Violent Attack at UC Berkeley
A Turning Point USA recruiter was brutally attacked at the University of California-Berkeley while tabeling and recruiting for the organization's campus chapter. The assault was captured on video, showing the student being punched in the face in what appears to be an unprovoked attack. University police confirmed they are investigating the incident, and the Chancellor released a statement condemning the violence as unacceptable.
Charlie Kirk, founder and president of Turning Point USA, appeared on television to discuss the attack and its broader implications for conservative students on college campuses. Kirk emphasized that such attacks happen far too often and that this incident was one of the more brutal ones in recent memory. He noted the irony that UC Berkeley, once the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement decades ago, has become an unsafe environment for students expressing conservative viewpoints.
Media Coverage Disparities
The discussion turned to the stark difference in media coverage between this attack and other reported incidents. Donald Trump Jr. weighed in on the incident, pointing out that when a liberal figure reports an attack, it receives massive coverage, sympathy, and support, creating a tsunami of attention. However, when a conservative student is literally punched in the face on video, it barely makes a ripple in the news cycle.
Kirk contrasted the minimal coverage of this documented assault with the extensive media attention given to other cases before all facts were known. He argued that despite video evidence of a conservative student being violently attacked, the incident received far less scrutiny and airtime than it deserved.
Campus Climate for Conservative Students
Kirk expanded the conversation to address the broader climate for conservative students on college campuses across the country. He cited prestigious institutions in the Washington D.C. area including American University, George Washington University, Catholic University, and Georgetown University as examples of campuses where conservative students wearing Make America great again hats would be taking a significant risk.
Student activist Angelo Kotaro pushed back on this characterization, citing an incident where a student wearing a confederate flag hoodie came through a cafeteria without facing threats of violence. However, Kirk maintained that there is a fundamental imbalance on college campuses, with only liberal groups attempting to disinvite speakers or remove conservative voices from campus.
The Double Standard Debate
The conversation highlighted the different standards applied to incidents involving political ideology. Kirk argued that if the attacker had been wearing a Make America great again hat and the victim had been from a different background, the story would have dominated news cycles and fit into a pre-existing narrative about political violence.
Angelo acknowledged believing initial reports of other incidents at face value, citing FBI statistics showing hate crimes have risen 17% since President Trump took office. Kirk countered that the increase in reported hate crimes is likely due to more agencies now reporting to the national database, not necessarily an actual increase in incidents.
Culture of Victimhood
Kirk argued that there is a toxic culture surrounding victimhood in America, though he and Angelo disagreed on the source of this culture. Kirk suggested that Democrats want to maintain political domination over certain groups, but that people are beginning to think for themselves and break free from monolithic political allegiances.
Drawing from six years of experience visiting hundreds of college campuses, Kirk emphasized that only liberal groups have attempted to kick him off campus or disinvite speakers. He noted that conservative groups do not try to silence left-leaning speakers, pointing to what he sees as a completely slanted environment in one political direction on college campuses.
Looking Forward
The segment concluded with Kirk expressing optimism that people are beginning to think independently rather than adhering to predetermined political alignments. He playfully suggested he would work to convert Angelo to conservatism, acknowledging the student activist's intelligence while maintaining that open dialogue and exposure to different ideas is essential on college campuses.
The attack remains under investigation by university police, with authorities seeking information about the individual caught on video assaulting the Turning Point USA recruiter.
Video Transcript
[00:00] and just this week at the University of
[00:01] california-berkeley a turning point USA
[00:04] recruiter was brutally attacked we don't
[00:07] know what happened before this video but
[00:09] it doesn't look good oh you could hear
[00:32] that if you ever been punched in the
[00:33] face you know how much that hurts
[00:34] well we reached out to the University
[00:36] and police say they're investigating the
[00:38] incident joining me now is Charlie Kirk
[00:40] founder and president of the group that
[00:42] was attacked an author of campus battle
[00:45] feel also with me American University
[00:46] student and the activist Angelo Kotaro
[00:49] is that right am I getting that Rashad
[00:50] Rashad I'm so sorry Charlie how often do
[00:53] these types of attacks happen against
[00:55] conservative are too often and this one
[00:57] was one of the more brutal ones we've
[00:58] seen recently and the narrative in the
[01:01] media in the last couple weeks on but
[01:03] before the facts came out with the
[01:05] Smollett case is he's a victim we cannot
[01:07] question it this is real victimhood I
[01:09] mean this is a student that was
[01:11] assaulted in the public square because
[01:13] he was tabeling and recruiting for
[01:15] conservative values for our turning
[01:17] point USA chapter at UC Berkeley which
[01:19] ironically was the original birthplace
[01:21] of the Free Speech Movement you know 30
[01:23] or 40 years ago but unfortunately
