Catastrophic Flooding Claims 82 Lives in Texas
Ben Bergquam reported from the ground in Texas following a catastrophic flooding event that has claimed at least 82 lives, including 55 adults and 27 children. Among the most heartbreaking aspects of this tragedy are 10 children from Mystic Camp, a Christian summer camp, who remain unaccounted for.
Bergquam was traveling home to spend his first Fourth of July with family in four years when he received news of the disaster. He immediately turned around and headed back to the scene. Standing at a location that was 15 feet underwater during the flood's peak, he described the unimaginable scale of destruction, with water reaching the top of nearby bridges.
The Scope of Missing Persons Remains Unclear
When Bergquam pressed local officials about the total number of missing persons, he could not get a definitive answer. After asking whether they were dealing with dozens or hundreds of missing individuals, the response he received was simply "a lot," leading him to conclude the number exceeds dozens.
The recovery effort has now transitioned from rescue to recovery mode, as the 72-hour critical window for finding survivors has largely passed. Despite this grim reality, Bergquam emphasized the importance of continued prayer for the missing and their families.
Unprecedented Weather Event Devastates Community
The flooding resulted from a storm system that stalled over Texas for hours, dumping over 15 inches of rain in some locations instead of the forecasted four to six inches. Bergquam noted that while Texas and other dry areas have used cloud seeding for years to help farmers—particularly after the previous year was one of the driest on record, with the river actually stopping—this particular storm's behavior was exceptional.
He acknowledged that while questions about contributing factors are legitimate topics for future discussion, anyone suggesting the community should have known better is engaging in unfair hindsight criticism. Flood warnings and watches are common in the region, but events of this magnitude are not.
How to Help the Affected Communities
For those wanting to assist, Bergquam specifically recommended donating to the Hill Country Community Foundation rather than national organizations like the Red Cross. He emphasized that local communities know best how to allocate resources effectively. Information about donations can be found on the City of Kerrville's website or Facebook page.
He also urged people not to come to the area to conduct their own investigations or recovery efforts, as professional teams are handling the operation efficiently.
Federal Response Praised Amid Political Attacks
Addressing attempts to blame President Trump for the disaster, Bergquam called such accusations "absolute nonsense." He contrasted the current response with what he witnessed during East Palestine and the North Carolina and Tennessee disasters under the previous administration, which he characterized as "dismal failures" marked by wasted taxpayer dollars.
Bergquam, who has covered multiple disasters, stated that the coordination between President Trump, Governor Abbott, Kristi Noem, and local officials represents the best disaster response he has ever witnessed. He described Trump's approach as that of an efficient businessman making strategic decisions to help the country, with all levels of government working in unprecedented coordination.
He concluded by calling anyone claiming otherwise a liar, emphasizing that from the local to state to federal level, this response has been exemplary.

[00:30] Now, let's go to what's going on in
[00:31] Texas. It's a unspeakable, terrible
[00:33] tragedy. What do we need to know about
[00:36] what's going on in Texas? Walk us
[00:37] through what happened the last couple
[00:38] days. How did this happen? And how can
[00:40] people help?
[00:43] Yeah, this is it is an unspeakable
[00:45] tragedy. I was actually on my way home
[00:46] for the 4th of July. It was the first
[00:47] Fourth of July I was going to be able to
[00:49] spend with my family in four years. I
[00:51] was driving, almost got to Tex Arcana,
[00:53] and then I got message that they were
[00:55] that this was happening. turned around,
[00:57] came back down here. Uh, and all I can
[00:59] think is, you know, I miss my family for
[01:01] Fourth of July, but at least I get to go
[01:03] home and see them. Uh, most up-to-date
[01:05] numbers we just got this morning from
[01:07] the sheriff and city administrators. Uh,
[01:10] 82 dead with 55 adults, 27 children, 10
[01:15] of these children from the mystic camp,
[01:17] this uh, Christian summer camp that are
[01:19] still unaccounted for. And I asked the
[01:21] question, what are we talking? What's
[01:22] the total universe of missing? And I've
[01:24] been asking that the last three days and
[01:26] I have not gotten an answer. Uh today
[01:28] they said the same thing. They can't
[01:29] give an answer. I said, "Well, are we
[01:30] talking dozens or hundreds?" And the
[01:33] response was a lot. So you can you can
[01:35] read into that what that means. Uh it's
[01:38] not dozens. And so that's where we're at
[01:40] right now. This was a catastrophic
[01:42] weather event. I also followed up the
[01:44] question and not to get in the weeds on
[01:46] geoengineering and the rest of it, but
[01:47] there's no question about it. Texas, a
[01:50] lot of these dry areas have been using
[01:51] cloud seeding for years to help the
[01:54] farmers in these areas. Uh last year was
[01:56] one of the driest years on record. In
[01:59] fact, the river actually stopped running
[02:00] last year and so they've been using it.
