The Warning From College Campuses
Charlie Kirk opened his CPAC address with a stark warning based on what he witnesses daily on college campuses across America. As someone who visits universities so others don't have to, Kirk identified a direct connection between campus ideology and the Democrat primary, where a self-described socialist was leading the race. The transformation of higher education into what he calls installations of indoctrination has created an entire generation taught to view America as fundamentally racist, bigoted, homophobic, and backwards.
Kirk pushed back against those dismissing the possibility of a Bernie Sanders presidency, reminding conservatives not to repeat the left's mistake of 2016 by underestimating an outsider populist candidate. As Andrew Breitbart taught, politics flows downstream from culture, and conservatives have been losing the cultural war in media, Hollywood, and academia for two decades. The strategy of the left, according to Kirk, centers on boosting turnout at universities through measures like same-day voting, making college campuses the battleground for this election and the next generation.
Turning Point USA's Growing Presence
Despite the challenges, Kirk shared positive developments. Turning Point USA now operates on 2,000 high school and college campuses across the country. Their sister organization, Students for Trump, has more affiliated chapters than Students for Bernie Sanders. This growth represents a counter-movement to the dominant left-wing ideology on campuses, though Kirk emphasized the fight is far from over.
Three Action Steps for Conservatives
Kirk presented three concrete actions every conservative can take to combat the indoctrination happening in education:
Stop Funding Your Alma Mater: Unless graduates attended institutions like Liberty University or Hillsdale College, Kirk urged them to cut off donations to their alma maters. These universities, he argued, use alumni funds to indoctrinate the next generation with ideas about open borders and Marxism, creating an endless supply of activists for candidates like Bernie Sanders.
Get Involved in School Board Races: Kirk emphasized that the left has systematically taken over school boards across the country. He called for conservatives to invest the same energy in local school board races as they do in national elections, particularly focusing on textbook selection and elementary-level education decisions.
Reconsider Four-Year College: Kirk challenged parents to ask not where their kids are going to college, but why they need to go at all. After visiting what are considered the best schools in the country, he stated he wouldn't send anyone he cares about to these institutions without being willing to play Russian roulette with their values. America needs more plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, police officers, firefighters, and veterans, and far fewer people hyper-educated in humanities, communications, and psychology who graduate saddled with debt and resentment toward their country.
The College Cartel
Kirk described higher education as a cartel that exists using taxpayer funding while taking the minds and futures of young people. This system serves not just to maintain a power structure and status quo, but to create a future political base of left-wing Democrat activists. He pointed to the fact that 95 percent of professors in higher education are self-identified left-wingers, questioning why conservatives continue to send their most prized possession—young people—into this environment.
The current Democrat leadership, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Ilhan Omar, represent a harbinger of things to come, Kirk warned. They demonstrate bitter resentment for America, just as the leading Democrat nominee has nicer things to say about literacy in Cuba than about the heroic history of the United States.
From Communism Abroad to Campuses at Home
Kirk traced the ideological shift to thirty years ago when America defeated communism in Europe and brought down the Berlin Wall. However, while communism was defeated abroad, it came straight to American college campuses and school boards. This infiltration has transformed educational institutions from places of learning into centers of activism.
The Teacher Union Problem and School Choice
Kirk identified teacher unions, specifically the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers, as a true cartel that has negatively impacted the hearts and minds of the next generation. He argued that these unions have immorally denied minority communities access to higher quality education. Challenging these unions and expanding school choice represents a critical path forward for conservatives.
Understanding Bernie Sanders' Appeal
When asked why a 78-year-old candidate excites young people, Kirk offered insight: Sanders is exactly like the intro professor to "How to Hate America 101." He speaks like that professor, looks like that professor, and is equally as angry as that professor. He presents himself as the crusader against everything wrong and unjust in society, the little guy against the big guy.
Kirk pointed out a fundamental contradiction in Sanders' message: he claims government is bought and paid for by the wealthy, the few, and the well-connected, yet wants to make that same government more powerful. Why, Kirk asked, would Sanders want to give more money, guns, healthcare, and control over education to a government he says is corrupt? The power structure Sanders criticizes would only become more powerful if he were elected.
President Trump's Historic Achievements
Kirk reminded the audience of what he considers a gift from God: President Trump's election in November 2016 and the results that followed. His list of accomplishments included:
- Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch
- 170 Circuit Court judges
- Record low Black, Latino, and Asian American unemployment
- 10 million Americans off food stamps
- Energy independence
- VA Accountability Act
- Right to Try legislation
- Prison reform
- Elimination of Qasem Soleimani and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
- Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital
- Recognition of the Golan Heights
- Speaking at the March for Life
- Cutting funding to Planned Parenthood
Kirk characterized this period as an American renaissance, a gift from the administration. However, he noted that one side wants to fundamentally transform one of the greatest blessings God has given his children: America itself.
