Charlie Kirk Exposes Cornell's Social Justice Roundtable Comparing GOP to ISIS While Silencing Conservative Speech

Categories: News Appearances
November 25, 2015

Charlie Kirk addresses a stunning double standard at Cornell University, where a social justice roundtable displayed images comparing the Republican Party to ISIS and Jihadi John, yet Fox News journalist Jesse Watters was kicked off campus weeks earlier for attempting to interview students. Kirk reveals how 40% of Millennials now support limiting free speech if it offends someone, arguing that college campuses use claims of being "offended" as a tactic to silence conservative viewpoints. The 22-year-old founder of Turning Point USA draws a stark contrast between the 1960s Berkeley Free Speech Movement and today's professors who now fight against the very principles they once championed, implementing what he calls dogmatic indoctrination rather than encouraging free discourse.

Cornell's Disturbing Double Standard on Free Speech

At Cornell University's annual social justice roundtable, disturbing images were displayed that portrayed the Republican Party and GOP elephant in highly offensive ways, including comparisons to Jihadi John assaulting a woman. While some might argue this falls under free speech protections, the incident reveals a troubling double standard on college campuses across America.

Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, points out the hypocrisy: just weeks before this social justice event, Fox News journalist Jesse Watters visited Cornell to interview students and was promptly kicked off campus. Student leadership deemed Fox News a "propaganda machine" and refused to allow basic journalistic interviews. Yet when Cornell hosted a roundtable literally comparing the GOP to ISIS, university officials called it free speech.

The Alarming Statistics on Free Speech Among Millennials

A poll revealed that 40% of Millennials would support limiting free speech if it is offensive or insults someone. While the sample size may have been smaller, the trend is nonetheless alarming for the future of First Amendment protections in America.

Kirk explains what's really happening beneath the surface: "They use this word 'offended.' What's really going on is I disagree with you and therefore you should be silenced. It's not offended. I mean come on. There's this whole idea that well I'm offended by this. No, no, no. It's this generation that we've created that you should be silenced not because I'm offended but because you disagree. And that is scary and that is alarming for a generation to be grown up in that kind of a culture."

From Berkeley Free Speech Movement to Campus Censorship

The irony is not lost on those who remember the 1960s. The Berkeley Free Speech Movement championed the right to express controversial and unpopular opinions on college campuses. The activists who fought for those rights eventually became professors themselves.

Now, those same professors and the academic culture they've created actively fight against the principles they once stood for. Kirk observes: "Those same people became professors and those professors are the ones that are now fighting against everything that they stood for in the 1960s. Why? Because they are so hellbent on pushing their agenda on the Next Generation that they don't want any sort of disagreement, any sort of free discourse. They want dogmatic indoctrination on our youth."

The Rise of Turning Point USA

At just 22 years old, Kirk has built Turning Point USA into a movement organizing thousands of young people on college and high school campuses across the country. Notably, he never officially enrolled in college himself, choosing instead to become a full-time entrepreneur focused on defending conservative values and free speech on campuses.

Kirk's message to parents is clear: "It's scary, alarming, and the parents of this country should be up in arms over what's going on in these schools."

The Cornell incident represents a microcosm of a larger cultural battle playing out on campuses nationwide, where the definition of free speech increasingly depends on whether the speech aligns with progressive ideology. For Kirk and Turning Point USA, the fight to restore genuine intellectual diversity and open debate on college campuses continues.
