Charlie Kirk Claims DEI Caused Texas Flood Deaths
The devastating flood in Kirk County, Texas has left the community and nation in mourning. Charlie Kirk has positioned himself as a prominent voice responding to the tragedy, declaring the country is in a state of national mourning. However, his response has taken an unexpected turn, focusing not on natural causes or infrastructure failures, but on diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
According to Kirk, the media is hiding a critical truth about the disaster. "What you are not being told by the media anywhere is that the death toll likely would not have been as high if it wasn't for DEI," Kirk stated. While most observers point to natural causes potentially exacerbated by climate change, coupled with budget cuts that eliminated key scientific positions, Kirk has chosen a different explanation.
The Case Against Austin Fire Chief Joel Baker
Kirk's argument centers on Austin Fire Chief Joel Baker and events dating back a decade. In 2014, the Obama administration sued the Austin Fire Department for alleged racial discrimination, resulting in a settlement. A few years later, Joel Baker was selected as Austin's first black fire chief.
"When you hire people based on race, you're not hiring based on skill," Kirk argued. He points to Baker currently facing a vote of no confidence from his union for allegedly denying the pre-deployment of resources to Kirk County, Texas.
However, this accusation faces significant challenges. The mayor of Austin has stated that Baker was not negligent and actually characterized his relief effort as going above and beyond. Even if Baker had been negligent, critics argue that would make him someone who failed at his job, not evidence that he was a DEI hire.
The Irony of the Resource Allocation Argument
Kirk accuses Baker of not supplying proper resources to people in need. Yet this represents the stated policy position of the current administration. Donald Trump campaigned on cutting funding from agencies whose goal is to prevent disasters and provide support when they occur.
The pattern reveals a double standard: when white officials jeopardize the safety and well-being of Americans, finger-pointing is discouraged. But when a black person allegedly does the same, it becomes presented as another example of DEI destroying the nation.
The Military Helicopter Crash Precedent
This is not the first time Trump has blamed DEI for disasters. In January, when military helicopters were crashing, questions arose about attributing the accidents to diversity policies.
"I'm trying to figure out how you can come to the conclusion right now that diversity had something to do with this crash," one interviewer asked.
"Because I have common sense, okay? And unfortunately, a lot of people don't. We want brilliant people doing this. This is a major chess game," came the response.
Trump's Anti-DEI Executive Actions
Trump made the eradication of diversity, equity, and inclusion the centerpiece of his re-election effort. Upon taking office, he took immediate action. President Trump continued a flurry of executive actions with new orders aimed at ending all federal diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated: "President Trump campaigned on a merit-based society where people are hired based on their skills, not for the color of their skin."
The Merit-Based Appointments in Question
The administration claims to operate on merit, yet the track record of appointees raises questions. Sean Duffy led the Department of Transportation when Newark airport had to cancel numerous flights because it was deemed unsafe. He was also in charge when helicopters and planes were colliding with increasing frequency. For this performance, President Donald Trump named Duffy as interim administrator of NASA.
Other appointments include:
- A weekend Fox anchor as Secretary of Defense
- An antivax conspiracy theorist with no medical or public health degree as Secretary of Health and Human Services
- Howard Lutnick as Secretary of Commerce
This administration represents a collection of individuals serving in roles for which many lack traditional qualifications. This reality reveals what Republican protests against DEI are actually about, critics argue. The objection is not to unqualified people, but specifically to people who are not white men.
DEI Lawsuits Expand Beyond Government
The campaign against DEI has expanded into sports and corporate America. The Los Angeles Dodgers are being sued over the team's diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. The suit was filed by America First Legal, a conservative group founded by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.
The lawsuit claims that the Dodgers and their ownership group Guggenheim Partners illegally discriminate against straight white men. The suit was filed less than two weeks after the team denied federal immigration agents access to Dodger Stadium.
The Corporate DEI Backlash
Corporate America faces similar attacks. Critics of DEI claim that companies "churned out these DEI graduates who were ready to go into all of corporate America and DEI their companies."
"There is no problem. There is not systemic bias in corporations against females or minorities. The opposite is the case. Females and minorities are being privileged at every possible opportunity. It's straight white males who are being disadvantaged by their race and sex and sexual preferences," one commentator argued.
