Tyler Robinson's Defense Fights to Keep the Graphic Charlie Kirk Shooting Video Out of Court
Another high-stakes hearing looms in the case against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk last September at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University, as his defense team objects to graphic video of the killing being introduced as evidence, calling it disturbing to anyone who views it. Robinson, 22, faces capital murder charges that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted. His attorneys are renewing their push to have the entire Utah County Prosecutor's Office removed from the case, pointing to a conflict of interest after it emerged that the eighteen-year-old child of a senior prosecutor was a student who attended the event and fled the scene when the shot rang out. Prosecutors counter that the conflict claim doesn't hold up, since the prosecutor's child never actually witnessed the shooting, never saw a weapon, and isn't a material witness, and they argue the defense's broader strategy is simply to stall the proceedings.
Tyler Robinson's defense team is asking the court to keep video of Charlie Kirk's assassination out of the courtroom, calling the footage "graphic and highly disturbing to anyone who views it." Kirk was murdered last September while speaking at a Turning Point USA event with students at Utah Valley University. Robinson, 22, faces capital murder charges that could bring the death penalty if he is convicted.
Renewed Effort to Disqualify Prosecutors
Robinson's defense has also renewed its push to have the entire Utah County Prosecutor's Office removed from the case, citing a conflict of interest. It has emerged that the eighteen-year-old child of a senior prosecutor, a student at the university, was present at the Kirk event and, according to Robinson's attorney, heard the shot and fled with the panicked crowd.
"This is a motion to disqualify the county attorney's office based on what we believe is a material, significant conflict of interest that it's clear they have not even tried to address by way of a screening," Robinson's attorney said.
Prosecutors Push Back
Prosecutors argue there is no real conflict, noting that the prosecutor's child did not actually witness Kirk being shot, did not see anyone with a gun, and is not considered a material witness in the case.
"I think this is ambush and another stalling tactic to delay these proceedings," one prosecutor said.
Prosecutors have said they plan to show video or screenshots of Kirk at the event during the next hearing, arguing the move is not prejudicial to Robinson since the trial has not yet started and no jury has been seated to be influenced by it.
