Charlie Kirk on President Trump's Executive Order Protecting Free Speech on College Campuses

Categories: Interviews
April 28, 2019

Charlie Kirk, founder and executive director of Turning Point USA, discusses President Trump's executive order protecting free speech on college campuses. Kirk explains how universities have become islands of totalitarianism where conservative voices are routinely silenced, disinvited, or shut down. The executive order threatens federal funding for universities that fail to protect First Amendment rights. Kirk shares his personal experiences being escorted off campuses and how Turning Point USA has grown from a single idea to 1,400 college and high school chapters fighting to teach students that America is the greatest country, the Constitution is the greatest political document, and free enterprise capitalism is the most effective economic system.

President Trump's Executive Order on Campus Free Speech

President Trump issued an executive order protecting free speech on college campuses, a move that Donald Trump Jr. acknowledged was significantly influenced by Charlie Kirk's work. The executive order represents a turning point in addressing the suppression of conservative voices on American campuses.

Kirk explains that college campuses have become islands of totalitarianism where disagreeing with the predominant left-wing viewpoint can result in being disinvited, shut down, or silenced. He has personally experienced this at institutions like DePaul University in Chicago and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

The executive order is straightforward: if a university fails to protect the First Amendment rights of its students, their federal funding could potentially be put in jeopardy. Kirk emphasizes this isn't a conservative or liberal issue, but rather an issue of constitutional freedom.

The Campus Free Speech Crisis

When asked about being shown the door at various campuses, Kirk reveals that universities are careful not to blame viewpoint discrimination directly. Instead, they claim it's too expensive to bring him to campus because of protests. The irony, Kirk points out, is that professors are telling their students to protest him, the administration does nothing to prevent this incitement, and then they blame the high security costs on the very students being encouraged to protest.

Kirk argues that college campuses should be a marketplace of ideas where debate, dialogue, and discussion thrive. Students should hear viewpoints different from their own and leave more mature than when they entered. Currently, that's not the case. Students are isolated and sheltered from any opposition viewpoint.

He highlights the phenomenon of safe spaces on universities across the country where students who hear something they disagree with can retreat to a physical safe space with milk and cookies. While it sounds like a joke, Kirk emphasizes this is something college campuses are actually pushing. Colleges should be about career preparation and hardening students for the real world, not sheltering them from differing opinions.

The Growth of Turning Point USA

When Turning Point USA started in 2012, it was just a dream. Kirk founded the organization when he was 18 years old with no connections, no money, and no idea what he was doing. He took the entrepreneurial path and didn't even go to college himself.

Kirk reflects that only in America could a kid with no money, no connections, and no idea what he was doing risk it all and succeed with a vision and hard work. Over the past six and a half years, the organization has grown from just an idea to 1,400 college and high school chapters across the country.

Turning Point USA's Vision and Mission

The vision of Turning Point USA is to win America's culture war. Kirk explains this means answering fundamental questions about what kind of country America will be. Will it be a country that embraces the Latin phrase e pluribus unum, meaning out of many, one? Or will it be a country of divide and conquer, which is what the American Left is pursuing?

Kirk asks whether America will be a country of victims or victors, a country where people are thankful they live here or angry that they live here. These fundamental questions will determine the outcome of the current culture conversation.

He notes that an entire political party and sector of American culture wants to center the conversation on victims, divide and conquer tactics, and anger about living in America.

Three Core Messages

Kirk shares the three key things Turning Point USA brings to campuses:

  • America is the greatest country ever to exist in the history of the world
  • The Constitution is the greatest political document ever written
  • Free enterprise capitalism is the most moral, proven, and effective economic system ever discovered

Kirk emphasizes these are not political issues. Americans have been given a gift by God to live in this country, but the nation is on a path of losing that because of a lack of appreciation for the fundamental values and the improbability of existing in this country at this time.

Hope for the Millennial Generation

Addressing concerns about millennials embracing socialism and rejecting free speech, Kirk offers optimism. He believes that once students understand what the options are, they're not averse to taking the right path.

The importance of this fight is critical because whatever happens on campus today will happen in Congress tomorrow. The radicals in Congress were trained on college campuses, where they got these negative ideas. The culture battle being fought today will have both short and long-term ramifications for the country.

Kirk's message is clear: the fight for free speech on college campuses isn't just about protecting constitutional rights today, it's about shaping the future leadership and direction of America.

[00:00] President Trump recently issued a

[00:02] much-needed executive order protecting

[00:04] free speech on college campuses Donald

[00:08] Trump jr. acknowledged how much my first

[00:10] guest had to do with that I want you to

[00:12] welcome the founder and the executive

[00:14] director of turning-point USA charlie

[00:17] Kirk

[00:18] [Applause]

[00:22] [Music]

