bureaucracy can be bloated we all worked
[02:53] in the white house we tried to
[02:55] reorganize the government we tried to
[02:56] find efficiency it's hard to do honestly
[02:58] some of this is pretty annoying because
[03:00] it's some of the stuff we should have
[03:01] done you could do some of this you just
[03:03] got to talk Jen Z to you're like I could
[03:05] dig these DOA cats oh my God that was
[03:08] horrible no you see you got John farro
[03:13] well we wanted to do this but we
[03:14] couldn't and it's really frustrating and
[03:16] I don't know why we couldn't do
[03:19] it then you got that other guy I don't
[03:21] even know his name this is really
[03:23] frustrating I know it's very important
[03:24] because these are mid-level managers
[03:27] that have graduated to podcasting
[03:31] and they found themselves on the losing
[03:32] end of every single 7030 issue but
[03:34] understand you got masculine
[03:37] determinative go forth and Conquer Go
[03:40] West Young Man energy that is now in the
[03:42] white house that's not this little
[03:43] mid-level man midlevel
[03:47] management ethos I mean you got a bunch
[03:50] of f booys over there that's what the
[03:51] Democrat Party is well maybe we have to
[03:54] have a little bit of a council and a
[03:56] committee and we can't offend other
[03:58] people we wanted to do it but you
[03:59] couldn't do it you don't have what it
[04:00] takes you don't have the the intestinal
[04:03] fortitude you have the grip you don't
[04:04] have the spine it's not just about ideas
[04:06] and policies it's about do you have the
[04:08] DNA and the fiber and the Democrat Party
[04:10] doesn't that's the best that they have
[04:11] to offer but of course they took after
[04:14] their boss Obama Obama was just there as
[04:17] a mid-level manager Community organizer
[04:19] type and now they're realizing they're
[04:21] losing oh yes they are doge is
[04:24] incredibly popular it's popular with
[04:26] young people it's popular with people of
[04:27] all ages but especially gen Z cuz
[04:29] because yes we should break government
[04:31] it doesn't work for you we're borrowing
[04:32] trillions of dollars that we don't have
[04:35] and the Pod save America fem booys they
[04:38] should be lamenting their
[04:39] position it doesn't look too good for
[04:41] them
