Utah Prosecutors Will Seek the Death Penalty Against Tyler Robinson for Charlie Kirk's Killing
Utah authorities have filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the September 10th shooting of Charlie Kirk at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Prosecutors laid out charges including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child, while detailing DNA evidence, surveillance footage, and inscribed bullets allegedly tying Robinson to a rooftop sniper position. Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray addressed reporters directly to explain his decision, while authorities confirmed the case will continue toward a preliminary hearing and eventual trial as investigators continue examining whether anyone else played a role and whether online radicalization contributed to the attack.
Death Penalty Sought in Charlie Kirk Assassination Case
Authorities in Utah have filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the September 10th shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in Orem.
"I am filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty. I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently," Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray said during a press conference, stressing that Robinson is presumed innocent and that his decision was made independent of political pressure.
The Charges Against Tyler Robinson
Robinson faces multiple charges in connection with the shooting:
Aggravated murder
Felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury
Obstruction of justice
Witness tampering
Committing a violent offense in the presence of a child
Evidence Presented by Prosecutors
Prosecutors said Robinson targeted Kirk because of his political views, firing from a rooftop sniper position while children were present in the crowd. They cited DNA evidence linking Robinson to the rifle and surveillance footage capturing him accessing the sniper site. Investigators also pointed to inscriptions on the bullets and text messages sent to his roommate that they say show clear intent, including the message, "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it."
Robinson's Surrender and Alleged Confession
Kirk was shot while speaking at a Turning Point USA event, triggering a 33-hour manhunt. Robinson surrendered the following day alongside his parents at the Washington County Sheriff's Office and is currently being held without bail. He allegedly later confessed to his parents, citing his belief that Kirk was spreading too much hate as his motive.
What Happens Next
Robinson made his first court appearance, with the case set to proceed to a preliminary hearing, followed by arraignment and eventually trial. Authorities said they have not ruled out the involvement of other individuals, and federal charges remain under review. Investigators are also continuing to examine whether online radicalization played a role in the attack.
