A Liberal Mourns Charlie Kirk: Reflections on Debate and Tolerance

September 29, 2025

Archie Mackintosh captures his liberal perspective mourning the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk. He reflects on the importance of engaging with opposing views respectfully, the dangers of political violence, and the need for open debate to strengthen ideas and society.

Mourning Charlie Kirk

I am a liberal and I mourn Charlie Kirk. I miss him. Yes, I disagreed with lots of his views, but I also think the world would be a much better place if there were more Charlies in it. It’s a privilege to have people in the world who you disagree with, who you strongly disagree with, people who offend you. This is how you learn, how you stress test your ideas, how you see how robust your beliefs are. To quote Christopher Hitchens, don’t take refuge in the false security of consensus.

The Value of Tolerance and Open Debate

This is a value that liberals especially—the so-called side of tolerance—should be embracing wholeheartedly. But instead, after the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, this is what we saw: hateful comments and celebrations of his death from some on the left. This reaction is deeply disturbing and contrary to the principles of open discourse.

My Experience Debating Charlie Kirk

I met Charlie Kirk in May when he came to the Cambridge Union. I was one of the students who debated him. Before then, I didn’t really know much about him. I’d put him in the same camp as Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder—conservative religious American commentators. From what I heard, I expected a radical right-wing nut. But when I debated him, he matched my respect. He really listened. We had a nice, productive conversation. I did not see the hateful man others warned me about.

Responses from Charlie Kirk’s Fans

What shocked me was how his fans online responded. While some clips were edited out of context, the full video received overwhelming support from his fans. Many expressed surprise that a liberal debating Charlie was respectful and thoughtful, and that they agreed with me for the first time against Charlie. This highlights a fundamental human tendency: if the mind can find an excuse to ignore challenging opinions, it will.

Respect Your Opponents

Raising your voice, showing emotional reactivity, or spewing pre-prepared statements without listening only signals a lack of confidence. If you want your opponents to think differently, you must treat them with respect, patience, and honesty. Make a good argument if you are confident in your beliefs.

Was Charlie Kirk a Hateful Person?

Many liberals argue that if someone spreads hate or misinformation, they should be silenced. But I have seen many call Charlie racist, sexist, transphobic, etc., without solid arguments. Name-calling dismisses people you disagree with but doesn’t make them listen. If you want to change minds, treat opponents respectfully.

Should Hate Speech Be Silenced?

Hate does not spread like a virus to everyone; it preys on vulnerable people suffering frustration, loneliness, and loss of identity. Censoring speech does not cure these vulnerabilities but drives hateful conversations underground, where they become sharper and more dangerous. Exposure to debate builds resilience and herd immunity to hateful ideas.

Why Governments Censor Speech

Governments often prefer censorship because the frustrations hate feeds on stem from societal problems caused by governments themselves. Rather than addressing root causes, they silence dissenting voices. This is why we must resist government censorship to protect free speech.

What Charlie Kirk’s Death Reveals About America

Despite some on the left trying to paint Charlie’s killer as a right-wing Trump supporter, evidence suggests the assassin was a liberal who hated Charlie’s views. This horrific act exposes a sinister trend on the left, where silencing opposition is seen as virtuous. Celebrations of violence only strengthen echo chambers and political polarization.

My Message to Liberals

We need more Charlie Kirks in the world. We need more open debate. We need to embrace challenging and questioning our beliefs to identify what is false. Practice questioning and testing what is true, even when it makes you uncomfortable. If you disagree with me, we can debate it in the comments.
