The Unlikely Partnership That Started a Movement
Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens took the stage at the Western Conservative Summit to thunderous applause, fresh off a grueling schedule that included early morning Fox and Friends appearances, multiple radio shows, donor meetings, documentary filming, and cross-state drives through Los Angeles traffic. For Kirk, this marked his fifth appearance at the summit, an event he first attended at age 19. For Owens, it represented the culmination of a journey that began less than a year earlier when she uploaded her first YouTube video.
Owens recounted being bedridden during the 2016 election cycle, watching in frustration as racism and sexism were weaponized as political themes to guarantee votes rather than address real issues. She created a satirical video titled "Mom, Dad, I'm a Conservative" without explicitly stating her political positions, simply identifying as conservative. The response was immediate and vicious: racist comments calling her an Uncle Tom and bed wench flooded in. Rather than retreating, Owens and Kirk shared a common trait: being called names only inspired them to fight harder.
How Charlie Kirk Built Turning Point USA from Scratch
Kirk founded Turning Point USA at age 18 after being rejected from the United States Military Academy at West Point, a rejection he now considers the best thing that never happened to him. Disturbed by the indoctrination happening in schools and the misrepresentation of American history, he told his parents he would skip college to start an organization for six months. That conversation did not go well, he admitted, but six years later, Turning Point USA had expanded to 1,300 college and high school campuses across the country.
The organization hosts over a thousand young women at their Young Women's Leadership Summit and brings together more than 5,000 young conservatives annually at their largest gathering in Palm Beach. Kirk described witnessing a genuine movement for freedom on college campuses, a rejection of political correctness and the Marxist ideas that have plagued civilization for the past century.
The Three and a Half Minute Job Interview
Kirk met Owens at an event in November and hired her approximately three and a half minutes later. Owens laughed as she recalled Kirk's aggressive recruitment: "You sit down, stay here, I'm gonna get you a contract. I don't need you to—I need you to sign the contract. Just write your name, just move your finger." The deal was done, and what followed changed the trajectory of conservative activism.
Kirk recognized immediately that Owens possessed qualities unlike any other conservative voice: confidence, articulation, charisma, fierceness, humor, and directness. Most importantly, she could navigate between the worlds of culture and politics, something conservatives traditionally struggle to do. At their first dinner after hiring her, Owens told Kirk she believed Kanye West would be the one to break out of the liberal matrix. Kirk admitted he had no idea who Kanye was, asking if he was the one married to Beyoncé. Owens made him download Kanye's music, and Kirk eventually conceded that Kanye had good beats.
The Kanye West Prophecy
Months before it happened, Owens publicly predicted Kanye West would speak out for truth. In an August 2017 appearance on The Rubin Report, she explained her admiration for Kanye, noting that his brand was about believing in yourself to an almost delusional degree, holding onto your own ideas before school stripped you down and made you think you couldn't succeed. She recognized that Kanye had always been anti-politically correct, from his infamous Taylor Swift moment at the VMAs to his 2016 Trump Tower visit after people claimed he had a mental disorder.
Owens saw the connection between understanding Kanye West and understanding the Donald Trump movement: both represented pure anti-political correctness. She identified three critical verticals the left had successfully hijacked in black America. First, family—they broke down black families by removing black fathers from homes. Second, culture—when black youth lack parents to guide them, they turn to hip-hop, media, and celebrities like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyoncé, and LeBron James, who essentially become surrogate parents. Third, education—black people are actively learning their history wrong in public schools, which function as propaganda systems indoctrinating black youth against things that would ultimately help them.
The Tweet That Changed Everything
After Kirk and Owens spoke at UCLA, where Owens handled a black lives matter protester, clips started going viral. Early Saturday morning, Kirk received a phone call from Owens, who was crying. Kanye West, who hadn't tweeted in 18 months, had posted: "I love the way Candace Owens thinks." Owens cried not because of celebrity worship but because she immediately understood what had just happened: they had cracked culture. The left's stranglehold on Hollywood and the underground ecosystem of conservatives afraid to speak up had been challenged.
Kanye followed up the next day with tweets wearing a MAGA hat and declaring that if the mob couldn't make him stop loving Donald Trump, they had no power. What Kanye did cannot be understated, Owens emphasized. He gave permission to every black person in America to think independently and differently. Kirk somehow ended up included in a meeting with Kanye West at Trump Tower, prompting confusion from blue checkmark pundits who wondered what he was doing there. The moment was defining because Owens and Kanye discovered they had much in common regarding improving the black community, but they also celebrated the fact that they didn't have to agree on everything.
Destroying the Monolith Through Independent Thinking
The goal was destroying the monolith, encouraging people to think independently, look at actual policies, and remove emotion from the equation. On college campuses, Owens tells students that someone has successfully hijacked their emotions. In moments of pain and frustration, like watching the horrifying video of Philando Castile reaching for his wallet and being shot by a police officer, people can be manipulated. No conservative thinker would say that was okay, but then activists tell them it happens every day, that it's an epidemic, that black people must fight against police officers. That's where things go wrong, because the truth is police officers save black lives.
The dialogue started shifting as people began leaning in and understanding the message: there is no value in being a victim. Every single person in the world experiences pain and hurt. What matters is how you respond. Kirk emphasized that no community has been harmed more by Democrat policies and politicians than black America, yet they keep voting for the same policies and politicians. Show him an American ghetto, and he'll show you Democrats in control: Oakland, Philadelphia, Chicago. The most murderous, broken cities are run by Democrats.
