Why Kirk Says America Has Neither Single-Payer Nor Free Markets

Showing 3 Healthcare Costs videos from Charlie Kirk's video collection.

Healthcare costs in America became Charlie Kirk's case study for arguing that the country doesn't actually have the free market system critics of the system claim, while also lacking a functioning single-payer alternative worth copying. Kirk argued the two most common claims about American healthcare are both myths: the country has never tried single-payer, and the current system is genuinely free market. He pointed to Medicaid as one existing government-run coverage program he said delivers notably low-quality care, and to the Veterans Administration as a fully government-controlled system, doctors, facilities, and pricing included, that spends heavily on administrative overhead, more than fifty percent of its budget by his estimate, compared to a private hospital system like the Cleveland Clinic, which he said would be shut down for spending anywhere close to that share on administration. He argued the actual barriers to a real free market, an inability to buy insurance across state lines and government-set quotas on the number of doctors trained, get ignored in favor of blaming market failure for problems government restrictions caused directly. Tim Murtaugh extended the cost argument into pharmaceutical pricing, describing what he called Biden-era drug pricing policy as a penalty on pill-based treatments specifically that he said cost Americans a combined 116 million years of life by discouraging the development of new medications, framing it as one more example of policy intended to lower costs actually working against patients instead.
