Roger Clemens on How His Sons Introduced Him to Charlie Kirk's Mission to Reach Young Men

Baseball legend Roger Clemens reveals how his four sons introduced him to Charlie Kirk by showing him videos on their phones. Clemens studied Kirk like he once studied opposing pitchers, noticing the small mannerisms that made him effective, like setting down the microphone to truly listen. In this conversation with Will Cain, Clemens discusses Kirk's unique appeal to young men, his wife Erika's strength, playing golf with President Trump, and why he believes celebrities on both sides should be bolder about their political beliefs while still respecting those who disagree.

How Roger Clemens Discovered Charlie Kirk

Roger Clemens didn't discover Charlie Kirk through traditional media or political circles. Instead, the baseball legend learned about Kirk from his four sons, who pulled out their phones and showed him videos of Kirk's debates and public appearances. What started as a casual introduction turned into Clemens studying Kirk with the same intensity he once applied to analyzing opposing pitchers.

In a conversation with Will Cain in Dallas, Clemens shared how Kirk's approach to engaging with young Americans captured his attention. Clemens noted that his sons are well-versed in many subjects beyond sports, and their enthusiasm for Kirk's work sparked his own interest in understanding what made Kirk so effective at reaching America's youth.

Studying Charlie Kirk's Mannerisms

Drawing on his experience as a professional athlete who studied every detail of his opponents, Clemens explained how he watched Kirk's videos looking for the subtle techniques that made him so compelling. One mannerism stood out above all others: Kirk would set down his microphone when he finished speaking so he could truly listen to the questions being asked.

"I loved his mannerisms, like when I would sit in the dugout and watch other pitchers and try and pick up pitches or stuff or mannerisms they do," Clemens explained. "The one that I noticed the most with Charlie was he would take the microphone and set it down when he's done saying his piece so he could listen to the questions that the young kids, the older people were asking him."

This attention to detail impressed Clemens deeply. Kirk would look over his shoulder to his staff when he knew a particularly good question was coming, with an expression that said "This is going to be good." Kirk would also thank people for their questions, displaying a graciousness that Clemens found remarkable.

Charlie Kirk's Impact on Young Men

Clemens emphasized that Kirk's mission extended beyond politics into culture. Kirk's voice resonated particularly with young men who traditionally felt ignored and increasingly lost in America. While Kirk focused on reaching the youth, those same young people began introducing their parents to him—a reverse mentoring dynamic that Clemens himself experienced.

"Can't tell you how many times over the last couple of weeks I've met someone my age or a little older that said they learned of Charlie from their son," Cain noted during the conversation.

Clemens described Kirk as someone who made everyone around him better, using a baseball analogy: "When you have somebody like Charlie on your team, he makes everybody around you better. And that's what you look for. You look for traits in a person from that."

Erika Kirk's Strength

Clemens was particularly moved by Erika Kirk's strength in the aftermath of her husband's assassination. He praised her public appearance and the courage she displayed in addressing the nation during such a difficult time.

"What a tough cookie this lady is," Clemens said. "I mean, listening to her the other day, what strength she had to come on in front of all of us and express her words and I want her on my team. I want to be on her team. I mean, the way she came across and the same thing with Charlie."

Playing Golf with President Trump

The conversation took place on the same day that Ryan Routh was found guilty in his attempted assassination of President Trump. Clemens, who has played golf with Trump multiple times, shared his perspective on the security concerns surrounding the former president.

"I still shake my head from not too long ago when in Pennsylvania they let a gentleman—I say a gentleman, they let a crazy man—into a rally with a golf rangefinder," Clemens said. "I mean, I just shake my head at this stuff. Why are you going to a rally with a golf rangefinder? And why are you going to a golf course with an assault weapon?"

During their most recent golf outing in Virginia, Clemens was impressed not only by Trump's golf game—noting that he hit every fairway but one, missing it by only six inches—but also by his work ethic. Trump was constantly on the phone conducting business, talking to heads of state, and working throughout the entire three hours on the course.

