Trump Mourns Charlie Kirk as Social Media Erupts in Grief and Celebration

President Trump announced Charlie Kirk's death in a post on Truth Social, describing him as "the great and even legendary Charlie Kirk" and writing that "no one understood or had the heart of the youth in the United States of America better than Charlie." While millions expressed grief and horror at the news, thousands of social media users celebrated Kirk's assassination, sharing dancing videos, party balloons, and memes captioned "rest in piss." The disturbing contrast between the grief of those Kirk had touched and the celebration from those who had demonised him exposed the depth of America's political divide.

President Donald Trump announced the death of Charlie Kirk in a post on Truth Social. "The great and even legendary Charlie Kirk is dead," Trump wrote. "No one understood or had the heart of the youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by all, especially me. And now he is no longer with us. Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erica and family. Charlie, we love you."

A Nation Divided in Its Response

The announcement triggered an immediate outpouring of grief across social media. Kirk was a father of two with millions of followers and billions of views, known for engaging students in debate on college campuses — often in the face of intense hostility.

But alongside the grief came something deeply disturbing. Thousands of social media users openly celebrated Kirk's death. One user posted a video of herself dancing with the caption "Charlie Kirk was just shot in the neck. This is cause for celebration." Others shared images of party balloons and memes captioned "rest in piss." The popular X account Lives of TikTok compiled a series of these responses and described them as "pure evil."

Kirk had long argued that free speech was not a value the left held dear: "Speech is not a left-wing value. They believe in totalitarian control." The reaction to his death appeared to vindicate that assessment for many of his supporters.
