Charlie Kirk Interviews Mike Huckabee on His Nomination as US Ambassador to Israel and the Abraham Accords

November 14, 2024

Charlie Kirk speaks with Governor Mike Huckabee about his nomination as US Ambassador to Israel, a position he describes as receiving an unexpected call from President Trump. Huckabee shares his lifelong passion for Israel dating back to 1973, his presence when Trump moved the embassy to Jerusalem, and his vision for extending the Abraham Accords. He emphasizes the strategic importance of the role and his commitment to representing the administration's policies in one of the world's most consequential diplomatic posts.

An Unexpected Honor

Governor Mike Huckabee shares the story of receiving an unexpected call from President Trump nominating him as US Ambassador to Israel. The call came almost exactly 24 hours before this conversation, and Huckabee admits he wasn't lobbying for the position. However, he describes it as the one position the president could have asked him to do that he was truly willing and ready to accept, given his lifelong passion for the state of Israel.

A Passion Dating Back to 1973

Huckabee's connection to Israel runs deep, beginning with his first trip in 1973 when he was just a month shy of his 18th birthday. That initial visit proved lifechanging, and since then, he has visited Israel probably a hundred times. Over the years, he has taken tens of thousands of people to visit Israel, developed relationships with most of the government officials there, and walked the country from Dan to Beersheba. He describes Israel as a place he truly loves, believing it is special because God made it special.

Without apology, Huckabee states he is a simple guy who believes the scripture from Genesis 12: those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed. He wants to be on the blessing side, not the curse side. For him, this nomination represents an extraordinary honor but also a very weighty responsibility that the president has asked him to undertake.

The Significance of Jerusalem

One of the most significant aspects of Huckabee's appointment is that he will serve in the ambassador's residence in Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv. Huckabee was present on the incredible day when the embassy was moved, and he recalls weeping because for years he had been praying some president would actually have the courage to make that move.

For years, presidents from both parties—Bill Clinton, George Bush, and others—had all promised they would move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. They never did, always finding an excuse or a reason, claiming it would create tension and hardship. Donald Trump did it.

Huckabee shares a memorable one-on-one visit with President Trump in the Oval Office during his daughter's time as press secretary. He thanked the president for moving the embassy, noting that most people didn't think Trump would ever do it because no one else had, and every bit of pressure from the State Department, from other nations and their leaders, and even from Senators and House members who had always voted for it, was for him not to do it. When Huckabee asked why he did it, Trump's response was classic: "Well, because I said I was going to do it, and it's the right thing to do."

That moment made Huckabee realize what an extraordinary blessing the country had in having Donald Trump at the White House. He was deeply wounded when the 2020 election was called the other way, but he expresses excitement that Trump is returning, ready to go and picking incredible people for his team. Huckabee believes Trump will have the most impactful and successful presidency perhaps in all of American history.

A Strategic Role, Not Ceremonial

Charlie Kirk emphasizes that some ambassadorships are ceremonial positions given to friends of the president or people who want a nice end to their career—perhaps to a Caribbean island, the Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands, or even Austria. The Ambassador to Israel is a completely different ball game.

This is not a ceremonial role. Huckabee will be actively involved in diplomacy, high-stakes negotiations, and representing American interests. He will be at the tip of the spear for all Western-Arab communications because they must go through the prism of American-Israeli relations. This isn't about getting a nice suntan in Jamaica; it's about being on the front lines of some of the most consequential geopolitical decisions.

Understanding the Strategic Landscape

Huckabee acknowledges the strategic nature of the role, noting that so much of world peace is made or broken in that little area of the Middle East, particularly that sliver of real estate called Israel. No bigger than the size of New Jersey, Israel occupies one six-hundred-forty-fourth of the land mass of the countries controlled by Muslim leadership. For every inch of Israeli land and real estate, there are 644 pieces of land controlled by Muslim countries.

When people say Israel needs to give up some land to attain peace, Huckabee calls it a dumb statement from people who have no idea what they're talking about.

Extending the Abraham Accords

The role Huckabee will play includes trying to help extend the Abraham Accords, which he believes President Trump never got proper credit for. The breakthrough was extraordinary and truly amazing, but there are pieces that still need to happen, particularly with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other countries. This will be part of what Huckabee hopes to play a role in.

Representing the President's Policies

Huckabee makes clear that the job of the ambassador is not to represent himself or put forth his own ideas. He will be there to represent this administration, this president, and the policies Trump was elected to carry out. When asked what he thinks he's going to want to do, his response is simple: he's going to want to do what the president wants him to do, because that's what an ambassador does.

Huckabee points to challenges Trump faced in his first term with people he had appointed to office who forgot that no one had elected them to anything. He cites the first Secretary of State as a good example. The only person who got elected on November 5th was Donald J. Trump, so he's the person the people have said is their leader. Anyone Trump appoints or employs has the job of carrying out the policies that he was elected by the American people to put forth.