The History of Three-Letter Acronym Demonization
The Republican party has been demonizing three-letter acronyms for decades. Before DEI, the murder of George Floyd brought CRT (Critical Race Theory) into the mainstream, which conservatives characterized as a worse offense than the actual killing.
Before CRT, after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement began as a reaction to the belief that black lives matter.
Before even that, George W. Bush introduced WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) and painted anybody skeptical of his claims as America-hating traitors.
The right has grown so accustomed to fear-mongering about these acronyms that sometimes supporters don't even understand what they oppose.
In one interview exchange:
"Do you think that there should be rules about what is taught in school?"
"Oh, absolutely."
"Like, what wouldn't you like to see?"
"There's critical race theory."
"What is critical race theory?"
"I don't know."
The Political Strategy Behind DEI Opposition
The weaponization and vilification of three-letter acronyms is nothing new. The agenda being enacted is considered too unpopular to stand on its own merits. Instead, it gets repackaged and sold as something different.
Spinning tax cuts for the wealthy while simultaneously cutting millions of dollars from education, rural hospitals, Medicaid, weather warning systems, and food stamp programs requires sophisticated messaging. This is where figures like Charlie Kirk and others in the conservative ecosystem play their role.
They spend their time creating fear around DEI, pitting white people against brown people against black people, inflaming racial tensions. This provides elected officials the cover they need to pursue unpopular policies, like making themselves richer at the expense of the poor.
The strategy operates constantly and without shame because political movements need enemies to survive and maintain relevance. Without external threats to rally against, the underlying policies become harder to justify on their own merits.
Video Transcript
[00:00] It turns out water wasn't the cause of
[00:02] all that wreckage in Texas. It was just
[00:04] a flood of DEI. This is just another
[00:07] day.
[00:10] The horrors of the devastating flood in
[00:12] Kirk County, Texas are still being felt
[00:14] by the community and our nation as a
[00:16] whole. And no one is grieving more than
[00:18] Charlie Kirk.
[00:19] >> We are in a state of national mourning,
[00:21] as we should be. And the Democrats,
[00:23] they're so despicable.
[00:24] >> Yes. I believe every good eulogy during
[00:26] a state of national mourning begins with
[00:27] the ceremonial bashing of the dirty
[00:30] libs. Please continue.
[00:32] >> What you are not being told by the media
[00:34] anywhere
[00:35] is that the death toll likely would not
[00:38] have been as high if it wasn't for DEI.
[00:42] >> Sure. But while most people can point to
[00:43] the myriad of logical causes for what
[00:45] happened, such as an act of God
[00:47] exacerbated by climate change, coupled
[00:48] with budget cuts that eliminated key
[00:50] scientific positions, the other much
[00:52] less beloved Captain Kirk has decided to
[00:55] go another way.
[00:56] >> Let me prove it to you. In 2014, the
[00:59] Obama administration sued the Austin
[01:01] Fire Department about 11 years ago, fire
[01:03] union, for supposed racial
[01:05] discrimination resulting in a
[01:07] settlement. So, the Obama administration
[01:10] was so worried that the fire department
[01:13] in Austin, Texas was racist because, you
[01:15] know, when you're putting out fires, you
[01:17] got to make sure that you have a diverse
[01:18] fighting force. So, a few years later,
[01:20] they picked Joel Baker as their first
[01:23] black fire chief. But when you hire
[01:25] people based on race, you're not hiring
[01:27] based on skill. So, right now, Baker is
[01:29] facing a vote of no confidence by his
[01:30] union for, this is the key, for denying
[01:33] the pre-eployment of resources to
[01:35] Kurville, Texas. It goes without saying
[01:37] for a guy with gums like these, but your
[01:39] argument lacks teeth. Look, if it turns
[01:42] out that Baker, Austin's fire chief, was
[01:44] in fact negligent, which the mayor of
[01:45] Austin has said he wasn't, and even
[01:47] categorize his relief effort as going
[01:49] above and beyond, that would be one
[01:51] thing. But even if he was negligent,
[01:53] that still doesn't make him a DEI hire.
[01:56] It makes him a guy who screwed up at his
[01:58] job. If you pay attention to politics
[02:00] today, you're probably intimately
[02:02] familiar with people like that. And
[02:04] let's take a step back here. What is
[02:06] Charlie Kirk accusing Baker of exactly?
