Charlie Kirk and Luke Barnett on The Rise of the Citizen and How Prayer and Fasting Can Save America

Charlie Kirk joins Pastor Luke Barnett at Dream City Church to reflect on the transformation of 2021, from despair to the rise of an unprecedented citizen movement. Kirk argues that parents, churches, and local communities reclaimed their power by showing up to school boards, fasting, and refusing to surrender to an overreaching regime. Barnett shares his vision for the church's role in saving the nation, emphasizing prayer, fasting, and the importance of standing firm on biblical truth. Together, they issue a call to action for Christians to become engaged citizens and embrace their God-given authority.

The Great Inversion of 2021

Charlie Kirk opened the evening by reflecting on the tumultuous year that was 2021. He acknowledged that for many Americans, the year felt like a horror show—marked by chaos, anger, and a sense of helplessness as they watched the nation they loved seemingly unravel. Kirk noted that the primary source of frustration was the feeling that citizens had no power to change what was happening at the federal level.

However, Kirk argued that something profound shifted midway through the year. What began as a period of despair transformed into what he called "the great inversion"—a moment when everyday Americans, especially parents, began to reclaim their power. Moms and dads across the country started showing up to school board meetings, challenging mandates, and demanding accountability. This movement, Kirk said, was a pressure release valve for years of pent-up frustration over lockdowns, mask mandates, vaccine requirements, and the teaching of Critical Race Theory.

Kirk described this as the rise of the citizen—a movement where regular people refused to be treated as subjects and instead asserted their God-given authority as co-owners of the national project. He emphasized that this shift was not about political parties or individual politicians, but about empowering citizens to understand their biblical responsibility to be informed and engaged.

The Power of Local Action

One of the key themes Kirk highlighted was the importance of focusing on local issues. He explained that when citizens feel overwhelmed by what's happening in Washington, D.C., they often disengage. But when they realize they can make a difference in their own communities—at school boards, city councils, and local churches—they become energized and motivated.

Kirk pointed out that 2021 saw a rebirth of family-focused politics, with parents taking the lead in fighting for their children's education and well-being. He also praised Dream City Church for its role in Arizona, noting that the church has been a beacon of hope and action in the community. Kirk emphasized that the church has always been the institution that catches America and brings it back into alignment during times of crisis.

He argued that the founding fathers designed the country to prioritize local governance over federal control. The states created the federal government, not the other way around. Kirk believes that the current tension between the ruling class and everyday citizens is a sign that the nation is returning to its roots—where individuals take responsibility for their local communities rather than relying on distant bureaucrats.

The Role of Fasting and Prayer

Pastor Luke Barnett then took the stage to discuss the power of prayer and fasting. He shared the story of Shamgar from the Book of Judges—a man who saved a nation by starting where he was and using what he had. Shamgar was a farmer who killed 600 Philistines with an ox goad, a simple farming tool. Barnett used this story to illustrate that anyone can make a difference if they have a vision and are willing to take action.

Barnett explained that vision is a picture of your future that creates passion in you. He shared his own testimony of spending 40 days fasting and praying on a mountain behind Dream City Church. During that time, God gave him a clear vision for the future of the church, which led to explosive growth—from one campus to nine campuses in seven years and the creation of America's largest human trafficking relief organization.

Barnett challenged the congregation to join Dream City Church in a weekly fast every Tuesday through Wednesday for the entire month of January. He explained that fasting is not just about denying the flesh, but about creating space for God to speak and provide breakthroughs in difficult areas of life. He emphasized that Jesus said the hard things in life only come through prayer and fasting.

The Importance of Mental Clarity Through Fasting

Charlie Kirk added his perspective on fasting, noting that the neuroscience behind fasting is fascinating. He explained that when the body is in a fasted state, it redirects energy away from digestion and toward mental clarity. This is a survival mechanism designed to help humans focus and find food when it's scarce. Kirk shared that some of his greatest prayers and mental breakthroughs have occurred during the final hours of a fast.

He also addressed young people who struggle with anxiety and depression, encouraging them to try fasting as a way to slow down and reorient themselves toward God. Kirk referenced Philippians 4:6, which instructs believers not to be anxious but instead to present their requests to God through prayer and thanksgiving. He believes that fasting can help individuals experience the peace of God that transcends all understanding.

The Church's Role in Addressing Homelessness

During the Q&A session, a student from Colorado Christian University asked about the biblical response to the homelessness crisis. Pastor Barnett stated simply that if the church would be the church, America wouldn't have a homelessness problem. He argued that the church has in many ways failed to live out its calling to help the hurting, feed the hungry, and clothe the naked. Barnett shared that Dream City Church has taken a hands-on approach by buying hotels, opening recovery programs, and working to get people off drugs and alcohol.

Charlie Kirk added that he does not believe society should tolerate open-air homelessness. He argued that it's bad for communities, demoralizes the population, and creates health and safety risks. Kirk acknowledged that homelessness is a complex issue with many categories—those struggling with addiction, those with mental health issues, and those who simply don't want to stop being homeless. He advocated for a compassionate but firm approach, similar to what former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani implemented, where people are offered help but are not allowed to camp indefinitely on public streets.

The Case for Christ

In closing, Kirk and Barnett made a case for why 2022 should be the year when everyone in attendance gives their life to Christ or renews their commitment. Kirk shared his intellectual journey to faith, explaining that he came to believe in God through reason and evidence. He pointed to the laws of nature as proof that there must be a lawgiver. He also highlighted the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus, encouraging skeptics to examine the testimony of the apostles, the empty tomb, and the hundreds of witnesses who saw Jesus after His resurrection.

Pastor Barnett emphasized that Christ is the solid rock on which believers can stand. He warned against placing ultimate hope in anything that can change or be taken away, such as the stock market, relationships, or careers. He led the congregation in a prayer of salvation, inviting anyone who wanted to give their life to Christ to repeat after him.

Looking Ahead to Dream Conference 2022

Barnett announced that Dream City Church will be hosting Dream Conference 2022 in early February. The conference, themed "Stand," will bring together thousands of pastors from across America to learn how to grow their churches and take a stand in their communities. Charlie Kirk will be one of the featured speakers. Barnett emphasized that the hope of America lies in strong churches led by bold pastors who are unafraid to preach the whole truth of the Word of God.

The evening concluded with an invitation for everyone to join Dream City Church for their weekly prayer and fasting gatherings every Wednesday night in January. The gatherings include worship, teaching on prayer, and corporate prayer for breakthrough in the lives of individuals and the nation.
