A 3D Reconstruction Documentary Walks Through the Timeline of Charlie Kirk's Assassination at UVU

This documentary-style reconstruction walks through the timeline of Charlie Kirk's assassination on September 10th, 2025, beginning with the founding of Turning Point USA in 2012 after donor Bill Montgomery noticed an 18-year-old Kirk drawing crowds at a campus speech, through the organization's growth via events like Campus Clash with Candace Owens and a 2024 tour with Vivek Ramaswamy. It then details the shooting itself at the Sorenson Center courtyard at Utah Valley University, the first stop on Kirk's American Comeback Tour, using phone footage and eyewitness audio to trace the moment of the shot, the identification of a shooter on the roof of the Losi Center roughly 100 to 120 meters away, and Kirk's transport to Timpanogos Regional Hospital. It also covers the confusion around the initial detention of George Zinn, who was later charged with obstruction rather than the shooting itself, statements from President Trump, JD Vance, Governor Spencer Cox, and Governor Gavin Newsom.

The Origins of Turning Point USA

The documentary opens by tracing Charlie Kirk's political career back to age 18, when donor Bill Montgomery noticed that young people were paying attention to Kirk at a campus speech in a way they weren't to other conservative speakers. A month later, in September 2012, the two launched Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting conservative values among high school and college students by challenging what Kirk described as falsehoods in educational materials.

From a Small Nonprofit to a National Platform

The organization grows steadily, organizing conferences and recruiting thousands of new student members. Kirk becomes a fixture in conservative political circles, speaking at the 2016 Republican National Convention and aligning Turning Point USA closely with the MAGA movement following Donald Trump's nomination. Kirk builds a media presence around college campus debates, which generate millions of views, leading to tours including 2018's Campus Clash with Candace Owens and a 2024 college tour featuring Vivek Ramaswamy.

The American Comeback Tour Begins

On September 10th, 2025, Kirk launches the American Comeback Tour, a new series of campus events built around his signature Prove Me Wrong format, in which attendees are invited to debate him directly at a table. The first stop on the tour is the Sorenson Center courtyard at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

The Shooting

Approximately 20 minutes into the event, an audience member asks Kirk a question about transgender mass shooters, and the exchange is interrupted by a loud bang. Phone footage shows Kirk's head jerking backward immediately afterward, followed by significant bleeding from his neck. Audience members are seen instinctively looking in one direction before crouching down and scattering. Security personnel and police officers move quickly to shield Kirk and transport him toward nearby vehicles.

Identifying the Shooter's Position

Phone recordings later shared online help identify a figure on the roof of the Losi Center, a building initially estimated at roughly 200 yards from Kirk's position. Based on additional footage, the shooter's position is later estimated more precisely at 100 to 120 meters away, lying in a prone position with a clear line of sight before retreating from the rooftop after the shot.

Transport and Initial Statements

Kirk is carried to a police vehicle parked behind the speaking tent and transported to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, with initial reports describing his condition as critical. Utah Valley University spokeswoman Ellen Treanor states that a suspect is in custody and is not a student. President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and other political figures issue statements condemning the violence. FBI Director Kash Patel announces on social media that a person of interest is in custody.

Confusion Over the Initial Suspect

Hours later, these early statements are walked back. Governor Cox clarifies that George Zinn, the individual initially detained, was not the shooter and is instead charged with obstruction of justice. A second individual is also arrested and later released, with authorities stating the investigation remains ongoing.

Confirmation of Kirk's Death

At approximately 2:40 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time, Charlie Kirk's death is confirmed, with President Trump announcing it on Truth Social and expressing grief and anger over what he calls a heinous assassination. Kirk is survived by his wife, daughter, and son, with his cause of death confirmed as a gunshot wound to the neck. As of the time of this account on September 11th, no further suspects had been taken into custody. President Trump orders American flags lowered to half-staff nationwide through Sunday evening.
