Charlie Kirk Explains Why Big Government Sucks and How Free Markets Win on College Campuses

September 22, 2017

Charlie Kirk addresses the paradox of liberal professors claiming tolerance while suppressing dissenting views on college campuses. He discusses the decline in youth political engagement since the Obama era and introduces the messaging strategy "big government sucks" as an effective way to communicate conservative values to students. Kirk argues that young people can now witness the difference between free market capitalism and bureaucratic cronyism through everyday experiences with services like Uber, Netflix, and social media, making the case for individual liberty more tangible than ever before.

The Tolerance Paradox on College Campuses

Liberal professors often present themselves as champions of tolerance and open-mindedness, yet there's a glaring contradiction in their approach. They're tolerant of other beliefs—as long as those beliefs align perfectly with their own. This widespread phenomenon has created an environment where genuine intellectual diversity is stifled rather than celebrated.

Declining Youth Engagement Since the Obama Era

The current generation of young people is becoming increasingly apathetic toward political involvement. This stands in stark contrast to the enthusiasm that characterized youth engagement during Barack Obama's campaigns in 2008 and 2012. That generation wholeheartedly endorsed and rallied behind Obama with genuine excitement and passion.

The decline isn't just visible in voting trends. There's been a noticeable drop in activism, participation in local campaigns, and overall political engagement among young people. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for conservative messaging.

The Soundbite War and "Big Government Sucks"

Conservatives have consistently struggled with the soundbite war—the battle to communicate complex ideas in simple, memorable phrases. Throughout various conferences, the question has been raised repeatedly: How do you describe the failures of the current administration over the last six years, or big government in general over the last 40 years, in a way that resonates?

The solution came from a simple observation. Someone once said, "You know, big government really sucks." And that's exactly right. The phrase "big government sucks" emerged as an effective messaging tool, and it does indeed work remarkably well on college campuses. It captures in three words what conservatives stand for: individual liberty, freedom in the marketplace, and unrestricted exchanges between free people.

Free Markets on Your Smartphone

Young people today have a unique advantage that previous generations didn't have—they can experience the fruits of the free market on a firsthand basis through technology. Services like Netflix, Twitter, and Facebook demonstrate the power of innovation and consumer choice in ways that are immediately tangible.

The contrast between oligarchic bureaucratic crony capitalism and individual-based free market capitalism is literally visible on your smartphone. When you use Uber, you can see the difference between what transportation used to be, how much it used to cost, and how inefficient taxis were compared to the ride-sharing model. Everyone who uses these services understands this contrast completely and instinctively.

Empowering Youth to Advance Freedom

These trends are growing, and the key is being unafraid to articulate them clearly. The mission is to empower young people to advance these principles on college campuses. By connecting abstract economic concepts to everyday experiences, conservatives can make the case for free markets and limited government in ways that resonate with a generation that has grown up with unprecedented access to information and choice.

The path forward requires courage—the courage to speak plainly about the benefits of individual liberty and the failures of big government, and the commitment to equip the next generation with the tools and confidence to carry these ideas forward on campuses across the country.

[00:00] it's interesting the the liberal

[00:01] professors are very tolerant of other

[00:03] beliefs as long as you hold their own

[00:05] and this is widespread and it's a lot of

[00:08] young people unfortunately becoming

[00:10] increasingly apathetic as I mentioned my

[00:12] remarks

[00:13] our generation wholeheartedly endorsed

[00:16] and was excited and was enthusiastic

[00:17] about Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 and

[00:20] you've seen a decline not just in voting

[00:22] trends but you know activism and local

[00:25] campaigns and politics and some of the

[00:27] messaging that we use and it's all

[00:28] throughout the conference that we tried

[00:29] to synthesize how do you describe the

[00:31] Ailes of this administration over the

[00:33] last six years or big government for

[00:35] that manner the last 40 years how do you

[00:38] how do you describe that in a soundbite

[00:39] because we're always losing the

[00:40] soundbite war and we said somebody just

[00:42] one time said to me you know big

[00:43] government really sucks

[00:45] I'm like you're right so we came up with

[00:46] big government sucks and it does and

[00:48] it's it works really really well on

[00:50] college campuses to just really describe

[00:52] and say this is what we stand for we

[00:54] stand for individual liberty freedom in

[00:55] the marketplace and interchanges and I

[00:57] think it's being trends that young

[00:59] people are being able to experience the

[01:01] fruits of the free market and the

[01:03] first-hand basis whether it be over

[01:04] Netflix Twitter and Facebook you can see

[01:07] what the contrast between oligarchic

[01:09] bureaucratic crony capitalism and

[01:11] individual based free market capitalism

[01:13] literally on your smartphone when you

[01:15] use uber you can see the difference

[01:16] between what it used to be how much it

[01:18] used to cost and how inefficient taxis

[01:20] used to be and how Oberer and everybody

[01:22] in this room that uses it understands it

[01:23] completely and I think we're starting to

[01:25] see those trends grow and we just have

[01:27] to be unafraid to articulate them and

[01:29] empower our youth to advance it on these

[01:30] college campuses

[01:33] [Applause]
