The Race Transforms From Referendum to Binary Choice
Charlie Kirk analyzes a critical turning point in the presidential campaign. Six weeks prior, the media and Biden campaign operated in collusion, creating a strategy where Biden would shelter in place and let Trump run against himself. This referendum-style approach initially seemed viable to Democrats.
However, President Trump delivered one of his best months during August, fundamentally changing the race dynamics. According to Kirk, internal and public polling showed the race tightening to within the margin of error, with enthusiasm decisively favoring the President. This forced Biden to abandon his basement strategy and actually campaign in front of the American people unscripted.
Kirk argues that referendums are historically difficult to win, while binary choices favor the challenger's position. The transformation from a Trump referendum to a Trump versus Biden race created a more favorable environment for the President.
Biden's Competency Questions Come Into Focus
As Biden emerged from his extended seclusion, Kirk suggests Americans began questioning his capability to serve as President. Kirk paints a picture of someone who might fall asleep during critical meetings with world leaders like Xi Jinping, raising concerns about Biden's ability to negotiate international trade deals or military agreements.
The anti-Trump strategy that defined Biden's campaign faced similar challenges to Hillary Clinton's failed 2016 approach. Simply being the opposition candidate without presenting a compelling alternative vision proved insufficient then and appeared equally problematic in this race.
The Minnesota Freedom Fund Scandal
Kirk exposes how Biden campaign staff bailed out individuals he describes as terrorists through the Minnesota Freedom Fund. Before becoming the vice presidential nominee, Senator Kamala Harris actively promoted this fund to raise money for releasing insurrectionists from jail.
This financial support for those arrested during riots created a direct connection between the Biden-Harris campaign and the violence unfolding in American streets. Kirk questions who funds these protests, noting that demonstrators staying at expensive Washington DC hotels suggests significant financial backing beyond grassroots support.
The Democrat Messaging Collapse on Riots
Kirk traces how Democrats' strategy on civil unrest completely unraveled. Initially, they ignored the riots entirely, dismissing them as peaceful protests in what Kirk calls a gaslighting strategy. This approach didn't just backfire—it reached a point where Americans recognized they were being systematically lied to by the Democrat Party.
The pivot began when Don Lemon, during a handoff to Chris Cuomo, acknowledged that the riots were showing up badly in polling and focus groups. Kirk notes the cynicism of this concern—not that lives were being destroyed or people murdered, but that it resonated negatively in data.
Following this revelation, Democrats scrambled to develop new messaging over a weekend, suddenly claiming the riots were Trump's fault. Kirk highlights the absurdity of this shift: after months of calling them peaceful protests, Democrats now acknowledged their existence but blamed the President, despite the violence occurring exclusively in Democrat-controlled cities where Trump had offered National Guard assistance.
Kenosha as Trump's Victory Lap
President Trump's visit to Kenosha represented what Kirk describes as a victory lap. The President brought in the National Guard and saved homes and businesses from destruction, creating a stark contrast between order under federal intervention and chaos under Democrat governance.
The visit served as a tangible demonstration of what happens when Joe Biden supporters are allowed to operate unchecked versus when law and order is restored. This visual comparison proved powerful for voters concerned about safety and stability.
The Issue Advantage Shifts to Trump
Kirk analyzes campaign dynamics through the lens of issue ownership. In elections, the candidate who controls which issues dominate the conversation typically wins. Joe Biden found himself forced to discuss arson, looting, crime, and disorder—topics where he held no advantage.
Kirk credits Trump as the best offensive player in American political history, capable of forcing opponents to contest elections on issues where he holds strength. Law and order, along with the ability to live quiet and peaceable lives, became central themes—areas where Biden and what Kirk calls his rioting base held fundamentally opposing positions to mainstream American values.

