Historian Jason Edwards recounted that William McKinley, the 25th president, could well have been the fourth face carved into Mount Rushmore alongside Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln had he not been assassinated in 1901, elevating Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency and to the mountain instead. Edwards argues McKinley's Civil War heroism, sound monetary policy, and expansion of America's global standing through the Spanish-American War have been unfairly overshadowed by that twist of history.
