Erika Kirk Says She Saw God's Mercy in the Moment She Found Charlie's Body
Erika Kirk describes the afternoon of September 10th, when she arrived at a Utah hospital and faced what she calls the unthinkable: looking directly at her husband's body after his death. She recounts the shock, horror, and heartache of that moment, but says something else broke through as well, a detail death couldn't take from her, a single gray hair she'd never told him about, and the faintest smile still on his lips. She reads both as a sign of God's mercy in the middle of tragedy, insisting Charlie felt no pain, no fear, and no agony, and that nothing could have changed the outcome even if someone had been standing right beside him. She closes with the image of Charlie doing exactly what he loved, on a college campus, before it happened. It's a raw, deeply personal account of grief searching for and finding meaning in a single terrible afternoon.
Erika Kirk said that God's love was revealed to her on the very day her husband was murdered. 'On the afternoon of September 10th, I arrived at a Utah hospital to do the unthinkable, to look directly at my husband's body,' she said. 'I saw the wound that ended his life. I felt everything you would expect to feel. I felt shock. I felt horror and a level of heartache that I didn't even know existed.'
A Single Gray Hair and the Faintest Smile
Despite that, Erika said something else came through in that moment, something even death couldn't take from the man she loved. She said she noticed a single gray hair on his head that she had never told him about, adding, 'Baby, I'm telling you now.' She also said she saw the faintest smile on his lips, and that it told her something important.
'Charlie Didn't Suffer'
Erika said she believes what she saw revealed God's mercy in the middle of tragedy. She said it showed her that Charlie didn't suffer, and that even if someone had been standing right there with him, nothing could have been done differently. There was no pain, she said, no fear, no agony.
'He Blinked, and Saw His Savior in Paradise'
She closed by describing Charlie in his final moments as doing exactly what he loved, on a college campus, engaging with the gospel. He blinked, she said, and saw his Savior in paradise.
