Charlie Kirk’s Murder: A Rallying Point for Political Extremism

September 12, 2025

Seth Andrews examines the political and cultural fallout following the murder of Charlie Kirk. It highlights how the event has been used to fuel extremist rhetoric, explores the divisive political responses, and warns against the normalization of political violence and calls for civil war in the United States.

Political Extremism and the Culture of Violence

Charlie Kirk’s murder has become a rallying point for a faction of Americans seemingly eager for a second civil war. While calls to violence exist across the political spectrum, the right has framed the shooting as a symptom of a “liberal disease,” blaming “woke lefties” for dehumanizing rhetoric that supposedly led to the killing.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller tweeted about institutions being “infected with wicked ideology threatening our children, society, civilization,” language that echoes holy crusade messaging designed to prime the country for a right-wing cultural takeover. Anyone not aligned with the “righteous right” is cast as an enemy of religion, freedom, and America itself.

The War Rhetoric and Immediate Aftermath

The assassination of Charlie Kirk must be condemned unequivocally. An arrest was made on the morning following the shooting, and the suspect is in custody to face prosecution. However, Kirk’s murder does not make him a martyr or hero.

Moments after he was fatally shot on September 10th at Utah Valley University, his name was immediately deified and used as a symbol for the “righteous right” to declare war on perceived enemies. Politicians like South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace and Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna used the event to push their own agendas, blaming opponents of fascism and warning of threats to women’s safety.

Donald Trump’s Response and Political Double Standards

President Donald Trump quickly blamed the “radical left” for the shooting before any suspect was named. He has a history of selective sympathy, having ordered flags at half-mast for Kirk’s death—a gesture not extended to murdered Democrats like Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband.

Trump dismissed outreach to grieving Democrats as a “waste of time” but pardoned January 6th insurrectionists, whom he called “special” and “worthy of his love.” His rhetoric increasingly militarizes political discourse, framing opponents as enemies to be punished.

Far-Right Extremism and Calls for Violence

Social media is rife with militant imagery and language, including AI-generated depictions of an angry Trump and references to “American Gestapo” tactics. Far-right commentators liken the situation to historical fascist events, such as the Reichstag fire, and call for purges of political opponents.

Elon Musk echoed these sentiments, calling the left the “party of murder” before his own AI refuted the claim, showing no partisan monopoly on political assassinations. The Anti-Defamation League reports that 75% of political murders in the last decade were committed by extremist right-wing actors.

Historical Context of Right-Wing Violence

Examples of right-wing violence include the plot to kidnap and execute Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the assault on Nancy Pelosi’s husband by a far-right QAnon supporter. Charlie Kirk himself supported the release of that attacker.

While left-wing extremism exists, it is important to recognize the disproportionate role of the far right in political violence.

Charlie Kirk’s Controversial Legacy

Kirk’s murder should be condemned, but it does not erase his history of hateful rhetoric. He invoked Old Testament calls to stone gay people, dismissed Black Lives Matter as “race hysteria,” and disparaged Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He opposed diversity initiatives, called vaccine mandates “medical apartheid,” and promoted white supremacist conspiracy theories like the “great replacement.”

He made misogynistic statements, including telling Taylor Swift to submit to her husband, and declared he would force a raped 10-year-old to carry the pregnancy to term. He advocated for Nuremberg-style trials for gender-affirming doctors and opposed church-state separation.

Warning Against Normalizing Political Assassinations

The article warns against normalizing political assassinations and extremism. It rejects the idea of a “ministry of truth” enforcing ideological purity and cautions against the dangerous rhetoric that could lead to civil war. Alarmingly, many appear eager for such conflict.
