Utah Officials Release New Video and Images of Charlie Kirk's Shooter as Manhunt Continues
Utah officials hold a breaking news conference roughly a day after Charlie Kirk's assassination at Utah Valley University, releasing new video showing the moment the gunman escaped by jumping off a campus building, along with enhanced photos highlighting distinctive clothing, including a black t-shirt with an American flag and eagle, a hat with a triangle logo, sunglasses, and Converse sneakers with white soles. Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bo Mason walks through the footage in detail, describing how investigators tracked the suspect's movements from the rooftop to a wooded area where a bolt-action rifle was recovered. Governor Spencer Cox reveals that the FBI has received more than 7,000 tips, the largest digital tip volume since the Boston Marathon bombing, and confirms prosecutors are preparing to pursue the death penalty once a suspect is caught. Cox also warns the public about foreign disinformation bots seeking to incite further violence, while announcing a $100,000 reward and tip line for anyone with information.
Chris Stewart opens a breaking news edition of On the Case with newly released video showing the moment the gunman who killed Charlie Kirk escaped by jumping off a building on the Utah Valley University campus, roughly 200 yards from where Kirk was speaking. Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck during the question-and-answer portion of a Turning Point USA event and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Distinctive Clothing: The Flag Shirt, the Triangle Hat, and the Converse Shoes
Newly enhanced photos show the suspect wearing a black t-shirt featuring an American flag and an eagle, a hat with a triangle logo, sunglasses, a backpack, blue jeans, and Converse sneakers with white soles. Authorities emphasized these specific details in hopes the public could help identify him.
Commissioner Bo Mason Walks Through the Footage
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bo Mason narrated the video at the press conference.
"If you look up to the top left, you'll see the building where the shooter was proned out in the top left corner... he's going to climb off the edge and then drop down to the ground. As he did that, he left some palm impressions," Mason said, noting investigators also recovered a shoe imprint matching the Converse sneakers and were collecting DNA from smudges left on the building.
Tracking the Suspect From Arrival to Escape
Officials said the shooter arrived on campus just before noon, with the fatal shot fired roughly half an hour later from the rooftop. After dropping to the ground, the suspect moved across a grass area near a parking lot, crossed a street, and entered a wooded area, the same path investigators followed using video evidence to locate the firearm.
The Recovered Rifle
Authorities said they believe they have recovered the weapon used in the attack, a high-powered bolt-action rifle left in the wooded area, which was sent to the FBI's crime lab for analysis. It remains unclear whether the weapon was registered to anyone.
Governor Cox: Thousands of Tips Pouring In
Governor Spencer Cox said the public response to the investigation has been significant.
"We've received more than 7,000 leads and tips... the FBI hasn't received this many digital media tips from the public since the Boston Marathon bombing" in 2013, Cox said, adding that nearly 200 interviews have been completed with support from 20 federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.
A Reward and a Tip Line
The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the shooter's identification and arrest. Tips can be submitted through fbi.gov/utahvalleyshooting, by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI, or at tips.fbi.gov.
Cox Warns About Disinformation From Foreign Bots
Cox urged the public to be cautious about misinformation circulating online.
"What we're seeing is our adversaries want violence. We have bots from Russia, China, all over the world that are trying to instill disinformation and encourage violence," Cox said, encouraging people to step away from social media and spend time with family instead. "We desperately need some healing."
The Death Penalty in Utah
Cox confirmed that prosecutors are preparing the legal groundwork to pursue the death penalty once a suspect is in custody.
"We are going to catch this person," Cox said. "We've been working with our attorneys, getting everything that we need, affidavit ready, so that we can pursue the death penalty in this case... and that will happen here in the state of Utah."
