American Milk and Honey: Antisemitism, the Promise of Deuteronomy, and the True Israel of God

The Jews are our prodigal older brother. When they come home, it will be glory for the world. The question is how we should regard them in the meantime, and too many Christians have gotten that badly wrong. On one side stands the dispensationalist, pinning his prophetic hopes to a rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem. On the other stands the antisemite, baptizing his envy in theological language and calling it discernment. Douglas Wilson argues that neither option reflects biblical faithfulness. In American Milk and Honey, he calls Christians to something rarer and harder: clear thinking. That means working through a thorough Reformed theology of the Jews and the Church, engaging honestly with Christian-Jewish relations, the Middle East, and the history of the Holocaust, and arriving at conclusions rooted in Scripture rather than cultural anxiety or conspiratorial fantasy. The path forward, Wilson contends, runs through Christendom, and the key to Christendom is the repentance of American Christians, including repentance from the envy that feeds antisemitism. It is the promised glory that awaits, and the church has a role to play in bringing it about.