Acknowledgment of Turning Point USA

Before diving into his nomination, Huckabee makes a point to thank Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA. He states he is convinced that without Turning Point USA, he's not sure Donald Trump would have won, and Trump certainly would not have won with the landslide and mandate he received. That mandate is without doubt largely due to the efforts that Turning Point has done across the country. On Inauguration Day, January 20th, Huckabee believes the organization should take a deep bow and recognize they did it.

Kirk responds humbly, attributing the success to the Lord and believing it was the hand of God. Huckabee agrees but adds that God's hands sometimes need a little help down here, and He calls on us to be His hands and His feet. Turning Point has been just that.

The conversation closes with Kirk expressing his hope to see Huckabee next year in Jerusalem, to which Huckabee responds he can't wait to host him and thanks Kirk for all he does.

[00:02] ambassador to Israel and I could tell

[00:04] you right now if Dennis was on the radio

[00:07] today he would be cheerleading with pom

[00:10] poms that Governor Mike Huckaby is the

[00:13] US ambassador to Israel uh Governor

[00:15] congratulations on that uh and tell us

[00:18] um the stakes what you plan to do and uh

[00:21] fill our audience in please well Charlie

[00:23] I appreciate it let me Begin by just

[00:25] saying thank you to you I'm convinced

[00:27] without uh Turning Point USA I'm not

[00:30] sure Donald Trump would have won he

[00:32] certainly would not have won with the

[00:33] landslide that he did and the Mandate

[00:36] that he goes in with is without doubt

[00:40] largely due to the efforts that Turning

[00:42] Point has done across the country so

[00:44] kudos to you my friend and all of the

[00:47] incredible people at Turning Point um

[00:50] you guys on Inauguration Day January

[00:54] 20th uh you ought to take a deep bow and

[00:57] and just recognize yes you did did it

[01:00] you did it well well thank you it's the

[01:02] Lord I really believe it was the hand of

[01:04] God but please continue well it was but

[01:07] you know God's hands sometimes need a

[01:08] little help down here and uh he calls on

[01:11] us to to be his hands and his feet and

[01:14] you guys have been just that I I'll tell

[01:16] you this has been a kind of a shocking

[01:20] 24 hours for me and it was almost

[01:22] exactly 24 hours ago when President

[01:24] Trump gave me the call I wasn't

[01:26] expecting it it wasn't something I'd

[01:28] been lobbying for uh but when he asked

[01:31] quite frankly the one position that the

[01:34] president could have asked me to do that

[01:36] I was willing and really ready to do uh

[01:39] because of my passion for the state of

[01:41] Israel which goes all the way back to

[01:44] 1973 that's when I made my first trip to

[01:47] Israel I was still a month shy of my

[01:49] 18th birthday and it was lifechanging

[01:53] for me and since that time I've been

[01:56] probably a hundred times to Israel I've

[01:58] taken tens of thousands of people to

[02:00] visit Israel gotten to know most of the

[02:03] government officials there uh I've

[02:05] walked from Dan to beerseba and have

[02:08] been throughout the country and it's a

[02:11] place I just truly love and I believe it

[02:15] is a special place because God made it

[02:17] special and so without any apology in

[02:20] saying this um you know I'm a simple guy

[02:22] I believe the scripture Genesis 12 those

[02:26] who bless Israel will be blessed those

[02:27] who curse Israel will be cursed I want

[02:30] to be on the blessing side not the curse

[02:32] side and this for me is an extraordinary

[02:35] honor but it's also a very weighty

[02:38] responsibility that the president has uh

[02:40] asked me to do and I am honored to do

[02:44] this for my country and for my

[02:47] president well governor and and let's

[02:49] not forget uh you are going to be in the

[02:51] ambassador's uh residence in Jerusalem

[02:54] not Tel Aviv and that is incredibly

[02:57] significant please explain to our

[03:00] audience well I was there when the

[03:03] embassy was moved on that incredible day

[03:05] I I wept because for years I'd been

[03:08] praying some president would actually

[03:09] have the courage to do this and every

[03:12] president and it goes back Democrats and

[03:14] Republicans Bill Clinton George Bush it

[03:16] didn't matter who all said they were

[03:18] going to move the embassy from Tel Aviv

[03:20] to Jerusalem they never did they always

[03:22] found an excuse or a reason oh it'll

[03:25] create tension and hardship Donald Trump

[03:27] did it and I'll never forget my daughter

[03:29] was press secretary I happen to be at

[03:32] the White House and I had a visit just

[03:33] one-on-one with President Trump uh in

[03:36] the Oval Office and we were chatting and

[03:39] I said Mr President thank you so much

[03:41] for moving the embassy um most people

