Air Traffic Control: DEI Debates and the Potomac Crash

Showing 7 Air Traffic Control videos from Charlie Kirk's video collection.

Air traffic control entered Charlie Kirk's DEI debates directly when he cited relaxed hiring standards for air traffic controllers, alongside pilots and college admissions, as evidence that diversity quotas come at the expense of qualification standards across safety-critical professions. That argument gained new urgency after a January 2025 collision over the Potomac River between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter killed all 64 people aboard the plane and three soldiers aboard the helicopter — a crash Charlie Kirk witnessed the emergency response to from a nearby hotel after the impact woke his son.

Former Army helicopter pilot Amber Smith, drawing on nearly eight years and 1,500 flight hours of experience, analyzed released audio and video from the crash and argued it supported concerns she raises in her book about diversity policies degrading military and aviation readiness. Separate campus debates over affirmative action extend this same argument to air traffic controller hiring specifically, with Kirk citing declining standards in the field as one example among several, including Harvard admissions data and corporate hiring practices, that he argues demonstrate diversity criteria overriding merit-based selection in critical safety roles.