"The man, I don't know how he operates on five and a half hours sleep or whatever it is he gets," Clemens remarked. After watching Trump's performance on the course, Clemens joked, "Okay, I've got money. I went in on that bet you against Biden right now."

Why Clemens Supports Trump

Clemens explained his support for Trump in straightforward terms: "The reason I voted for him because he's no nonsense, common sense and no nonsense. I love that about him."

However, Clemens also emphasized the importance of unity and respect for the office of the presidency, regardless of who holds it. He shared that while he didn't vote for Barack Obama, once Obama became president, Clemens rooted for him to do well for the country. "That's the way that people, that's the way I always feel that people should come together," he said.

A Call for Boldness from Celebrities

Cain raised an important question about celebrity culture in the wake of Kirk's assassination. He noted that some major celebrities, including Chris Pratt, have begun to be more open about their faith and political beliefs, but that the left has historically been much bolder in this area than conservatives.

Clemens responded with a balanced perspective. He would like to see more boldness and honesty from celebrities and athletes, but crucially, from both sides of the political spectrum.

"I would like to see that. Definitely. I would like to see that on both sides," Clemens said. "Even if my celebrity friends are Democrats, we don't have to agree. We still get along. You don't go try and kill somebody."

Clemens emphasized that open debate and disagreement are fundamental to American democracy. "We have, it's open for debate all the time and we talk about our opinions and we're what side of the table we're on, but we're Americans last time I checked."

Raised by Strong Women

When asked about his own values and how they were formed, Clemens pointed to his upbringing. His father died when he was young, so he was raised by his mother and grandmother—two strong-willed women who shaped his character.

"My mom, my grandmother, they raised me. My pops died when I was young. So I was raised by two strong-willed women," Clemens shared. "And I don't think I need to say any more other than that."

This upbringing instilled in Clemens the values of respect, hard work, and the ability to stand firm in his beliefs while still respecting those who disagree—qualities he saw reflected in Charlie Kirk's approach to engaging with all Americans.

[00:04] Welcome back. It's been nearly two weeks

[00:06] since the world lost Charlie Kirk. Since

[00:08] his assassination, we've heard a lot

[00:10] about continuing his mission. But

[00:13] Charlie's mission wasn't just about

[00:14] politics. It was about culture. His

[00:16] voice rang loud to young men who

[00:19] traditionally felt ignored and

[00:21] increasingly lost in America. While

[00:24] Charlie focused on reaching the youth,

[00:26] those same kids began to introduce their

[00:28] parents to him. Can't tell you how many

[00:30] times over the last couple of weeks I've

[00:32] met someone my age or a little older

[00:34] that said they learned of Charlie from

[00:36] their son. And that story includes Roger

[00:39] Clemens whose sons introduced him to

[00:41] Charlie by talking about how amazing he

[00:43] was. Since then, Roger began to watch

[00:45] Charlie studying him and how he appealed

[00:47] to the youth of America. So joining me

[00:49] now here in Dallas is baseball legend

[00:51] Roger Clemens. Roger, awesome to meet

[00:53] you in person.

[00:54] Yeah. Well, thank you for having me and

[00:55] and and welcome to I know you've been

[00:57] here a while, but welcome to the great

[00:58] state of Texas and uh it sure is fun to

[01:01] watch and and listen to you.

[01:03] Thank you so much. Uh it's uh wow, never

[01:06] thought I'd receive a compliment from

[01:07] the Rocket, but I've got one and I'm

[01:09] going to put that in my pocket and keep

[01:10] it. Uh your boys pulled their phones out

[01:12] of their pocket. They introduced you to

[01:13] Charlie Charlie Kirk.