[02:02] And I just asked the question, is there
[02:03] as as the mainstream media is going
[02:05] after this trying to pin this on
[02:06] President Trump? I think it's
[02:07] legitimate. That's not legitimate. But
[02:09] what's legitimate is to say, are there
[02:11] other factors that played into this? the
[02:13] fact that this storm came and stopped
[02:15] basically parked over Texas for hours
[02:17] and hours and hours and instead of
[02:19] jumping four inches to six inches of
[02:21] rain, it dumped over 15 in some
[02:23] locations. That's where we're at right
[02:25] now. The, you know, it's a tragedy. Uh
[02:28] these kids should have hopefully, you
[02:31] know, you think back and you think, man,
[02:32] we should have gotten them out of there.
[02:34] But h coming from Arkansas, spending
[02:36] watching these these weather patterns
[02:38] come up, you know, you see this all the
[02:40] time, flood warning, flood watch, you
[02:42] never think I'm standing, just to give
[02:43] you perspective, you can see the broken
[02:45] down car truck behind me. If I turn the
[02:47] camera, uh you can see the river in the
[02:49] distance there. I'm standing 15 feet
[02:53] underwater where this flood was. The the
[02:55] bridge back behind me there, the water
[02:58] went all the way up to the top of that
[03:00] bridge. So the the the amount of water
[03:02] we're talking about is really
[03:04] unimaginable and and it's something that
[03:07] doesn't happen. So anybody out there
[03:09] saying, "Well, you should have known,
[03:10] you should have done, you should have
[03:11] done all we could talk about all that
[03:13] stuff after the fact." We definitely
[03:15] need to look at that. Should we have
[03:16] flood sirens like we have tornado
[03:18] sirens? Definitely worth talking about.
[03:20] But right now, the entire focus is on
[03:22] finding those 10 missing girls and the
[03:24] rest of the missing now presumed, you
[03:27] know, moving from that rescue to
[03:29] recovery. We're in that phase now. 72
[03:31] hours, very few rescues will happen. We
[03:34] keep praying though, and that's my
[03:35] message to everyone. Your final
[03:37] question, how can people help? Uh there
[03:39] is a community uh Hill Country Community
[03:41] Foundation that's set up. I would I
[03:43] would ask you guys, don't give your
[03:44] money to Red Cross. Give your money
[03:46] local to the local community. They know
[03:48] how best to spend it. And it's the uh
[03:50] community foundation of the Hill
[03:51] Country. You can go on the city of uh
[03:55] Kurville's web or Facebook page. You can
[03:56] get all the details there. That's where
[03:58] I would ask you to send the money. uh
[03:59] send your donations. Don't come here.
[04:01] Don't try to do, you know, your own
[04:03] investigations. Do do your own recovery
[04:05] efforts. Don't do that. Let these guys
[04:07] do it. It is being handled. President
[04:08] Trump, Christine Nome, uh Governor
[04:10] Abbott, down to the local. These guys,
[04:12] I've never seen an operation so
[04:14] efficient and so good. So, keep them in
[04:16] your prayers. Keep the family in your
[04:18] prayers. And if you want to contribute,
[04:19] do it to the local communities.
[04:21] Okay, really quick. Uh one minute
[04:23] remaining though, Ben. Uh people are
[04:24] blaming President Trump for this. What
[04:26] What is your response to that?
[04:30] Yeah, it's absolute nonsense. I watched
[04:32] East Palestine, I watched uh North
[04:34] Carolina and Tennessee, the dismal
[04:36] failures of the last administration when
[04:38] they were blowing, wasting all of our
[04:39] money, trillions of our dollars on
[04:41] things on garbage. What President Trump
[04:43] is is he is a businessman. He's an
[04:45] efficient businessman. Everything he
[04:46] does, the decisions he makes are
[04:48] strategic to making decisions that help
[04:50] our country. Everyone from the top down
[04:52] has said every all of that is absolute
[04:54] nonsense. The reaction, the response
[04:56] we're seeing here is the top the the
[04:59] best response I've ever seen. Again,
[05:00] having covered all those other disasters
[05:02] from the local, the state, and the
[05:04] federal level, this is by far the best
[05:06] response I've ever seen. Anyone saying
[05:07] otherwise is a liar.
[05:10] Ben Burwam, God bless you. Uh I hope you
[05:12] get home to your family soon. Thanks for
[05:13] your great work. Thank you.
