Josh Hammer on Turning Point USA's Future After Charlie Kirk and the Threats It Faces

Josh Hammer addresses concerns about Turning Point USA's survival following Charlie Kirk's passing and the organization's dramatic expansion from a few thousand chapters to over 50,000. He discusses the challenges facing the organization, including attempts to hijack its founding principles and the spread of conspiracy theories by Candace Owens and others. Hammer explains why staying true to Charlie Kirk's vision is essential for the organization's long-term success, despite acknowledging risks from both external attacks and internal forces attempting to steer it in a different direction.

The Risk Facing Turning Point USA

When asked about the risks facing Turning Point USA as an organization so intimately affiliated with Charlie Kirk, Josh Hammer acknowledged the inherent challenges. "There's always a risk," Hammer stated. "Every time you have an organization that is intimately affiliated with an individual and that individual is no longer there, there's certainly always a risk."

However, Hammer believes the organization has reached a critical mass that provides some security, at least in the near term. "I think Turning Point to this point, Erin, is probably too big to fail or at least too big to fail in the short to midterm," he explained.

Explosive Growth Following Charlie Kirk's Death

Hammer pointed to the remarkable expansion of Turning Point USA chapters following Kirk's passing as evidence of the organization's strength. The numbers he cited are staggering. "Prior to Charlie's horrific assassination I think the total number of Turning Point USA chapters was I think 2,000 or less, 3,000 something like that. The number now is literally like 50 to 60,000," Hammer revealed.

This explosion of interest has been accompanied by significant financial support. "There's been a shocking expansion, a shocking interest here, and they've had a lot of donations coming in as well. So in the short to midterm, I think they're going to be okay. Completely fine," he said.

The Battle for Turning Point's Principles

While optimistic about the immediate future, Hammer expressed concern about longer-term challenges. "In the mid to long term, any organization can only sustain itself, especially as a not for profit, if you have a set of principles that you are dedicated towards pursuing," he explained.

Hammer identified a deliberate effort by some to hijack the organization and alter its founding principles. "There are a lot of folks now that seem to me to be interested in trying to hijack Turning Point USA and to alter the principles that Charlie Kirk founded it on," he said. "A lot of this kind of post Charlie Kirk assassination discussion is actually really getting at this. A lot of it is divide back. A lot of it is just pure gutter anti-semitism. But part of it is a deliberate attempt to try to turn this extraordinarily powerful vehicle in American politics in a very different direction than what it had been there."

He emphasized the stakes: "It is incredibly important that those forces not win."

Why Hammer Has Been Outspoken

Hammer explained his decision to speak out forcefully over the past month about Charlie Kirk, his legacy, and the conspiracy theories swirling around his death. "That's actually part of the reason why I've been so outspoken over the past month, give or take, about Charlie, about his legacy, about my friendship with him, pushing back on the crazies," he said.

He detailed some of the false narratives being promoted: "People have said that he was turning on Israel. Then Candace said there was an intervention at this retreat in the Hamptons. I was at that retreat. It didn't happen. Obviously, the latest insanity from Candace this past week about—I can't even say—my alleged complicity in the murder."

Hammer's motivation extends beyond personal defense. "The reason I've been so outspoken is not just on a personal level because it is imperative that Turning Point USA stay the course and stay true to what its founder Charlie Kirk wanted there."

Erika Kirk's Impossible Position

When asked whether Erika Kirk needs to publicly clarify Charlie's position on Israel given how the issue has been weaponized against the organization, Hammer was careful and compassionate in his response.

"I don't think it's my role to say that Erika Kirk should do or should not do anything at this moment. This is a woman who just lost the love of her life. She is a grieving widow with young children. And I believe it's a matter of public record that her mother is also in ailing health. So she's got a lot going on to put it mildly," Hammer said.

However, he did suggest that some form of organizational response would be helpful. "I do think it would be helpful. I will say I think it would be helpful if Erika and Turning Point as an organization released some sort of statement saying that Candace Owens has no idea what she's talking about, that Josh Hammer was not involved, that Turning Point was not involved, that it was not an inside job, that my friend Andrew Kolvet, the executive producer of the Charlie Kirk show, who's been the main host of the show since Charlie was killed—Andrew's name has been implicated as well by Candace and others there."

The Proof Will Be in the Pudding

Hammer emphasized that time will reveal whether Turning Point USA can maintain its founder's vision. "Ultimately the proof will be in the pudding and ultimately we will find out sooner rather than later the extent to which Turning Point USA continues in Charlie's footsteps versus goes down some other path," he said.

While cautiously optimistic—"I think it's going to be okay"—Hammer acknowledged serious threats, including from unexpected quarters. "There are a lot of forces, some very powerful ones, including some folks within, some wolves in the hen house such as Tucker Carlson who are very much trying to kind of take this in an unfortunate direction."

His assessment of the organization's future success hinges on one factor: "I think that their success will be defined by their willingness and their ability to stay true to their founder's vision."