[01:15] Yeah, you said it perfectly. Um, I

[01:16] didn't know much about Charlie and uh a

[01:20] number um 6 months a year ago they uh

[01:24] they introduced me to him and uh I got

[01:26] to know him by just watching uh his

[01:28] debates and online and what a beast. I

[01:31] mean this guy he was verse in so many

[01:33] areas. Uh I loved his mannerisms like

[01:36] like when I would sit in the dugout and

[01:38] watch other pitchers and try and pick up

[01:39] pitches or stuff or mannerisms they do.

[01:42] I really enjoyed it. And the the one

[01:44] that I noticed the most with Char

[01:46] Charlie was uh he would take the

[01:48] microphone and set it down when he's

[01:49] done saying his piece so he could listen

[01:51] to the the the questions that uh the

[01:54] young kids, the older people were asking

[01:56] him questions. And I thought that was a

[01:58] really cool mannerism that he would

[01:59] always set that microphone down so he

[02:01] paid attention and listen to detail. Um

[02:04] so he could answer questions uh from

[02:07] both sides, whatever side it was. I

[02:08] mean, you knew his point and uh uh but I

[02:12] I loved it. Like I said, I watch so many

[02:14] videos of him now and um just appreciate

[02:17] the man.

[02:18] I love that you're watching him like a

[02:19] baseball pitcher, watching the opposing

[02:21] pitcher, watching the mannerisms and

[02:22] where he places the mic. There's a

[02:24] famous clip of Charlie um answering a

[02:26] question about how many times God is

[02:28] invoked in the Declaration of

[02:29] Independence and the Constitution. And

[02:30] you can see in his eyes, and you can see

[02:33] the smile he doesn't want to totally

[02:35] reveal that he's just ready. It's like

[02:37] knowing exactly what pitch you're going

[02:39] to throw and exactly how I'm going to

[02:40] hit this ball.

[02:41] Oh, you you can you hit it spot on

[02:43] again, too. I love it because when he's

[02:45] getting the question and he's already

[02:46] absorbing where it's going, he'll look

[02:48] over to some of his staff over his

[02:50] shoulder every once in a while and say,

[02:51] "This is going to be good." But, uh,

[02:53] when he would get a tough question or I

[02:55] loved it, too, because he would thank

[02:56] people for the question and, uh, just a

[02:59] sweetheart of man. Uh, his his wife

[03:01] Erica, I believe, um, what a tough

[03:04] cookie this lady is. I mean, listening

[03:06] to her the other day, u what strength

[03:08] she had to come on in front of all of us

[03:10] and and express uh her words and uh I

[03:14] want her on my team. I I want to be on

[03:16] her team. I mean, the way she came

[03:17] across and the same thing with Charlie,

[03:20] again, a baseball reference uh will when

[03:22] you have somebody like Charlie uh on

[03:25] your team, he makes everybody around you

[03:28] better. And that's what you look for.

[03:29] You look for traits in a person uh from

[03:32] that. And again, my boys, I have four

[03:34] young men. Uh, they turned me on to it.

[03:36] They're very versed in a lot of

[03:37] subjects, not just the sports field, but

[03:40] uh, what goes on in politics. So, uh,

[03:42] it's been a joy to have to to be able to

[03:44] talk to them about it.

[03:45] Yeah. Isn't that nice to be able to talk

[03:46] to your boys about something other, not

[03:48] just you, me as well, a lot of us

[03:50] talking about something other than than

[03:51] sports. Um, you and I were talking. The

[03:54] breaking news of the day is that Ryan

[03:55] Ruth has been found guilty in his

[03:57] attempted assassination of President

[03:58] Trump. And you and I were talking

[03:59] because you've played a lot of golf with

[04:02] President Trump.

[04:03] I have. And it was great to hear his

[04:05] comments on that, too. I mean, you just

[04:08] take a big deep breath. I mean, uh, you

[04:09] know, I still shake my head from, uh,

[04:12] not too long ago when in Pennsylvania

[04:14] they let a gentleman into I say a

[04:16] gentleman, they let a a crazy man into a

[04:19] rally with a golf rangefinder. I mean, I

[04:21] just shake my head at this stuff. When

[04:23] Why are you going to a rally with a golf

[04:26] rangefinder? Um,

[04:28] and why are you going to a golf course

[04:29] with an assault weapon?