[03:46] didn't think you'd ever do it because no

[03:47] one else has done it and I know that

[03:50] every bit of pressure was for you to not

[03:53] do it from the state department from

[03:54] other nations and its leaders um

[03:57] everywhere people said don't do it even

[03:59] the Senators and uh people in the house

[04:02] who always voted for it to happen deep

[04:04] down they were afraid of it so I asked

[04:06] him I said why did you do it Charlie

[04:09] I'll never forget what he said this is

[04:11] classic Trump and you know him very very

[04:13] well so you'll understand how accurate

[04:15] this

[04:16] is he looked at me he said well because

[04:20] I said I was going to do it and it's the

[04:22] right thing to do simple as that and I

[04:25] thought now that is an executive that is

[04:28] a leader that is a decision maker and I

[04:31] I just realized what an

[04:34] extraordinary blessing we had as having

[04:37] Donald Trump at the White House and I

[04:39] was hurt deeply wounded when uh the 2020

[04:43] election was called the other way but I

[04:45] got to tell you I'm ecstatic that he

[04:47] goes back in ready to go um picking some

[04:52] incredible people to be on his team

[04:55] totally and I believe he will have the

[04:57] most impactful and successful

[05:00] presidency perhaps in all of American

[05:03] History now I hope everyone understands

[05:05] some ambassadorships are ceremonial

[05:08] they're given as friends of the

[05:10] president people that kind of want a

[05:11] nice uh end to their career you could

[05:14] think of a Caribbean Island to the Turks

[05:16] and Kos Cayman Islands maybe even

[05:19] Austria ambassad to Israel is a

[05:22] completely different ball game everybody

[05:23] Governor can you explain you are

[05:25] actively involved in diplomacy in high

[05:28] stakes negotiations in representing

[05:31] American interests not just Israel but

[05:33] you are really at the tip of the spear

[05:35] for all Western Arab Communications

[05:38] because it has to go through the prism

[05:39] of American Israeli relations and so

[05:42] this is not just kind of okay Governor

[05:43] hucke you know get a nice Sunan down in

[05:47] Jamaica you are going to be on the front

[05:49] lines of some of the most consequential

[05:51] geopolitical decisions please Governor

[05:55] well it is a very strategic role because

[05:57] so much of World Peace is made or is

[06:01] broken in that little area of the Middle

[06:03] East particularly that sliver of real

[06:06] estate we called Israel no bigger than

[06:07] the size of New Jersey Israel occupies

[06:13] 1644th of the land mass of the countries

[06:16] that are controlled by Muslim leadership

[06:18] I mean that's staggering when you think

[06:20] about it so for every inch of Israeli

[06:24] land in real estate there are

[06:27] 644 pieces of land controlled by Muslim

[06:31] uh countries when people say Israel

[06:34] needs to give up some land to to attain

[06:36] peace they have no idea what they're

[06:37] talking about it's a dumb

[06:39] statement the role that I will play is

[06:42] to try to help extend the Abraham

[06:44] Accords which I don't think president

[06:45] Trump ever got proper credit for it was

[06:49] an extraordinary breakthrough truly

[06:52] amazing the Breakthrough that that

[06:54] presented and there are pieces of that

[06:57] that still need to happen particularly

[06:59] with Saudi Arabia with cter and with

[07:01] other countries and so that'll be part

[07:03] of uh what I hope to be able to play a

[07:06] role in but you know the job of the

[07:08] Ambassador is not to represent himself

[07:10] is not to uh so much put forth what I

[07:13] think uh I'll be there to represent this

[07:16] Administration this President and the

[07:18] policies that he was elected to carry

[07:21] out so as yeah I've been asked well what

[07:23] do you think you're going to want to do

[07:25] I said I'm going to want to do what the

[07:26] president wants me to do because that's

[07:28] what an ambassador does because uh one

[07:31] of the reasons he had some challenges in

[07:33] his first term there were people he had

[07:36] appointed appointed to office I think

[07:38] the first Secretary of State that he had

[07:40] is a good example who forgot that no one

[07:43] had elected him to anything the only

[07:47] person that got elected on November the

[07:49] 5th was Donald J Trump so he's the

[07:52] person that the people have said you're

[07:54] our leader anyone he appoints or

[07:58] employs it is our job to carry out the

[08:01] policies that he was elected by the

[08:04] American people to put

[08:08] forth Governor uh thank you for your

[08:11] leadership and I've always wanted to see

[08:14] this I Pray I'll see you next year in

[08:16] Jerusalem so thank Charlie I can't wait

[08:19] for you to come and I look forward to

[08:21] hosting you when you do thank you for

[08:23] all you do God bless you my friend