[02:08] Not supplying the proper resources to
[02:10] people in need. That is literally the
[02:13] mantra of this administration. Donald
[02:15] Trump campaigns on cutting funding from
[02:17] agencies whose goal is to prevent
[02:19] disasters and giving people support when
[02:21] they inevitably do. Somehow when white
[02:24] people jeopardize the safety and
[02:25] well-being of Americans, it's not the
[02:28] time to point fingers. But when a black
[02:30] person does it, suddenly it's another
[02:32] instance of DEI destroying our once
[02:34] great nation. And it's an excuse Donald
[02:37] Trump falls back on over and over again.
[02:40] Remember back in January when military
[02:41] helicopters were crashing on his watch?
[02:44] >> I'm trying to figure out how you can
[02:45] come to the conclusion right now that
[02:47] diversity had something to do with this
[02:49] crash.
[02:50] >> Because I have common sense, okay? And
[02:53] unfortunately, a lot of people don't. Uh
[02:56] we want brilliant people doing this.
[02:58] This is a major chess game.
[03:00] >> Yeah, probably not the best example to
[03:02] use considering even a chess game has an
[03:04] equal amount of black players. Nothing
[03:06] that Donald Trump can't solve with a
[03:08] simple fix. Trump made the eradication
[03:10] of diversity, equity, and inclusion the
[03:13] centerpiece of his re-election effort.
[03:14] And the minute he got into office, he
[03:17] took action. President Trump continuing
[03:19] a record- setting flurry of executive
[03:21] actions with a new series of orders that
[03:24] aimed to end all federal diversity,
[03:26] equity, and inclusion or DEI programs.
[03:30] President Trump's press secretary,
[03:32] Caroline Levit, telling NBC News in a
[03:34] statement, quote, "President Trump
[03:36] campaigned on a merit-based society
[03:39] where people are hired based on their
[03:41] skills, not for the color of their
[03:43] skin." That's right. based on their
[03:45] merit, the caliber of their work, like
[03:47] Shawn Duffy, the guy who was leading the
[03:49] Department of Transportation when just
[03:51] months ago, Newark airport had to cancel
[03:53] tons of flights because it was deemed
[03:55] unsafe, and also the guy in charge when
[03:57] those helicopters and planes were
[03:59] running into each other more than Matt
[04:00] Gates runs into the high school girls
[04:02] track team when he just happens to be
[04:04] out for a casual jog. What did Shawn
[04:06] Duffy get for his merit?
[04:08] >> President Donald Trump names US
[04:09] Transportation Secretary Shawn Duffy as
[04:12] interim administrator of NASA. NASA.
[04:16] Sure, why not? Trump saw planes falling
[04:18] out of the sky and thought, "Okay, but
[04:19] what if they fell from a higher
[04:21] altitude?" And it's not just Duffy.
[04:23] Let's take a look at the rest of this
[04:25] administration. An administration that
[04:27] for the first time in history is based
[04:29] solely on merit. We've got a weekend Fox
[04:32] anchor as the Secretary of Defense, an
[04:34] antivax conspiracy theorist who has no
[04:37] medical or public health degree as
[04:38] Secretary of Health and Human Services.
[04:40] We've got Howard Lutnik leaving his
[04:42] full-time role as Trump's fluffer to
[04:44] serve as Secretary of Commerce. This
[04:46] administration is a who's who of people
[04:48] who have no business serving in their
[04:51] roles, which puts on full display what
[04:53] Republican protests against DEI are
[04:55] actually about. They're not looking for
[04:57] qualified. They are looking for white
[04:59] men. That's all this is. The way this
[05:01] administration paints DEI is simply a
[05:04] less explicit form of racism and is
[05:06] their scapegoat for everything. The
[05:08] Dodgers are being sued over the team's
[05:11] diversity, equity, and inclusion
[05:13] policies. That's according to a report
[05:15] from the Hollywood Reporter. The suit
[05:16] was said to have been filed Monday by
[05:18] America First Legal, a conservative
[05:21] group founded by White House Deputy
[05:23] Chief of Staff and Santa Monica native
[05:24] Steven Miller. The lawsuit claims that
[05:27] the Dodgers and their ownership group
[05:29] Guggenheim Partners illegally
[05:31] discriminate against straight white men.
