Charlie Kirk Confronts Democratic Socialism: The 100 Million Dead Bernie Sanders Won't Mention

July 13, 2017

Charlie Kirk addresses one of the most common political debates facing young Americans: the difference between democratic socialism and socialism, and why that distinction doesn't matter. Drawing on historical evidence from Stalin to Maduro, Kirk argues that democratic socialism is simply rebranded authoritarianism that has killed 100 million people in the last century. He points to Venezuela, where the average citizen has lost 36 pounds while their leader gains weight eating caviar, as a modern example of socialism's inevitable outcome. Kirk warns that socialism's core promise is false: the poor never get richer, everyone with anything becomes equally poor, and a tiny elite controls everything.

The Democratic Socialism Debate

One of the most frequent conversations Charlie Kirk has with people involves the confusion around Bernie Sanders' political ideology. Many people describe Sanders as a democratic socialist, believing this somehow distinguishes his views from traditional socialism. Kirk addresses this misunderstanding head-on, calling it one of the most important discussions of our time.

Kirk recommends a PragerU video by Steven Crowder that addresses this topic, praising it as an excellent resource for understanding the distinction—or rather, the lack thereof—between democratic socialism and socialism.

Democratic Socialism: A Rebranded Ideology

According to Kirk, democratic socialism is fundamentally the same as socialism, just presented under a different banner. He argues that the ideology is immoral, evil, impractical, and historically catastrophic when put into practice.

The term "democratic socialism" is not new or benign. Kirk points out that this exact phrase has been used by some of history's most murderous dictators:

  • Joseph Stalin
  • Vladimir Lenin
  • Hugo Chavez
  • Fidel Castro
  • Pol Pot
  • Mao Zedong

These leaders operated under the guise of democratic socialism while committing atrocities against their own people. Kirk emphasizes that 100 million people died in the last 100 years under governments that called themselves democratic socialist.

Venezuela: A Modern Warning

Kirk brings the discussion from historical examples to present-day reality by highlighting Venezuela. He references Joanna Rodriguez, a Turning Point USA regional director whose family escaped Venezuela, crediting her with doing amazing work while carrying the burden of seeing her homeland destroyed.

The situation in Venezuela illustrates socialism's inevitable outcome:

  • People are eating dogs in the streets
  • The average Venezuelan has lost 36 pounds in the last year
  • Citizens are dying of starvation
  • Meanwhile, leader Nicolás Maduro is gaining weight
  • Maduro drinks champagne at night and eats caviar on his balcony window

This contrast demonstrates the cruel irony of socialism: the people who voted for and supported a democratic socialist government are starving while their leader lives in luxury.

The Real Promise of Socialism

Kirk breaks down what socialism actually delivers versus what it promises. The left loves to talk about equality, and socialism does create a form of equality—but not the kind anyone would want.

Under socialism, Kirk explains, the poor will never get richer. Instead, people who have anything will become equally poor. Everyone achieves equality, but it's equality in poverty. Meanwhile, a tiny elite of a couple thousand people becomes magnificently rich, controlling the entire country and everything in it.

This two-tiered system—mass poverty for the many, extreme wealth for the few—is the consistent outcome of socialist experiments throughout history.

How to Respond

Kirk suggests responding to democratic socialism advocates not with statements but with questions. By asking questions based on the historical and current evidence, you force people to confront the reality of what this ideology has produced.

The Biggest Failure of Our Time

Kirk believes the biggest failure in human history over the last 100 years has been our collective inability to recognize and learn from the failure of socialism. Despite overwhelming evidence of its catastrophic results, the ideology persists and even gains traction.

What horrifies Kirk most is that socialism is now on American shores. The ideology that killed 100 million people, that is currently causing Venezuelans to starve in the streets, is being promoted by mainstream political figures in the United States. For Kirk, this represents an existential threat that Americans must recognize and reject before it's too late.

[00:00] one of the biggest like issues like

[00:02] conversations I have with people back

[00:04] home is like oh um Bernie Sanders social

[00:07] like no it's Democratic socialism is

[00:09] completely I love this and I like it's I

[00:13] talk soci best like punch back line to

[00:16] come at that because that's always think

[00:18] he's a Democratic Socialist so first of

[00:20] all there's a great prageru video about

[00:21] this that Steven Crowder did uh

[00:23] excellent excellent um is so don't fall

[00:27] for that I mean Democrat socialism you

[00:31] know the people's social it's socialism

[00:33] which inherently means the following it

[00:35] is immoral it is evil it is Impractical

[00:37] and put in practice so you should say

[00:39] this under the banner and guise of

[00:41] democratic socialism which is a term

[00:43] that Joseph Stalin used which is a term

[00:45] that uh Lenin used which is a term that

[00:48] Hugo Chavez used which is a term that

[00:50] Fidel Castro used which is a term that

[00:52] Paul pot used which is a term that Malu

[00:56] 100 million people died in the last 100

[00:58] years 100 million people died under

[01:01] Democratic

[01:02] socialism what Bernie Sanders wants to

[01:05] bring to this country he wants to bring

[01:07] an ideology that killed people and is

[01:09] killing people to this day we have a

[01:11] regional director Joanna Rodriguez her

[01:13] family's from Venezuela she does amazing

[01:15] work families from Venezuela they're

[01:17] eating dogs in the streets the average

[01:19] Venezuelan has lost 36 pounds in the

[01:23] last year they're dying of starvation

[01:26] but you know what their leader Maduro

[01:28] he's gaining weight he has shamp

[01:29] campaign at nights and he eats caviar on

[01:32] the balcony window while the people

[01:34] thought that they voted for and

[01:36] supported a Democratic Socialist

[01:38] government so what really happens in

[01:40] socialism is is to put simply is the

[01:43] poor will never get richer but people

[01:45] who have anything will get equally poor

[01:47] so you're equal we all love they love

[01:49] equality left loves equality right well

[01:51] you'll all be equally poor and the very

[01:53] very about a couple thousand people will

[01:55] be so magnificently rich and they'll

[01:57] have everything and control the entire

[01:59] country and so again I would respond to

[02:01] that with questions and ask all

[02:03] everything I said back in question form

[02:05] but I believe the biggest failure in

[02:07] human history in the last 100 years has

[02:09] been our inability to recognize the

[02:11] failure of socialism and the fact that

[02:14] it's here now on our Shores horrifies me
