The Mormon Church Question Asked Moments Before Kirk Was Shot

The Mormon Church, formally the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, came up in two very different settings, one an ordinary campus theological debate and the other a devastating historical footnote. Hunter Kozak, a Utah Valley University student who publicly debated Charlie Kirk on statistics around political violence, described growing up Mormon in California before moving to Utah to attend Brigham Young University, saying he had once believed strongly in the faith and been a committed supporter of Mitt Romney specifically because Romney shared it, before drifting away from the church over time. He also described watching informal theological debates break out among students waiting in line at Kirk's events, exchanges that touched on the doctrinal differences between Mormon teaching and traditional Christian belief regarding Christ's nature and resurrection. Separately, witness Henry Dallas, who was selected to ask Kirk the very first question at the Utah Valley University event, recounted that his question was about the Latter-day Saints church specifically, part of what he described as a respectful exchange about the faith's emphasis on family and raising children, a conversation that took place only moments before Kirk was shot. Dallas, who said he and friends had studied Kirk's own debate tactics and found him a genuine inspiration, described being able to ask that question as a meaningful, almost unbelievable opportunity, one whose weight changed entirely once he learned what happened right after he stepped away from the microphone.