[04:31] Yeah, 100% on that, too. And let me tell

[04:33] you what, when we golf with him last in

[04:35] Virginia, uh, the president hit the ball

[04:37] beautifully. Uh, but it was a little

[04:39] intense when you have 30 golf carts and

[04:41] you have SWAT teams and uh, Secret

[04:43] Service all around you. Um, he handled

[04:47] it great. Uh, he wasn't just golfing, by

[04:49] the way. He was working the entire three

[04:50] hours on the golf course. I was with

[04:52] him. He was he was answering phone

[04:54] calls. He was talking to head of states.

[04:56] the man I I don't know how he operates

[04:57] on

[04:58] and hitting all the fairways. You said

[05:00] he hit every fairway but but one and I

[05:02] think he missed it by six inches and I

[05:04] said after the sixth fairway hit, I

[05:06] rolled up next to him. I said, "Okay,

[05:08] I've got money. I went in on that bet

[05:10] you against Biden right now." Uh after

[05:12] watching this, I said I said, "President

[05:14] 47, you've gotten better." And he's

[05:16] gotten better. But uh uh he's I I don't

[05:19] know how he operates on five and a half

[05:21] hours sleep or whatever it is he gets,

[05:23] but uh again, I love I love him. Uh the

[05:26] reason I voted for him because he's no

[05:28] nonsense. uh common sense and no

[05:30] nonsense. I love that about him. Uh and

[05:33] again, will I I can I can re, you know,

[05:36] back up when when Obama became I didn't

[05:39] vote for him. We have the same birthday,

[05:40] by the way. I didn't vote for him, but

[05:42] once he became our president, I was

[05:44] rooting for him to do something well for

[05:45] us. And that's the way that people

[05:47] that's that's the way I always feel that

[05:48] people should come together.

[05:50] I want to ask you one more question. and

[05:51] I'm pushing the limits of our time

[05:53] together, but and it's going to take me

[05:54] a minute to set this up, but um I think

[05:57] in the wake of Charlie Kirk's

[05:59] assassination, what you've seen is a

[06:02] tiptoeing into the waters of being open

[06:04] and bold, not just about faith, but

[06:06] about politics from celebrities. You've

[06:09] seen uh for example, Chris Pratt and

[06:11] other really big celebrities start to

[06:13] reveal a little more about who they are

[06:15] and what they believe. The left has

[06:17] always been very bold in the celebrity

[06:19] culture of telling you what they

[06:20] believe. You are obviously as big as it

[06:23] gets in the world of sports and you feel

[06:25] strongly and bold in sharing your

[06:28] opinions. Would you like to see that

[06:30] more from athletes? Would you like to

[06:31] see a little more boldness and honesty

[06:33] from the celebrities in your world of

[06:34] sports?

[06:35] I would like to see that. Definitely. I

[06:36] would like to see that on both sides.

[06:38] Even if my celebrity friends are

[06:40] Democrats, uh, you know, we we don't

[06:43] have to agree. We still get along. you

[06:44] don't you don't go try and uh you know

[06:46] kill somebody. Um you know again I I

[06:50] have we have it's open for debate all

[06:52] the time and we talk about our opinions

[06:55] and we're what side of the table we're

[06:56] on but you know we're Americans last

[06:58] time I checked. You know what I'm

[07:00] saying? Uh and and that's just the way

[07:03] you know we we were brought up. You know

[07:04] my mom, my grandmother, they raised me.

[07:06] My pops died when I was young. So I was

[07:08] raised by two strong willed women. And

[07:10] uh I don't think I need to say any more

[07:12] other than that.

[07:13] All right. There you go. And I think the

[07:15] career speaks for itself. Again, it's an

[07:17] honor to meet you uh in person and and

[07:19] to get to know you. Thank you, Roger.
