The Taylor Swift Problem: Why Young Women Are Drifting Left and What Conservatism Must Do About It
A stark gender divide is emerging in politics, with young men returning to conservatism while young women drift further left. The analysis points to cultural icons like Taylor Swift, who embodies mainstream feminism's messaging of career-first ambitions and delayed family formation. The left has successfully tailored political messaging to women's nurturing and compassionate nature, framing issues through these lenses. To win back young women, conservatism must offer a compelling vision of womanhood that values motherhood, family, and the unique capabilities women possess. The current feminist narrative, which downplays motherhood and promotes antagonism toward men, leaves young women unprepared for biological realities and the trade-offs involved in delaying family formation until their late thirties.
A significant political shift is underway, with young men returning to conservatism and the right while young women are drifting further left. This bifurcation is particularly pronounced in Australia, where the gap between young men and women has grown enormous. Understanding this divide requires examining who influences young women and what messages resonate with them.
Taylor Swift as a Cultural Force
The most potent cultural influence on young women today is likely Taylor Swift. While it may sound surprising, her impact cannot be overstated. Swift, now in her late thirties and only recently engaged, represents a particular trajectory that many young women view as aspirational. Her series of turbulent relationships with men has formed the basis of an emotional narrative she broadcasts widely through her music.
Swift embodies what mainstream feminism has come to mean for many women: prioritizing career and personal ambitions through your twenties and into your thirties before settling down with a partner who meets your established lifestyle requirements. This approach often culminates in a glamorous wedding followed perhaps by one or two children. There is a reason she is so idolized among young women—she represents their own aspirations and the path they have been told will lead to fulfillment.
How the Left Tailored Messaging to Women
The left has been remarkably successful in understanding the characteristics of women and crafting political messaging that speaks directly to those traits. Women tend to be more nurturing, more compassionate, and more agreeable. The left has pitched their entire message through these lenses.
Political messaging from the left consistently focuses on women and children in conflict zones like Gaza, emphasizes showing compassion to the poor, and promotes a non-divisive ethos of "you do you" and "live your own truth." This approach resonates deeply with the natural inclinations many women possess, making left-wing politics feel like the compassionate, caring choice.
The Conservative Challenge: Defining Great Womanhood
If the right wants to make inroads with young women, it must provide them with a compelling vision of what it actually means to be a great woman. Much of conservative messaging has been pitched toward young men, and that effort has succeeded—young men have returned to the right. But young women have not followed, which means conservatism must answer a fundamental question: what does it mean to be a strong woman?
The answer involves returning to valuing family and motherhood, and recognizing the unique capabilities women possess. While women can certainly pursue careers and other ambitions, they also possess something irreplaceable: the ability to bring life into the world. Humanity would not exist without women. Men cannot do this. This capacity is incredible, yet much of the toxic feminism sold to women treats motherhood as something to avoid or delay indefinitely.
The Biological Reality Young Women Aren't Hearing
Conservatism must be honest with young women about biological realities and the trade-offs involved in their choices. By the time women reach their late thirties, like Taylor Swift, having children becomes significantly more difficult. This matters because the desire for children is an innate desire for many women.
The current cultural messaging is dishonest about these trade-offs. Young women are told they can have it all on their own timeline, but the biological clock operates independently of career ambitions and personal preferences. Toxic feminism that promotes antagonism toward men and glorifies indefinite independence is not a recipe for happiness—it is a recipe for disaster.
Valuing What Makes Women Unique
The path forward requires conservatism to start valuing families, valuing motherhood, and celebrating the unique things women can do. This does not mean women cannot have careers or pursue other goals, but it does mean acknowledging that motherhood is not something to be dismissed or treated as a burden. It is a profound capability that deserves recognition and support.
Only by offering this honest, compelling vision of womanhood can conservatism begin to close the gender gap and speak meaningfully to young women who have been fed a narrative that ultimately leaves them unfulfilled and unprepared for the realities they will face.