The Mitt Romney Betrayal
Kirk didn't hold back on Senator Mitt Romney, encouraging the audience's negative reaction to his name. He accused Romney of lying to everyone who knocked on doors, made phone calls, and donated to his campaign, believing he would be a crusader against what Kirk called the Marxist president who preceded Trump. After begging for Trump's endorsement for his Utah Senate race, Romney voted for what Kirk termed a "sham unconstitutional impeachment."
Romney, according to Kirk, embodies the political class that President Trump ran against. The party of Mitt Romney was a party that didn't fight, wanted to preserve the ruling class, and failed to give the next generation confidence, courage, and conviction to stand for what is correct.
The MAGA Doctrine Versus the Status Quo
Kirk contrasted two visions for the conservative movement. The old way represents the status quo ruling class of Mitt Romney, characterized by open borders, allowing China to get rich, and being a technocratic governing ruling class. The alternative is what Kirk calls the "MAGA Doctrine"—a doctrine of American renewal and revival that believes America is the greatest country in the history of the world.
This doctrine embraces American sovereignty, believes in the working class, and represents people who shower before and after work. It's a conservative movement unafraid to challenge tech companies, Hollywood, media, and the cartel of colleges. This movement represents the people, not the Washington DC political ruling class. Kirk argued this is the conservative movement that will win in November against socialism.
True Rebellion on Campus
Kirk pointed out an ironic reality: wearing a Bernie Sanders shirt on campus gets thumbs up, high-fives, and invites to the coolest parties. True rebellion, according to Kirk, means wearing a Make America Great Again hat on campus. He challenged anyone wanting to see what real rebellion looks like to try walking around Brown, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, or UCLA with that hat.
For the first time, conservatives have a president who understands the seven mountains of cultural influence and the significance of standing in solidarity with grassroots activists. President Trump courageously signed a historic executive order to protect free speech on college campuses—one of the most important executive orders of his presidency, announced at CPAC the previous year.
The Choice Ahead
Kirk framed the 2020 election as a referendum on what America is: a mediocre socialist welfare Marxist country, or something greater? A country of victims or victors? Are Americans thankful or angry that they live in America? At the elemental level, this explains why students show up in high numbers for Sanders and why the left is doing what they're doing.
The dichotomy has never been more clear, Kirk argued. One side wants to fundamentally transform one of the greatest blessings God has given his children. He believed that if conservatives do their job, it won't even be close—though he noted that the fact the election might be close is itself an indictment of how far American culture has declined.
The Path to Victory
Kirk closed by emphasizing that every person in the audience plays an extraordinarily important role. President Trump will face attacks in unimaginable ways from now until November—manufactured narratives and stories building on previous attempts to spy on his campaign and impeach him starting just 14 minutes after his inauguration.
Culture will get the president reelected. Culture will win back the country. College campuses are the battleground for the hearts and minds of the next generation. Kirk committed to continuing his fight on these campuses from now until November, calling on everyone to do what they can to reelect the president and take back the country. The future of whether America remains a free Republic and constitutional republic or becomes a failed socialist experiment is being determined right now on high school and college campuses across the nation.

