Why Socialism Fails and Capitalism Thrives: Lessons from Florida, Tennessee, and Arizona Business Owners

Business owners and state leaders from Florida, Tennessee, and Arizona expose the harsh realities of socialism versus capitalism. From mobile home park operators to dairy farmers turned state legislators, these Americans share firsthand insights into why freedom and free markets create prosperity while socialist policies lead to misery. They address why young Americans are drawn to socialism's promises, what those promises actually deliver, and how states embracing liberty are thriving while socialist nations crumble. Through real-world examples and personal experiences, they make the case for why America must reject socialism and preserve the freedom that made it exceptional.

The Socialism Temptation Facing Young Americans

The world feels more complicated than ever. Across college campuses and social media feeds, young Americans hear a seductive message: socialism is the answer to inequality, poverty, and corporate greed. They're told that true equality requires dismantling capitalism's oppressive history and ushering in a promised utopia. But there are two sides to every story.

Stories from Venezuela reveal people eating trash to survive. Reports from Cuba describe prison as the inevitable consequence for speaking freely, with rigged elections ensuring dictators remain in power at democracy's demise. Accounts from the Soviet Union tell of people robbed of their voice. If socialism is so great, wouldn't any place that rejects it be in ruins? The promise of a perfect society deserves examination against reality.

Florida: Where Freedom and Business Flourish

Florida has rapidly gained a reputation as one of America's freest places. From sandy beaches to the nation's oldest city and launch pads to space, this unique state boasts liberty-loving people who fight hard for the land they love.

Ed Zeeman, chairman of Zeeman Homes and Neighborhoods, operates approximately 50 mobile home parks and RV parks throughout mainly the eastern half of the country. His experience navigating COVID-19 regulations in Florida versus other states provides insight into how political climate affects business.

When asked whether his family would have started their business in a blue state or conservative area like Florida, Zeeman's answer is unequivocal: "Absolutely in Florida. We choose not to do any more business in Illinois."

What Would Happen If Socialists Ran American Businesses

Zeeman's organization had a joke: what if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ran their property? The thought experiment reveals socialism's fundamental flaws. Take two specific policies she would probably implement.

First, pay everybody the same because everyone wants to be treated equally according to socialism. The young employee starting out would be thrilled getting $50,000. But the general manager who's been there 27 years and makes much more would probably leave immediately. Zeeman would have to replace the experienced GM with somebody making $50,000, probably inexperienced, not knowing how to deal with customers or handle maintenance issues.

What would happen to the property? It would probably be maintained much less nicely. Customers would not be happy. It would slowly start to degenerate. Within three years of instituting socialist policies, the place would be a slum nobody would want to visit. But AOC would probably have the nicest lot in the property. This is the way socialism works, Zeeman explains. It would be an absolute nightmare.

Capitalism Is Freedom, Socialism Is Prison

Working in the heart of what capitalism is about every day gives Zeeman perspective on what he wishes young Americans knew about capitalism versus what they learn on college campuses.

"Capitalism is freedom, socialism is prison. It's as simple as that," Zeeman states. "You have the freedom with capitalism to succeed. You also have a good chance of failing, but that's just life. I would rather have unequal blessing than shared misery, and that's what socialism is. Everybody's miserable except for the very few government officials that get to live like kings and control what the populace does and dictate every portion of their life. To me it's slavery versus freedom. It's as simple as that."

Florida is home to countless Patriots who long for the American dream. Just 90 miles away is the socialist nation of Cuba, where everyone flees to get to America. Floridians understand that socialism fails. They aren't afraid to embrace liberty over tyranny and they're willing to share it with the world.

Tennessee: America at Its Best

Tennessee, the Volunteer State, is rooted in love of country. Founded upon and continuing to live by the motto "America at its best," Tennesseans are grounded in American history, celebrating inspiring figures, heroic moments, and great tragedies of the past while continuing to drive the nation forward.

From the Great Smoky Mountains to downtown Nashville, there's something beautifully unique about this land of liberty. Kylie Jean Tannehill moved to Franklin, Tennessee from the West Coast and describes Nashville as a creative city where people come to pursue their dreams. "I love the state of Tennessee. There's no other place I'd rather be," she says.