The Stanford Awakening
Just 14 days before the Western Conservative Summit, a powerful moment occurred at Stanford University. A young black man stood up and explained that he had been researching black lives matter and understanding how they're funded by white liberals. He felt like they were white liberals in blackface because white liberals care about feminism, LGBTQ issues, but don't really care about black people. He declared himself off the plantation, empowered, no longer dependent. He noted that black lives matter was started by three lesbian women and questioned what it meant that the movement never mentions black fathers.
Owens celebrated another person leaving the plantation, explaining how the left manipulates through linguistics and euphemisms. Planned Parenthood sounds positive until you discover they're killing 800 black babies every single day. Who would be against Planned Parenthood or black lives mattering? But when you do a deep dive into the finances, you realize black lives matter is a political arm of the Democratic Party designed to keep black people enslaved and dependent through their emotion and anger. The movement never talks about things that would actually help the black community: black fathers in homes, addressing the single motherhood rate that jumped from 25% to 73% in black communities.
Why the Congressional Black Caucus Sat Silent
When Donald Trump announced record low black unemployment at the State of the Union, the Congressional Black Caucus sat emotionless while they had stood and applauded when Obama announced more food stamps. This reveals the truth: melanin in your skin does not dictate what your interests are. Maxine Waters lives in a six million dollar home outside her district and gets paid to keep the racism narrative alive. That's her full-time job: saying racism as many times as possible every time she steps to a podium.
The problem is black politicians have had their pockets lined to keep black people dependent. When there were fewer black politicians in office, black people were doing better in America. When there were only 1,500, the community thrived. Today there are over 10,000 black politicians, the country had a black president for two terms, and the black community is worse off. The left overplayed their hand by failing to recognize the progress Trump made for black America and urban America. Trump has done more in 18 months for black America than Obama did in eight years.
The Government as God
Kirk and Owens had the opportunity to sit in the Oval Office as fierce and dedicated supporters of the president and his agenda. Kirk believes that if Trump's opponent had won, Western civilization would have been wiped out. He believes it was a divine intervention. The line that gets the most opposition on campus is simply stating that God is real.
The left wants people to believe the government is God, that government can fix all their problems, not family, not religion, not caring about your children, but government and policy. This is the deification of the state, the classic Marxist playbook that Mao, Stalin, and Pol Pot used. Eliminate the Judeo-Christian construct, eliminate the capacity for individuals to make choices, get rid of the church, private philanthropy, and charity. When you eliminate the moral order, people still search for meaning and purpose, and what replaces it is the state and the ruler. There is no greater evil than trying to make yourself God.
The War for Western Civilization on Campus
Turning Point USA activists wage battles on the front lines of campuses where students truly believe in communism and socialism, where children hate America in the bottom of their souls. This is what's being taught on college campuses. The demonization of America happens in colleges, high schools, middle schools, and kindergartens, where children learn that America is evil and that they are oppressors.
Make no mistake: America is the greatest country in the history of the world. Americans are the luckiest people ever to live at this time in this country. The nation represents 5% of the world's population and gave away over 500 billion dollars voluntarily to charity last year—the GDP of Hungary, Bulgaria, Belgium, Spain, and Switzerland combined, on top of US tax dollar payments. America is the only country in history to voluntarily send troops to die for the rights and freedoms of others. Look no further than the Korean War, where 50,000 American servicemen died for the freedom and creation of South Korea.
Students wearing USA shirts and chanting USA are told this is a racist chant, a sexist chant, a chant of oppression. Kirk and Owens wake up every day inspired because they feel they are fighting a war as soldiers and generals. But it's not enough to sit idle and listen to ideas. Everyone must get involved in any way they can. In war, you have fighters, supporters, and financiers. That's the only way to win, and right now Western civilization teeters on the brink.
The Defining Cultural Battle
The ideas being taught in universities and high schools directly threaten the future of the country. Look at the political success of Bernie Sanders, an outward socialist who got millions of votes in the Democrat primary and would have won the nomination if Hillary Clinton hadn't stolen it from him. Marxism has become mainstream. Hating America has been popularized by Hollywood, media, and educational elites.
Now there's a president willing to fight for the country and its beliefs, something that hasn't existed in a very long time through the failures of Bush and Clinton's globalist narrative and retreat from American exceptionalism. Democrats are going all-in for 2018 and beyond. The left is relentless, digging into backgrounds, threatening families and friends, calling high school contacts to ask questions like whether Owens ever dated a black man. They see Kirk and Owens as tremendous threats, and they should.
The message is clear: remember that as people try to sway opinions, the opposition only wins if conservatives are divided. Everyone must come together for the sake of America and Western civilization. The nation faces a defining cultural battle with two possible directions: recommit to founding values of free enterprise, individual liberty, and respect for Western civilization, or go a completely different direction that deteriorates the individual, destroys the Judeo-Christian ethic, eliminates private property rights, and turns America into a society of victims instead of victors.
Would you rather have America look like California or Texas? Turning Point USA is adding 50 staff members, conducting 35 campus stops for the midterms in all key states, hosting multiple leadership summits for young women, Latinos, high schoolers, chapter leaders, and young black Americans. The haters better have stamina because Kirk and Owens are just getting started. If anyone thinks they can outwork them, they're wrong. They're going to win.
