Portland police are not intervening to protect journalists, residents, or others who face threats and violence. Another reporter was assaulted at the scene, chased down her suspect through the streets, but police refused to come and make an arrest. The same police department later posted a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) asking for public help in identifying the assault suspect—the very person the reporter had already located.
Shirley explains that from his understanding, both the governor and mayor have sided with the protesters, stating they have the right to be there and dismissing concerns about the violence. The result is a section of Portland that operates as a lawless zone, where anyone perceived as opposition faces potential mob violence from people dressed in black.
Over 100 Days of Occupation
The protests have continued for over 100 days, with demonstrators maintaining a constant presence outside the ICE facility. Residents living in the apartment building next door have been pleading for help, but their calls go unanswered. The protesters appear to be well-supplied, with food available and what Shirley describes as an apartment next door where they hold "weird parties" and engage in various adult activities.
The source of funding and support for these extended protests remains unclear. When Shirley posed as a protester, someone offered him ribs to eat, suggesting an organized supply system. The sustainability of a 100-day occupation raises questions about financial backing and organizational structure that Shirley believes warrant investigation.
Dueling Narratives: Trump Versus Oregon Governor
President Trump weighed in on the situation via Truth Social, stating: "The Governor of Oregon must be living in a dream world. Portland is a never ending disaster. Many people have been badly hurt and even killed. It is run like a third world country."
Oregon's governor offered a starkly different perspective, claiming there is no insurrection, no threat to national security, and no need for military troops in the major city. She stated that military service members should be dedicated to real emergencies and are not needed in Portland.
When asked which narrative accurately reflects reality, Shirley was unequivocal: President Trump is right about the lawlessness, and the governor is lying about what's happening. While acknowledging that parts of Portland may be safe, Shirley emphasizes the major issue at the ICE facility, where residents plead for help that never comes and police maintain their absence despite ongoing violence.
A Call for Investigation
Shirley suggests that authorities need to take a serious look at what's happening at the Portland ICE facility. Citizen journalists have already begun identifying who is in control of the protests, providing a foundation for potential investigations. The questions remain: Who is funding these extended protests? How are demonstrators sustaining themselves for over 100 days? And why have local authorities effectively abandoned a section of their city to mob rule?
The situation in Portland represents a troubling example of what happens when law enforcement withdraws from protecting citizens and journalists documenting events.