Why Millennials Are Attracted to Socialism

As a millennial, Tannehill has perspective on why the vast majority of her generation embraces socialism as the next big thing and what America should be progressing toward.

"I think so many young Americans are actually attracted to the idea of free, and they think that with socialism it becomes free things for them. They think that their finances are going to be handed to them. They're relying on government. But what they don't realize is nothing is actually ever free. I honestly think that they don't actually know what they're advocating for at all," Tannehill explains.

Making Young Socialists Feel the Pain

How do freedom-loving Americans counter socialist propaganda? How can they approach their peers and explain what socialism would actually lead to versus what they're being told on college campuses?

Tannehill offers a direct approach: "I think the number one thing, if somebody is leaning to advocate socialism, then they're going to have to start paying for other people's things. I think they need to actually feel the pain of it themselves. Literally, if somebody was really into socialism and they started paying for everybody else's things, no strings attached, they'd understand."

The Heart of Patriotism

What does Tannehill wish young socialists in places like California and Washington, where she previously lived, could know about Tennessee and what's working there?

"I wish that young people who live in California and Washington knew the heart of patriotism. I wish they knew that there's actually a joy and a pride that comes with loving your country. There's no other place like the United States of America. There isn't a place where you can literally build an American dream. You can come with nothing, and if you have hard work and drive and purpose and vision in front of you, you can actually make something happen."

America is the most diverse nation in the world. There's a reason people are drawn to America: the life and quality of life you can have here. Tannehill's heart is that she wishes people had pride for their nation.

Governor Bill Lee has reminded America that Tennessee is open for business. Even during expected lockdowns, this state thrives because of private industry and the freedom each resident has to make their own choices and develop their own thriving businesses.

Arizona: The Spirit of the Wild American West

Arizona is a state that still embodies the spirit of the wild American West. The five C's run Arizona's mostly agricultural economy: copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate. From the depths of the Grand Canyon to snow-capped mountain peaks, Arizona is a place of immense natural beauty attracting new residents from all over the world.

Phoenix is the fastest growing city in America and has quickly become the nation's fifth largest city by population. As Arizona grows, it remains true to its diverse roots of tribal nations, business leaders, and cowboys alike.

From Dairy Farmer to State Senator

Sena Kerr is a wife, grandmother, mother, dairy farmer, and state legislator serving in the Arizona state senate. Her career transformation from working in agriculture to serving in the state senate came from a realization: "We need more elected officials on the other side of that desk that really understand what it means to own a business, to be in agriculture, that we know firsthand what the challenges are and can be at the table to find solutions."

Why Socialism Is Specifically Bad for Arizona and America

Kerr explains what makes socialism so damaging: "Socialism stifles those personal dreams and goals that we have as people. Clearly it doesn't work, and no matter what form it takes, people have tried to say, 'Well, this type of socialism will work,' or 'This type...' It doesn't. When government grows, it sucks the life out of liberty and prosperity. It just doesn't work."

Freedom Allows Human Potential to Flourish

Why does Kerr believe it's so important to preserve freedom and cast out socialism for the next generation?

"Freedom is everything. Freedom allows us to utilize and reach our greatest potential, our God-given potential as humanity, and allows us to dream big dreams, to set goals, to be who and what we want to be," Kerr states.

Even as thousands of Americans migrate to Arizona, the state has consistently remained true to its unique identity. Arizona is leading the way for business and culture while doing so with intentional effort to keep big government out of its citizens' lives.

America Rejects Socialism's False Promises

Despite socialism's alluring promises, Americans see the dystopian reality it tries to hide. America was and remains the land of the free, a land of hope and fortune. America will always stand for liberty over false security, opportunity over outcome, and democracy over dictatorships.

American freedom will prevail. Americans reject socialism's enticing deception because they know the truth. Socialism is not the answer to human struggles. It is not the utopia it claims to be. While socialism continues to fight to change American society, freedom-loving Americans aren't done fighting back either.

Dear socialism: no thank you.