[01:25] college campuses have not become safe
[01:27] places for conservatives there's a
[01:29] picture of him by the way in the middle
[01:30] how have they not found him yet looks
[01:35] like the same person actually that's the
[01:36] guy who attacked he was on Hannity
[01:38] tonight but there is a anyone knows this
[01:40] guy call the authorities because the the
[01:43] university the Provost I believe the
[01:45] Chancellor put out a statement saying
[01:47] this is unacceptable we do not allow
[01:49] this Angelo this is what Donald Trump
[01:51] jr. he weighed in on this he said when a
[01:53] liberal like Jesse cries wolf and fakes
[01:55] an attack he receives unmatched coverage
[01:57] sympathy and support creating a tsunami
[01:59] of attention when a conservative student
[02:01] literally gets punched in the face and
[02:03] it's caught on video it barely makes a
[02:04] ripple Angelo well here's the thing with
[02:07] that is that when this story first came
[02:10] out was Jesse Smollett our first
[02:11] impression was that this was
[02:13] a legitimate hate crime incident and the
[02:15] reality is that presidents President
[02:16] Trump has taken office hate crimes have
[02:18] risen 17% that's numbers from the FBI's
[02:20] own statistics so the reality here is
[02:23] that while mr. Bhalla may have
[02:25] fabricated this one incident the reality
[02:27] is that crimes on the rise that I
[02:30] believe is because more agencies are now
[02:32] reporting hate crimes that's why that
[02:35] number seems a lot higher than it was
[02:36] previously because now you have more
[02:38] inputs before those agencies weren't
[02:40] reporting all into the national database
[02:42] for hate crimes but any hate crimes a
[02:44] problem and I agree with you I don't
[02:45] want any hate crimes but we're talking
[02:47] about the disparate coverage and I mean
[02:49] American University George Washington
[02:52] University Catholic University George
[02:54] hunt all great schools right in this
[02:55] area a conservative wearing a make
[02:58] America great again hat on those
[03:00] campuses would be would be would be kind
[03:04] of risking it that's a fact would be
[03:06] risking it and I know a lot of great
[03:08] kids who go to Georgetown it's a great
[03:09] school great people but they'd be
[03:11] risking it wouldn't they I don't think
[03:13] that's true she just recently said live
[03:16] right now ray you I know it well good
[03:18] kids but there's a lot of we used to
[03:19] actually we just recently had an
[03:21] incident where a student came through
[03:22] our cafeteria wearing a confederate flag
[03:24] hoodie didn't go to school there wasn't
[03:27] a student had no threats of violence
[03:28] against him but we did have some
[03:30] students who were uncomfortable with it
[03:31] and they talked to security there and
[03:33] asked them if they could do anything
[03:34] about it they didn't end up doing
[03:35] anything about it
[03:36] yeah well that so this video which is
[03:38] horrifying if the attacker was wearing a
[03:40] make America great again hat this is all
[03:42] we would be talking about it would be
[03:43] talking about right into the narrative
[03:45] imagine if a kid like Jessie was hit in
[03:48] the face no no like hit in the face like
[03:49] a kid hit in the face by someone who was
[03:52] a conservative kid of college Republican
[03:55] angel oh come on you know yeah you're a
[03:57] smart guy Angela I'm trying to get
[03:58] Angelo to be a conservative I'm gonna
[04:00] win him over
[04:01] okay I'm gonna win leave the left before
[04:02] we're doing I'm gonna win Angelo over
[04:04] he's too fun and he's too smart I know
[04:06] you are but you know there's a double
[04:08] standard on that come on you can't be
[04:10] saying college campuses are balanced
[04:12] today they're well here's what the
[04:13] double standard is the double standard
[04:15] the difference here is that with the
[04:17] incident with just these smaller we
[04:18] believed that it was an actual incident
[04:20] you're talking about you know an attack
[04:23] against somebody who was a member of a
[04:25] must Oracle a marginalized group he's
[04:27] person of color you believe it when you
[04:28] heard it did you actually believe it I
[04:29] did believe it yeah because neighborhood
[04:32] in Chicago Streeterville
[04:33] who the heck walks through shirt
[04:35] Streeterville not madness no 1:00 in the
[04:36] morning with Maggie I mean it's just it
[04:38] was ludicrous on its face we got people
[04:40] on the other end was like Laura no I
[04:41] don't believe that for two seconds
[04:43] people have call her here
[04:44] well you're one of the points you're
[04:45] talking about is this culture of victim
[04:47] abut the real toxic culture here's
[04:48] what's coming from this president it's
[04:50] his dark vision for America and this
[04:52] idea that if you're he was having a
[04:54] great time today well he was having a
[04:56] great great time tonight Black History
[04:59] Month it was it was oversubscribed at
[05:01] 300 people there charlie yeah three
[05:03] people couldn't get in because it was
[05:04] over pack I mean I think Democrats want
[05:07] to hold on to this this domination
[05:10] political domination of one group I
[05:12] think their time is up I think it I
[05:13] think people are now thinking for
[05:15] themselves I think that's a good thing
[05:16] super quick I've been doing this for six
[05:18] years now visited hundreds of campuses
[05:19] it's only liberals I try to kick me off
[05:22] campus I mean we never try to disinvite
[05:24] left the speaker's they come on campus
[05:26] it is completely slanted in one
[05:28] direction they're afraid of other ideas
[05:30] Angelo I want you back I'm gonna bring
[05:32] you over you're gonna become a
[05:33] conservative Angelo's too smart to be
[05:35] otherwise isn't that I shouldn't say
[05:36] that you can think for yourself baby
[05:38] whatever you want thanks guys thank you
[05:40] up next judge Laura takes the bench
