The Monologue
On Monday evening, Jimmy Kimmel opened his ABC late night program by addressing what he described as a new low over the weekend — the MAGA effort to characterize Tyler Robinson, the accused shooter, as anything other than one of their own, while simultaneously using Kirk's death to score political points. Trump was scheduled to speak at Kirk's memorial service the same day.
Kimmel then turned to Trump's public responses since the assassination. He played two separate clips in which Trump, responding to questions about Kirk's death, pivoted almost immediately to the White House ballroom — a construction project Trump has described as something presidents have wanted for approximately 150 years. In the first clip, Trump acknowledged the flags being flown at half staff, then was asked how he personally was holding up. His answer within seconds shifted to the trucks beginning construction on the ballroom. In the second clip, Trump described learning of Kirk's death while meeting with architects designing the ballroom. He recounted being told Kirk was dead, not initially understanding what that meant, asking for clarification, being told Kirk had been shot, and then returning to a description of the chandelier installation.
Kimmel's commentary on the two clips: Trump was at the fourth stage of grief — construction, demolition, construction. "This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend," Kimmel said. "This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish."
The FCC Chair Responds
The reaction was swift. Brendan Carr, the FCC Chair and a Trump appointee, appeared on an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson and publicly blasted Kimmel's remarks. Carr urged ABC affiliates to preempt the program. His statement framing the monologue as something requiring an institutional response from broadcasters set off a chain of decisions.
Nexstar Pulls the Program
Nexstar Communications, which operates twenty-three ABC affiliate stations across the country, announced it would no longer carry Jimmy Kimmel Live in response to Kimmel's remarks. The announcement came within hours of Carr's interview.
ABC Cancels the Show Indefinitely
Taking Carr's comments and Nexstar's action as the context, ABC moved to cancel Jimmy Kimmel Live indefinitely. The network offered no public timeline for reinstatement or conditions for the show's return.
Sinclair Goes Further
Sinclair Broadcasting, which operates additional ABC-affiliated stations, said the suspension alone was not sufficient. Sinclair publicly listed three demands before it would consider reinstating the program on its stations: a direct personal apology from Kimmel to Charlie Kirk's family, a donation by Kimmel to Kirk's political organization, and formal discussions between Sinclair and ABC regarding the network's commitment to professionalism and accountability in its programming.
Disney, the Critics, and What Comes Next
The cancellation drew criticism from observers who accused ABC and its parent company Disney of bowing directly to political pressure from the Trump administration and allied media companies. Trump publicly cheered the suspension. The report closes by noting that the full extent of the fallout — for Kimmel, for ABC, and for the broader question of broadcaster independence under pressure from a sitting administration — has not yet become clear.

[00:00] We hit some new lows over the weekend
[00:02] with the MAGA gang desperately trying to
[00:04] characterize this kid who murdered
[00:06] Charlie Kirk as anything other than one
[00:08] of them and doing everything they can to
[00:10] score political points from.
[00:12] >> Here's everything you need to know about
[00:13] the offkey monologue that got Jimmy
[00:16] Kimmel's show pulled indefinitely. The
[00:18] controversy began during Monday's show
[00:20] when the late night comic started off by
[00:23] claiming that MAGA was using Charlie
[00:25] Kirk's assassination to score political
[00:27] points. But Kimmel didn't stop there. He
[00:30] went on to call out President Trump, who
[00:32] was scheduled to deliver a speech at
[00:34] Kirk's memorial service on Monday for
[00:36] what he deemed to be an insufficient
[00:38] reaction to the murder.
[00:39] >> In between the fingerpointing, there was
[00:41] uh grieving. On Friday, the White House
[00:43] flew the flags at half staff, which got
[00:45] some criticism, but on a human level,
[00:48] you can see how hard the president is
[00:50] taking this.
[00:51] >> My condolences on the loss of your
[00:53] friend Charlie Kirk. I ask sir
[00:54] personally, how are you holding up over
[00:57] the last day and a half, sir? I think
[00:58] very good. And by the way, right there
[01:00] you see all the trucks. They've just
[01:02] started construction of the new ballroom
[01:04] for the White House, which is something
[01:06] they've been trying to get, as you know,
[01:08] for about 150 years. And it's going to
[01:10] be a beauty. Yes. He's at the fourth
[01:14] stage of grief, construction.
[01:17] Demolition.
[01:20] Construction.
[01:22] This is not how an adult grieavves the
[01:24] murder of someone he called a friend.
[01:25] This is how a four-year-old mourns a
[01:27] goldfish. Okay.
[01:28] >> Kimmel then doubled down, sharing that
[01:31] it wasn't the first time since Kirk's
[01:32] murder that Trump redirected a question
[01:34] about the Turning Point USA founder back
[01:37] to the White House ballroom.
[01:38] >> And it didn't just happen once. When I
[01:40] heard it, I was in the midst of, you
[01:43] know, building a great for 150 years.
[01:45] They've wanted a ballroom at the White
[01:48] House, right? They they don't have a
[01:49] ballroom. They have to use tents on the
[01:51] lawn for President Xi when he comes
[01:53] over. If it rains, it's a wipe out. And
[01:56] so I was with the architects that were
[01:58] design. It's going to be incredible. And
[02:00] they came in. They said, "Charlie Kirk
[02:04] is dead." I didn't know what they meant.
[02:06] I said dead. Charlie Kirk was shot.
[02:11] And they s they thought he was dead
[02:12] because it was so horrific, you know.
[02:15] >> And I said dead.
[02:18] And then we installed the most beautiful
[02:20] chandelier. You sponsor you wouldn't
[02:23] believe. There's something wrong with
[02:26] them. There really is. I mean, the
[02:28] backlash to Kimmel's monologue was
[02:30] swift, including from the Federal
[02:31] Communications Commission chair Brendan
[02:33] Carr. The President Trump appointee
[02:36] blasted Kimmel's remarks and urged
[02:38] affiliates to preempt his program.
[02:40] During an interview with conservative
[02:41] podcaster Benny Johnson, change needs to
[02:44] happen on Kimmel. Carr said Nextstar
[02:47] Communications, which operates 23 ABC
[02:49] affiliates, announced it would no longer
[02:52] carry the program due to Kimmel's
[02:54] remarks. Hours later, ABC took Carr's
[02:56] words and Nexar's actions to heart and
[02:59] cancelled the show indefinitely.
[03:01] Sinclair Broadcasting took things even
[03:03] further, announcing that the suspension
[03:05] wasn't enough and vowing to yank Jimmy
[03:07] Kimmel Live from its stations until the
[03:09] host apologizes directly to Charlie
[03:11] Kirk's family and donates to his
[03:13] political activist group. The company
[03:15] also demanded that formal discussions
[03:17] are held with ABC regarding the
[03:19] network's commitment to professionalism
[03:21] and accountability. Kimmel's removal has
[03:23] sparked fierce debate with critics
[03:25] accusing ABC and its parent company
[03:27] Disney of bowing to political pressure
[03:29] as President Donald Trump cheered the
[03:31] suspension. All this as the dominoes
[03:34] continue to fall and true extent of the
[03:36] fallout has yet to be seen.