[00:00] joining me now from phoenix arizona
[00:02] founder and president of turning point
[00:04] usa
[00:04] and host of the charlie kirk show
[00:06] charlie kirk charlie it's great to see
[00:08] you
[00:09] yeah glad to be here thanks so much so
[00:11] uh charlie what's worse having people go
[00:13] to joe 3003-0 or this really strange
[00:16] nintendo
[00:17] virtual campaign or both well look i
[00:20] think they should have been farther
[00:21] apart i
[00:22] i don't i think they were too close
[00:23] together um yeah look it's it's a very
[00:25] bizarre moment i have to compliment the
[00:27] president here because six weeks ago
[00:29] the media and the biden campaign in
[00:31] collusion with each other
[00:32] they felt that there wasn't a campaign
[00:34] at all and joe biden's entire strategy
[00:36] was shelter in place
[00:37] let donald trump in his opinion just run
[00:40] against himself
[00:41] and president donald trump had one of
[00:42] the best months of august that he had in
[00:44] his entire presidency the month of
[00:45] august
[00:46] and the poll numbers internally and
[00:48] publicly as we've been told by many
[00:50] different reports
[00:51] have now basically are all within the
[00:52] margin of error the enthusiasm is
[00:54] definitely in the president's favor
[00:55] and now joe biden is forced to campaign
[00:57] and now we actually see him
[00:59] having to go in front of the american
[01:00] people unscripted and
[01:02] people start to see that this guy is not
[01:04] capable of becoming president united
[01:05] states and he'll fall asleep halfway
[01:07] through a meeting with gigi ping
[01:08] not exactly someone that you want to be
[01:10] negotiating the next
[01:12] nafta or you know important
[01:13] international trade deals let alone
[01:15] uh military arrangements or agreements
[01:17] with other countries and so the race now
[01:20] has really become
[01:20] trump versus biden where in mid-july and
[01:23] early august this was a referendum on
[01:25] president trump
[01:26] which is very hard to win referendums it
[01:27] just is um it's a lot easier to get
[01:29] people upset with just a singular
[01:31] person in charge and actually break it
[01:33] into a binary decision
[01:34] and now that it's really a race it
[01:37] really i think favors the president
[01:38] yeah we see biden coming out of the
[01:40] basement like a roach after fumigation
[01:42] and this is because they see the polling
[01:44] and you know their strategy was to just
[01:46] hide him
[01:47] they think that they could just sail by
[01:49] this election without having him answer
[01:51] questions of the people who would be
[01:52] supporting and voting for him and i
[01:54] think this idea of just being the
[01:56] anti-trump candidate isn't going to work
[01:57] it didn't work for hillary clinton in
[01:59] 2016. so why would it work now and then
[02:01] also we see biden trying to steal
[02:02] trump's ideas
[02:03] now he's criticizing the riots and the
[02:05] chaos and the unrest happening in this
[02:07] country
[02:07] when uh actually that's not how he felt
[02:09] and what is it kamala harris and others
[02:12] had actually paid for some of these
[02:13] protesters to be released from jail and
[02:15] and added to their funds so they could
[02:17] go out there i mean people someone's
[02:18] funding
[02:19] these riots and the chaos going on i
[02:22] don't know if you heard but dan bongino
[02:23] was talking about one of the hotels he
[02:24] stayed at in washington dc
[02:26] uh and they they saw protesters at this
[02:28] very expensive hotel i mean
[02:30] do average protesters like this from
[02:32] around the country have that much money
[02:34] probably not to it's definitely being
[02:36] subsidized yeah
[02:37] and also i mean as you mentioned the
[02:38] biden campaign staff bailed out
[02:40] many of these terrorists in minnesota
[02:42] through the minnesota freedom fund
[02:43] and senator harris before she became the
[02:45] vice presidential nominee was promoting
[02:47] it
[02:47] was promoting the fund to help raise
[02:49] money to get these insurrectionists out
[02:51] of jail
[02:52] and so look there's definitely a
[02:53] question here for joe biden which is
[02:55] first he ignored all the riots
[02:57] he just called them peaceful protesters
[02:58] they tried a gaslighting strategy
[03:00] and and it really really i want to say
[03:03] backfired but it's even worse than that
[03:04] it turned into where the american people
[03:06] recognize and realize they were being
[03:07] lied to every single day by the democrat
[03:09] party
[03:09] and so then kind of out of nowhere a
[03:11] shot in the dark don lemon
[03:13] really started this entire conversation
[03:15] around riots in our country
[03:16] where don lemon in his hand off to chris
[03:18] cuomo said
[03:19] chris this is really showing up in the
[03:21] polling and the focus groups not that
[03:22] it's a problem that people's lives are
[03:23] being destroyed or people are being
[03:24] murdered or
[03:25] terrorism's happening in the streets you
[03:26] know it's much more cynical than that
[03:28] it's this is showing up in the polling
[03:29] chris don't you understand
[03:30] this this is resonating and then out of
[03:32] nowhere this kind of this was reposted
[03:34] many many times
[03:35] and all the democrats in the media over
[03:37] this last weekend were forced to
[03:38] actually get a message around the riots
[03:40] where now they're saying it's all
[03:41] trump's fault i said i thought they're
[03:42] peaceful protests you've been calling
[03:43] them peaceful protests for the last
[03:44] couple months and so now middle class
[03:46] voters are saying wait a second you
[03:48] first said they don't exist now they're
[03:49] trump's fault even though it's all
[03:50] democrats
[03:51] and president trump has tried to bring
[03:52] in the national guard to actually solve
[03:54] these issues
[03:54] and that's why i love the president's
[03:55] visit to kenosha because when the
[03:57] president visited kenosha it was a
[03:58] victory lap
[03:59] it was i brought in the national guard
[04:00] we saved innocent uh homes from being
[04:02] destroyed in businesses but also look
[04:04] what happened
[04:04] when joe biden supporters are allowed to
[04:06] destroy your country and so that's
[04:08] i in a lot of different ways this is a
[04:09] losing issue for joe biden if you kind
[04:11] of look at house
[04:12] if someone's going to win an election or
[04:13] not you want to be talking about the
[04:15] issues
[04:15] you want to be talking about joe biden
[04:17] does not want to be talking about arson
[04:19] looting crime or disorder he is on
[04:21] defense
[04:22] president trump is the best offensive
[04:23] player in american political history
[04:25] where he makes the opposition
[04:27] contest for the issues that he is very
[04:28] strong on and one of those being law and
[04:30] order
[04:31] and living quiet and peaceable lives
[04:33] something that joe biden and his
[04:35] rioting base does not believe in want to