[00:00] on the main stage please welcome charlie
[00:03] Kirk
[00:22] thank you
[00:24] hello CPAC it's great to be here special
[00:29] thanks to Matt slap and Dan Schneider
[00:31] and the CPAC team for putting on another
[00:34] terrific event it is an honor to be here
[00:36] with so many freedom fighters from all
[00:38] across the country it seems they keep on
[00:40] finding ways to make this room get even
[00:42] bigger and bigger every single year I
[00:46] visit college campuses so you don't have
[00:48] to you're welcome I come with a warning
[00:58] and some insight what I see on college
[01:05] campus is every single day is no
[01:08] different than what's happening in the
[01:11] Democrat primary right now which is we
[01:14] have volunteered and since our next
[01:19] generation to installations and
[01:22] indoctrination to teach the next
[01:24] generation to hate our country and so I
[01:27] hear people all the time they say how on
[01:29] earth could a Bolshevik could a
[01:32] breadline advocate could a Marxist be
[01:35] leading the Democrat primary and I say
[01:36] have you visited a college campus at all
[01:38] in the last 20 years and what I see
[01:42] every single day are students that are
[01:44] being taught that our country is racist
[01:46] and bigoted and homophobic and backwards
[01:49] and they're being taught nothing but
[01:50] negatives about the greatest country
[01:52] ever to exist in the history of the
[01:54] world now there's a lot of positives I'm
[01:56] here to share with you today Turning
[01:58] Point USA is now on 2000 high school and
[02:00] college campuses across the country and
[02:03] as of today our students for Trump
[02:08] organization our sister organization has
[02:10] more affiliated chapters in groups than
[02:13] students for Bernie Sanders so
[02:18] but I come here with a warning because
[02:20] what I see on college campus is when I
[02:22] see happening on universities across the
[02:24] country I push back when people say well
[02:28] there's no way that Bernie Sanders could
[02:29] become presidents no he could win and I
[02:33] want every conservative activist in this
[02:35] room to get your laughs out of the way
[02:38] and get the mockery out of the way and
[02:40] then get deathly serious because we
[02:42] should not do with the lefted in 2016
[02:45] and dismiss an outsider populist
[02:48] candidate from thinking that person
[02:49] can't win the White House because as the
[02:52] great Andrew Breitbart taught us
[02:53] politics flows downstream from culture
[02:56] and if we're honest with ourselves we've
[02:58] been losing cultural last 20 years when
[03:00] losing in the media we've been losing in
[03:02] Hollywood have been losing in academia
[03:04] and all it's gonna take for the left to
[03:06] do is to boost turnout even higher on
[03:08] university campuses they're now putting
[03:10] all sorts of different measures to allow
[03:12] to try to get more and more left-wing
[03:14] students to embrace Marxism and to do
[03:18] same-day voting and I'll tell you right
[03:19] now that if the left is successful
[03:23] the college campuses are gonna be the
[03:25] battleground for this election and for
[03:27] the next generation and so here's what
[03:28] people say all the time with Charlie
[03:29] what can I do
[03:30] college campuses I don't really deal
[03:32] with it every single day well here's the
[03:33] first thing for every single person in
[03:35] this room please unless you went to
[03:37] Liberty University or Hillsdale
[03:39] Liberty's a great college stop giving
[03:41] money to your alma mater stop it
[03:43] cut them off they do not need your money
[03:46] these universities are indoctrinating
[03:55] the next generation around ideas of open
[03:58] borders and Marxism and where senator
[04:01] Sanders gets his base is a limitless
[04:05] supply of millions and millions of
[04:07] students that are entering our
[04:08] university system and they're being
[04:10] turned into activists and people say
[04:13] well where did this shift happen how did
[04:15] this happen well 30 years ago
[04:17] we beat communism and we brought down
[04:20] that Berlin wall but the calm we beat
[04:23] communism in Europe but then communism
[04:26] just came straight on our college
[04:27] campuses and it came into our school
[04:29] boards and that's
[04:30] second thing people say charlie what can
[04:31] I do because I want CPAC to be a place
[04:33] of action or a place where people make
[04:35] decisions to do something the left has
[04:38] continually and routinely taken over our
[04:40] school boards all across the country and
[04:42] if every single conservative in this
[04:44] room got as involved in school board
[04:46] races as we do with national elections
[04:48] our country would be in a much better
[04:49] place with getting involved in what
[04:51] they're doing at our textbooks getting
[04:53] involved what they're doing at the very
[04:54] elementary local level 'no sand the
[04:56] third thing that people can do as they
[04:58] say
[04:59] does your kid actually need to go to
[05:01] four-year college does i'll tell you
[05:04] going to some of the quote-unquote best
[05:06] schools in the country and visiting them
[05:08] i would not send anyone that I care
[05:10] about to those schools unless you are
[05:13] willing to play Russian roulette with
[05:14] their their values we need to ask our
[05:17] high school seniors hey why are you
[05:19] going to college not where are you going
[05:21] to college
[05:22] we need more plumbers and well there's
[05:24] electricians in HVAC and policemen and
[05:26] firefighters and veterans and we need
[05:31] far less people that are hyper educated
[05:34] in the humanities and communications in
[05:36] psychology but they know everything
[05:37] possible about why America is a flawed
