On their wedding anniversary, she recalled how Charlie couldn't resist finishing Hillsdale online courses even during their disconnected honeymoon, listening to lectures while working out. Erika Kirk delivered the commencement address at Hillsdale College in Michigan, where the institution conferred honorary degrees on both the Turning Point USA CEO and her murdered husband, Charlie Kirk. Speaking to the class of 2026, Erika accepted the honors on behalf of both herself and Charlie in an emotional ceremony.
A Honeymoon Memory on Their Wedding Anniversary
During her address, Erika shared a lighter moment from their marriage, noting that the speech coincided with what would have been their wedding anniversary. She recounted a funny and touching story from their honeymoon that illustrated Charlie's character and dedication to learning.
"When we got married and we went to our honeymoon the next day, we decided for our honeymoon that it would be a disconnected honeymoon, meaning no computers, no cell phones, just being able to pour into each other, plan out what our family life would look like, what type of parents we want to be, what type of spouse we want to be," Erika explained.
The couple had agreed to disconnect completely from technology to focus on each other and plan their future together. However, Charlie's assistant had given him a "bat phone" containing only emergency contact numbers, just in case.
Dr. Arnn's Lectures During the Honeymoon
The humorous moment came when they arrived at the gym on their honeymoon. Erika was on one side of the gym when she noticed Charlie had pulled out the bat phone. Initially thinking he might be playing some classic rock music, which he loved, she soon heard a familiar voice.
"All of a sudden, I hear Dr. Arnn's voice coming from the side of the room," Erika recalled. When she walked over to ask what he was listening to, Charlie's response was apologetic but determined.
"He goes, 'I know.' He was like, 'I I'm almost done.' He's like, 'I I have to finish just a few more lectures from Dr. Arnn. I have a few more certificates I have to get for my online courses at Hillsdale. We're almost there. I can't skip him.'"
Erika's response revealed the supportive nature of their relationship: "Baby, you do what you got to do. I'm here for it." She even found herself learning about Churchill while they both worked out, turning the moment into an unexpected bonding experience.
Charlie's Pride in Hillsdale Education
Erika shared that Charlie's dedication to Hillsdale's educational programs was a consistent pattern throughout his life. Every time he completed a Hillsdale online program, he would screenshot the certificate of completion and share it widely.
"He would send them to me every time. I know he'd sent them to the team as well. I believe he also sent them to you every time he did them," Erika told the Hillsdale audience. "He was very proud of them and and he had every right to be."
The story illustrated not only Charlie's commitment to continuous learning but also his deep connection to Hillsdale College and its educational mission, making the honorary degree a fitting tribute to his memory.