[05:34] The suit was filed less than two weeks
[05:36] after the team said they denied federal
[05:38] immigration agents access to Dodger
[05:41] Stadium.
[05:41] >> Right. Because if I know anything about
[05:43] Major League Baseball, one class that is
[05:45] most underrepresented is straight white
[05:48] men. And it's not just sports. Corporate
[05:50] America is also dealing with this
[05:52] horrible scourge of DEI. They churned
[05:54] out these DEI graduates who were ready
[05:56] to go into all of corporate America and
[05:59] DEI
[06:02] their companies. There is no problem.
[06:05] There is not systemic bias in
[06:07] corporations against females or minor
[06:09] minorities. The opposite is the case.
[06:11] Females and minorities are being
[06:13] privileged at every possible
[06:15] opportunity. It's straight white males
[06:17] who are being disadvantaged by their
[06:20] race and sex and sexual preferences.
[06:22] >> Yeah. When will white guys in corporate
[06:24] America finally catch a break? And by
[06:26] the way, this war on three-letter
[06:28] acronyms is not new. The Republican
[06:30] party has been demonizing three-letter
[06:32] acronyms for decades. And I'm not even
[06:34] talking about HPV, which I'd presume
[06:37] they have in great supply. Before DEI,
[06:40] the horrific murder of George Floyd
[06:41] brought CRT into the mainstream, which
[06:44] according to conservatives became a
[06:45] worse offense than putting your knee on
[06:47] a nan's neck for 9 minutes and 29
[06:49] seconds. Before CRT, after George
[06:51] Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting
[06:53] death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed
[06:55] black teenager, the BLM movement began
[06:57] as a reaction to people believing that,
[06:59] you know, black lives matter. And before
[07:02] even that, George W. Bush trotted out
[07:05] WMDs and painted anybody skeptical of
[07:07] his claims as America-hating traitors.
[07:10] The right has been demonizing these
[07:11] three-letter phrases for years. In fact,
[07:13] they've grown so accustomed to the
[07:15] fear-mongering about these acronyms that
[07:17] sometimes they don't even know why
[07:19] they're so afraid.
[07:20] >> Do you think that there should be rules
[07:22] about what is taught in school?
[07:23] >> Oh, absolutely.
[07:25] >> Like, what wouldn't you like to see?
[07:27] >> There's critical race theory.
[07:28] >> Yeah, that critical race theory. As soon
[07:29] as I heard about that, I'm like, why are
[07:34] we doing this?
[07:35] >> What is What is critical race theory?
[07:38] >> I I don't know. I haven't
[07:41] >> Right. I don't know what it is, but I
[07:43] hate it. What are you, a 5-year-old who
[07:44] has just served broccoli? Not only is
[07:46] the weaponization and vilification of
[07:48] three-letter acronyms nothing new, but
[07:50] trying to make it seem new is the most
[07:53] onbrand move for Donald Trump outside of
[07:55] his marriages. Talk about the rule of
[07:57] threes. The truth is that the agenda
[07:59] Trump is enacting is too unpopular to
[08:01] stand on its own feet. So instead, Trump
[08:04] slaps some gold paint on it.
[08:05] >> They've never found a paint that looks
[08:07] like gold.
[08:07] >> Sorry, goldish paint. and then attempts
[08:10] to sell a garbage product as if it's
[08:12] something great. But spinning tax cuts
[08:14] for the wealthy while then ripping away
[08:16] millions and millions of dollars from
[08:17] education and rural hospitals and
[08:20] Medicaid and weather warning systems and
[08:22] food stamps programs is not easy. You
[08:25] need to sell it. And you can't sell
[08:27] trash ideas like that without trash
[08:29] people like this. Charlie Kirk and
[08:32] everybody else in his putrid ecosystem
[08:34] on the right spends every waking moment
[08:36] of their days whipping Americans into a
[08:38] frenzy over DEI, pitting white people
[08:41] against brown people against black
[08:42] people, inflaming tensions on race, all
[08:45] so that their elected officials can get
[08:47] the cover that they need to do whatever
[08:49] they want, like making themselves richer
[08:51] at the expense of the poor. They do it
[08:53] constantly and without shame because
[08:55] villains need enemies to survive because
[08:58] without them they're just with
[09:00] a up mouth.
