Candace Owens Confronts Congressman Ted Lieu Over Deceptively Edited Hitler Clip During Congressional Hearing Testimony
Candace Owens was selected by Republicans as a witness in a congressional hearing, where congressman Ted Lieu played a selectively edited clip of her discussing Hitler and nationalism. Owens forcefully defended herself, accusing the congressman of dishonestly extracting portions of her statement to misrepresent her views. She clarified that her original comment was arguing Hitler should not be characterized as a nationalist because he was a homicidal maniac who killed his own people, contrary to what true nationalism represents. Owens condemned the manipulation as similar to tactics used against Donald Trump and noted the irony of the attack given her work for an organization run by an Orthodox Jew and her attendance at the Jerusalem embassy opening.
In a congressional hearing where the minority party has the right to select its own witnesses, Republicans chose Candace Owens to testify. The selection set the stage for a contentious exchange that would highlight concerns about media manipulation and political tactics.
The Edited Clip Presentation
During the hearing, a congressman played a 30-second clip of Owens discussing Adolf Hitler and nationalism. In the extracted portion, Owens stated: "I actually don't have any problems at all with leaders that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I look, what I don't want. So when you think about whenever we say nationalism, the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler. You know, he was a National Socialist. But if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, okay fine. The problem is that he wanted, he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German."
Owens' Forceful Defense
When given the opportunity to respond, Owens immediately went on the offensive, challenging the integrity of how the clip was presented. She accused the congressman of assuming "black people are stupid and will not pursue the full clip in its entirety," stating he "purposely presented an extracted clip." This comment prompted the committee chair to intervene, suspending the proceedings momentarily to remind Owens that it is not proper to refer disparagingly to a member of the committee.
Clarifying the Full Context
After the procedural interruption, Owens continued her defense, explaining that the congressman was "assuming that black people will not go pursue the full clip and he purposefully extracted, he cut off and you didn't hear the question that was asked of me." She emphasized that the congressman was "trying to present as if I was launching a defense of Hitler in Germany when in fact the question that was asked of me was pertaining to whether or not I believed that Hitler was a, whether or not I believed in nationalism and that nationalism was bad."
Owens clarified her actual position: "When I responded to was that I do not believe that we should be characterizing Hitler as a nationalist. He was a homicidal psychopathic maniac that killed his own people. A nationalist would not kill their own people. That is exactly what I was referring to in the clip."
Accusations of Dishonest Tactics
Owens condemned the selective editing as a deliberate attempt at deception, stating the congressman "purposely wanted to give you a cut-off similar to what they do to Donald Trump to create a different narrative." She characterized the tactic as "unbelievably dishonest" and expressed concern that he "did not allow me to respond to it, which is worrisome and tells you a lot about where people are today in terms of trying to drum up narratives."
Personal Defense Against Antisemitism Implications
Owens concluded her response by defending herself against any implied antisemitism, noting that she works "for Prager University which is run by an Orthodox Jew." She pointed out that while "a single Democrat showed up to the embassy opening in Jerusalem," she personally "sat on a plane for 18 hours to make sure that I was there." Owens stated she was "deeply offended by the insinuation of revealing that clip without the question that was asked of me."