[00:25] so Charlie how big a deal was it that

[00:29] the President issued the executive order

[00:30] about free speech on college campuses it

[00:33] was historic and for those that are not

[00:37] as into the college campus controversies

[00:40] as I am these campuses have become

[00:42] islands a totalitarianism where if you

[00:45] disagree with the predominant left-wing

[00:48] viewpoint on campus you could be

[00:50] disinvited you can be shut up you could

[00:53] be silenced you have been on many many

[00:55] times whether it be DePaul University in

[00:57] Chicago or Cornell University in Ithaca

[01:00] New York

[01:00] and what this executive order did is

[01:02] very simple it's not a conservative or a

[01:04] liberal issue it's an issue of

[01:06] constitutional freedom that if a

[01:08] university fails to protect the First

[01:10] Amendment rights of its students their

[01:12] federal funding could potentially be put

[01:14] in jeopardy when you've been on college

[01:16] campuses you have actually been shouted

[01:19] down you've been disinvited you've been

[01:21] escorted off the campus what was the

[01:23] reason you were given for being shown

[01:26] the door well the universities they

[01:29] they're careful not to blame viewpoint

[01:31] they all values oh it's too expensive to

[01:34] bring him to campus because of all the

[01:35] protests now mind you the professor's

[01:38] are telling their students to go protest

[01:39] me the administration does nothing to

[01:42] prevent this sort of incitement amongst

[01:46] the students and then they blame the

[01:47] high security cost because of the very

[01:48] students that are being told to go

[01:50] protest us but the common denominator is

[01:53] this is that college campuses should be

[01:55] a marketplace of ideas we're gonna have

[01:57] debate and dialogue and discussion where

[01:59] you can hear something that is different

[02:01] than the point of view that you're

[02:02] entering with that college campuses are

[02:04] a place where students shall leave

[02:05] should leave more mature than when they

[02:07] enter and right now that's not the case

[02:09] students are actually isolated there

[02:12] they're sheltered away from any sort of

[02:13] opposition viewpoint their safe spaces

[02:15] for example are common on universities

[02:18] across college campuses and you've had

[02:20] some brilliant commentary on this

[02:21] governor where students if they hear an

[02:24] opinion they might find objectionable

[02:25] quite honestly if they hear something

[02:27] they disagree with they can retreat to a

[02:29] physical safe space where there's milk

[02:31] and cookies it sounds like almost like a

[02:33] joke but this is something that our

[02:34] college campuses are pushing the

[02:36] colleges should be about career

[02:38] preparation and getting students

[02:39] hardened for the real world not

[02:41] sheltering them from differing opinions

[02:43] when turning-point USA started back in

[02:46] 2012 I mean it was just a dream you had

[02:50] now you and Candace Owens and others in

[02:52] turning point you have chapters all over

[02:53] America explain to us the vision of

[02:56] turning-point what is it that you guys

[02:58] are doing on campuses to give people a

[03:01] sense of their freedom and their

[03:03] constitutional rights

[03:04] well thank thank you for the kind words

[03:06] I started this in I was 18 years old

[03:08] with a no connections no money and no

[03:11] idea what I was doing but only in

[03:13] America could a kid with no money no

[03:15] connections and no idea what he was

[03:16] doing risk it all not even go to college

[03:19] be an entrepreneur at heart with with a

[03:21] vision and hard work and succeed only in

[03:23] America is that possible and for the

[03:25] last six and a half years now we've seen

[03:27] this organization grow from just my idea

[03:30] just an idea in my head to now 1,400

[03:32] college and high school absences hundred

[03:34] that's correct is fantastic what a

[03:37] legacy and our vision our vision is to

[03:42] win America's culture work now what does

[03:44] that mean well it's to answer the really

[03:46] big questions what kind of country are

[03:48] we gonna be are we gonna be a country

[03:49] that embraces the Latin phrase a

[03:51] pluribus unum which means out of many

[03:52] one which your beautiful monologue

[03:54] touched on are we gonna be a country

[03:56] that is divide and conquer which is what

[03:58] the American Left is really striving

[04:00] down or are we gonna be a country of

[04:02] victims or victors are we gonna be a

[04:04] country that is thankful that we live

[04:05] here our country that were angry that we

[04:07] live here these are the fundamental

[04:09] questions that will determine the

[04:10] current culture conversation that were

[04:13] and we call a culture war obviously a

[04:14] metaphorical culture war and right now

[04:16] you have an entire political party an

[04:19] entire sector of the American cultural

[04:21] conversation that wants to make us

[04:23] centered on victims divide and conquer

[04:25] and angry that they live in America so

[04:26] what are the key things that you're

[04:27] trying to say to these students three

[04:29] really big things America is the

[04:31] greatest country ever to exist in a

[04:32] history of the world the Constitution

[04:34] thank you

[04:36] can't argue that second thing is the

[04:39] constitution's the greatest political

[04:40] document ever written and the third

[04:42] thing and the third thing is that free

[04:47] enterprise capitalism is the most moral

[04:49] proven and effective economic system

[04:51] ever discovered these are the three big

[04:53] things that we bring the campuses I'll

[04:55] tell you these are not political issues

[04:57] governor we have been given a gift by

[04:58] God to live in this country and as we

[05:01] prayed that we are on a path of losing

[05:04] that because of a lack of appreciation

[05:05] of the fundamental values and the

[05:09] improbability that we're able to exist

[05:10] in this country at this time I love your

[05:12] enthusiasm and even your optimism

[05:15] because a lot of us are looking at

[05:16] college students and particularly the

[05:18] entire millennial generation and we're

[05:19] seeing them say we want socialism you

[05:22] know we don't want free speech but

[05:23] you're giving me a little bit of hope

[05:25] charlie that once they understand what

[05:27] the options are they're not averse to

[05:30] taking the right path not at all and the

[05:33] importance of our fight is is so

[05:35] critical right now because whatever

[05:36] happens on campus today will happen in

[05:38] Congress tomorrow the radicals that

[05:40] might give you unease that you see in

[05:42] Congress they were trained on college

[05:44] campuses and that's where they got these

[05:46] negative ideas and so the culture battle

[05:48] that we're fighting today is gonna have

[05:49] both short and long term ramifications

[05:51] my thanks to Charlie Kirk for helping

[05:54] just fight the battle for free speech

[05:56] against mobs and the thought police and

[05:59] America's campuses if you want to learn

[06:01] more and see how you can help and you
