Jasmine Crockett Defends Karmelo Anthony After 35-Year Sentence for Stabbing Death of Austin Metcalf
Failed Texas Senate candidate and sitting Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett sparked outrage by defending Karmelo Anthony following his 35-year prison sentence for stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a track meet. Crockett minimized the deadly weapon used in the killing and made controversial comparisons about self-defense. Meanwhile, Anthony's lawyers filed notice to appeal his conviction just one day after sentencing. Video evidence proved central to the jury's guilty verdict, clearly showing what transpired during the fatal confrontation. Five black teammates of Metcalf testified that Anthony was the aggressor, undermining attempts to frame the case as racially motivated. Metcalf's final words were "I had been stabbed" as he bled out with a gaping hole in his chest.
Lawyers for Karmelo Anthony filed a notice to appeal his conviction just one day after he was sentenced to 35 years in prison for stabbing and killing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a track meet. The case, which took place last year, resulted in the tragic loss of a young athlete's life.
Video Evidence Proved Decisive
Video played a crucial role in helping the jury reach its verdict. As prosecutors explained, "The strongest piece of evidence is probably the video. Because it's not really a credibility thing. You don't have to decide do you believe this witness or not. If something happened that the video didn't show, we knew the witness had misremembered or heard something else that they incorporated into their memory. So I think it was helpful to have the video."
Jasmine Crockett's Controversial Defense
Failed Texas Senate candidate and current Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett defended Anthony with a controversial rant about the murder weapon. She questioned the nature of the weapon used, saying: "Was it a switch? I don't know what he had. It was like -- seemed like it was a multi-tool. Almost like a Swiss army knife. You know, the scissors and everything. So it was small. Well, I'd argue the size of it you wouldn't think it's a deadly weapon. If a 300-pound man is beating me down, I'm not limited to fists."
Critics immediately fact-checked Crockett's remarks, pointing out that a weapon, even if it's small, is a deadly weapon if it kills someone. That's the very definition of a deadly weapon.
The Reality of Austin Metcalf's Death
Austin Metcalf's body was on the ground and described as blue and purple as he bled out. His last words were "I had been stabbed." He had a gaping hole in his chest. All accounts of the end of life for Austin Metcalf described hell as he was bleeding out very quickly, literally losing all of his blood.
Crockett also attempted to minimize the stabbing, noting that Anthony "didn't stab him five, six, seven times" but rather "one time, two inches." The implication seemed to be questioning what the argument was—that everyone gets one free murder?
Race Was Not a Factor
For those trying to make this case about race, an important point emerged from the evidence: five of the witnesses that testified were black teammates of Austin Metcalf who testified that Anthony was the aggressor. Race had nothing to do with this case. Nowhere did race become an issue in the conflict that occurred before the stabbing. None of the eyewitnesses mentioned race becoming an issue. Several of the witnesses that testified for the prosecution were black and talked about Austin Metcalf lovingly as he was a teammate of theirs.
Race had nothing to do with this case until after the charges and after action groups got involved and started to polarize people. Many of the protesters were reportedly from out of state and have since disappeared.
Questions About Crockett's Involvement
Commentary raised concerns about what exactly Crockett meant with her 300-pound man comparison. Was she talking about a track athlete? Was she saying she would have done what Karmelo Anthony did? Was she suggesting she would have taken that same action? As a sitting member of Congress with a responsibility to voters, her unclear statements raised eyebrows. Otherwise, it sounded like she would have killed somebody that would end up like Austin Metcalf.
The case was described as having nothing to do with race until action groups became involved. The jury got it absolutely right, with questions only being whether this was manslaughter versus the charges brought.
Remembering Austin Metcalf
Austin Metcalf was 17 years old—a child, a minor when he died. The community has been supporting his family during this difficult time. Karmelo Anthony's mother reportedly wanted $1.2 million, while protesters, many from out of state, have since disappeared. The focus, many argued, should be on remembering Austin Metcalf and supporting his family rather than continuing to discuss his killer.
