Charlie Kirk Shot and Killed at Utah Valley University During American Comeback Tour Event
Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at Utah Valley University during what was supposed to be the first stop of his American Comeback Tour. At 12:20, a single gunshot rang out, striking Kirk in the neck as thousands gathered to hear him speak. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The shooter, believed to be dressed in all black and positioned on a nearby rooftop, remains at large as the FBI and local authorities piece together what happened. Two persons of interest were questioned and released. Witnesses describe the chaos and panic that ensued as attendees ran for their lives, uncertain where the shot came from or if more would follow.
A tragedy unfolded at Utah Valley University when political activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during an event on campus. Thousands of people had gathered to see Kirk for what was meant to be the first stop on his 'American Comeback Tour.' At 12:20, a single gunshot rang out. The bullet struck Kirk in the neck, and he fell to the ground. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities have described this as a targeted attack toward one individual, calling it a tragic moment for both the state of Utah and the nation. One official stated clearly that this was "a political assassination."
The Investigation and Search for the Shooter
Investigators are still searching for the killer. The shooter was believed to be dressed in all black and fired from the roof of a nearby building. Shortly after the shooting, a person of interest was taken into custody and seen in handcuffs in widely shared video footage. However, this individual was later found not to be involved in the shooting.
Not long after, the FBI took a second person of interest in for questioning. The FBI Director took to social media to announce that this second person of interest was also cleared and released.
Witness Accounts and Video Evidence
Hundreds of viewer videos have surfaced in the aftermath of the deadly shooting. Two videos stand out as investigators try to sort through how this shooting happened and who is responsible.
In the seconds after the shot was fired, one video captures a person running across a roof on top of the Losee Building. Investigators have confirmed that it's likely the shot was taken from the roof of a nearby building.
A UVU student shared another video that may give a different vantage point to the person on the roof, also mentioning seeing that individual run across the roof. Another viewer sent an image of a person standing in the exact same position.
Investigators are looking at security camera video from the university, but admit it doesn't paint a complete picture—just someone dressed in dark clothing.
Witness Reactions and the Chaos That Followed
Witnesses who spoke with media described the sheer panic of the moment. Some were as close as 10 to 15 feet away from Kirk when he was shot. Many describe hearing the shot, seeing the blood, Kirk slumping over, and the panic of not knowing where the shooting was coming from.
One witness said: "You always think it's never going to happen to me until it does." Another described the confusion: "In the moment not knowing what's going on. Everyone is around and it's like where are they?"
During the panic immediately after the shooting, one witness says he dove into one of the nearby fountains to protect himself, not knowing how many more shots would follow. Another witness described hearing "just a stampede of people running down the hallway."
Security Concerns and What Comes Next
Former Police Chief Chris Bertram explained that events like this have hours of planning, resources, and money invested to make sure they're safe for everyone. However, he noted that even with all the planning, outdoor venues can be difficult, especially when it comes to gun laws at a public university.
Bertram says state and federal officials will next be looking into how the shooter was able to pull this off. He emphasized that "this investigation is going to impact all of Utah. I imagine that this is going to be methodical, all these agencies involved to determine what the motive was."
As the investigation continues, it may take days before authorities start to get answers. Charlie Kirk's body has been taken to the medical examiner's office. Some mourners even lined the motorcade that took his body from the hospital.
One person at the scene expressed the sentiment many are feeling: "It's sad that it has to happen. You just hope that people can find a way to love others."
