Standing Through Suffering: Finding Divine Strength When Life Tries to Break You
Erika Kirk's powerful reflection on enduring life's darkest moments through faith. Drawing from the image of Mary standing at the cross and the spiritual warfare described in Ephesians 6, this message explores how divine grace enables us to bear what seems unbearable. Through personal testimony of profound loss and the wisdom found in Scripture, discover that while our strength can only take us so far, God's power sustains us when we stand firm. Every person carries their own cross, faces their own battles, but we share a common truth: this broken world may try to break us, but Jesus already broke himself for us.
When life becomes unbearable, you find a way to stand. You just do. Though incredibly difficult, standing becomes possible through the grace that flows from Scripture and divine strength. Two biblical moments illuminate this truth: standing in suffering and standing against the wickedness of the devil.
The most beautiful depiction of standing in suffering appears in John chapter 19 verse 25, where Mary the mother of Jesus stands at the foot of the cross. She witnessed the most unjust violence against the love of her life, the love of our life. Yet what did she do? She didn't scream. She didn't accuse. She didn't try to explain God. She wasn't pulling her hair out. She just stood. With her friends beside her, she stood with composure and the divine power of patience.
When you trust in the Lord, you have no idea what you can bear until you're tried. In those moments, you know that His grace is sufficient because you can feel it. You can deeply feel it.
Standing Against Spiritual Warfare
The second aspect of standing comes from Ephesians 6, which addresses standing against the wickedness of the devil. What makes this passage fascinating is its placement immediately after Ephesians 5, which discusses the proper order of marriage and love. If you have an Ephesians 5 marriage, you better read Ephesians 6, because the Lord is going to use your marriage in ways that will blow your mind.
In Ephesians 6 verses 10-18, Paul intentionally uses the word "stand" twice. The first time you stand is your choice because you decided to put on the full armor of God. As feeble as that attempt might be, you put it on. But then in verse 14, after you're standing your ground, it says, "Stand firm then." Paul emphasizes perseverance while highlighting that your strength can only take you so far.
As one grandmother wisely said, "Your running legs can only take you so far. Jesus does the rest." When you stand firm, that's not you—that's God's strength. You stood the first time, ready for battle, bracing yourself. God says, "Just stand firm."
Practical Wisdom for Impossible Moments
Getting off of Air Force 2, looking at Usha, the words came: "I have no idea how I'm going to do this." Her response offered the most practical wisdom anyone could give for those going through difficult times. She said, "You know when you're on an airplane flying with your kids and there's 15 minutes left on this plane ride and your kids are losing their mind. Toys are flying everywhere. Passengers are looking at you like, 'Why are you a terrible parent?' You're trying so hard to negotiate with this little human that has negotiation on lock because they just—It's always why, no why, no. And then the plane lands and you survived those 15 minutes and then the next 15 minutes and then the next."
Standing and watching a husband's casket get taken off that plane, holding hands with family and friends—you just do it. You just stand.
The Cross We All Bear
The way God carries each person through their darkest moments is the way He wants to carry you through your trial, through your life. Each cross is personal. Your cross is yours to carry. You have your own. One is not better or worse than the other. It's just different. Life is different for all of us.
What we profoundly share in common is that we are all operating within a world that is broken, evil, and dark. We're all touched by confusion. We're all touched by disappointment. We're all touched by loss. We all suffer in different ways that are personal.
But here's the reminder: this world might feel as if it is going to break you, but Jesus already broke himself for us. When everything seems impossible to bear, His grace proves sufficient. When your own strength fails, His power enables you to stand firm. In the midst of unbearable pain, the same strength that held Mary at the foot of the cross is available to hold you through whatever you face.