[05:40] country and it seems as if they're
[05:42] they're the ones that can't find that
[05:44] are so unhappy and unsettled and they're
[05:46] saddled with student loan debt and so
[05:48] every single person in this room has to
[05:50] understand that higher education is the
[05:53] cartel of the colleges is that they
[05:56] exist using our taxpayer funding taking
[05:58] the minds and futures of our young
[06:00] people as a way to not just continually
[06:04] keep their power structure that a
[06:07] certain status quo but also to create a
[06:09] future political base of left-wing
[06:11] democrat activists and so as
[06:13] conservatives we have to ask ourselves
[06:15] the question if we know for certain that
[06:18] there indoctrinating the hearts and
[06:21] minds of the next generation if we know
[06:22] for certain that 95 percent of
[06:24] professors in higher education are
[06:26] self-identified left-wingers why is it
[06:28] that we continually send our most prized
[06:32] possession the most prized possession in
[06:35] our country is our young people and we
[06:37] send them to these universities we
[06:39] wonder well I wonder why senator Bernie
[06:41] Sanders is doing so well and I
[06:43] telling you right now I'm gonna do
[06:45] everything I possibly can to make sure
[06:47] that this president gets reelected
[06:48] everything I possibly can however when I
[06:54] go to these campuses I see a preview of
[06:58] where America is heading whatever
[07:01] happens on college campuses will soon
[07:03] happen in the halls of Congress
[07:05] Alexandria Kazuya Cortez and Rasheeda
[07:07] Talib and I Anna Presley in Olano Mar
[07:10] they are a harbinger for things to come
[07:12] they have bitter resentment for the
[07:15] greatest country ever to exist in the
[07:16] history of the world
[07:18] the leading Democrat nominee has nicer
[07:21] things to say about literacy in Cuba
[07:23] than the heroic history of the United
[07:26] States of America we have a dictator
[07:28] apologist that is the frontrunner the
[07:30] Democrat Party that is only possible
[07:32] when you lose the cultural institutions
[07:35] and so when I speak to conservatives
[07:37] this is my very clearly would the left
[07:40] continually send their kids to college
[07:42] if they ended up being conservatives of
[07:44] course not they would reconsider it in
[07:47] fact they would probably say we're not
[07:48] sending our kids here anymore we're
[07:49] gonna build our own institution that's
[07:50] exactly actually what they did they took
[07:52] over our university system they took
[07:54] over our education system at a
[07:55] fundamental at a fundamental level
[07:57] that's also why I'm a huge advocate for
[07:58] school choice and the left cannot and
[08:01] will not be able to argue for school
[08:03] choice in our country from I believe
[08:05] that the more that we're able to
[08:08] challenge the true cartel which is the
[08:11] National Education Association and the
[08:13] American Federation of Teachers unions
[08:15] and what they've done to the hearts and
[08:17] minds of the next generation and not
[08:18] allow specifically minority communities
[08:20] to be able to get hire to get a higher
[08:23] access to education is immoral and it is
[08:25] wrong and the more that we challenge the
[08:27] teacher unions and unions in this
[08:28] country the more we're gonna find
[08:30] success but I'll tell you a senator
[08:33] Sanders or whomever they nominate but
[08:35] it's looking increasingly likely like
[08:36] it's senator Sanders we're presented
[08:38] with an opportunity every election has a
[08:41] question of what exactly that that
[08:43] election is about this election is going
[08:45] to be a referendum on what is America is
[08:49] America a mediocre socialist welfare
[08:54] Marxist country of course not
[08:56] country of victims or are we a country
[08:58] of victors are we thankful that we live
[09:00] in America are we angry that we live in
[09:03] America and at the elemental level of
[09:05] why the left is doing what they're doing
[09:07] and why students are showing up in such
[09:09] high numbers for senator Sanders I get
[09:11] the question what Charlie doesn't make
[09:12] any sense he's he's 78 years old why is
[09:14] he exciting young people so much I say
[09:16] he's exactly like the intro professor to
[09:21] how to hate America 101 he speaks like
[09:23] that professor he kind of looks like
[09:25] that professor he's equally as angry as
[09:27] that professor and he presents himself
[09:30] as the crusader against everything that
[09:34] is wrong and that is unjust in our
[09:36] society it's the little guy against the
[09:37] big guy when in reality everything he
[09:40] stands for is the exact opposite he
[09:42] stands to make government more powerful
[09:44] he says that government is bought and
[09:46] paid for by the wealthy the few and the
[09:47] well-connected well then why senator
[09:49] Sanders would you want to make that very
[09:50] government more powerful why would you
[09:52] want to give more money to that
[09:53] government why would you want to give
[09:54] our guns to that government why would
[09:56] you want to give our healthcare to that
[09:57] government why would you want to give
[09:58] our education system that government the
[10:00] same government that he says is wealthy
[10:02] that is tube that is bought by the
[10:03] wealthy few in the well-connected and
[10:04] the lobbyists class is the power
[10:06] structure that he's only going to make
[10:08] even more powerful if he is elected and
[10:11] so we're presented a choice where we
[10:13] have been given a gift I truly believe
[10:14] this from God when President Trump won
[10:17] that election in November of 2016 and we
[10:21] have the results the show for it let us
[10:23] not forget Cavanaugh Gorsuch 170 Circuit
[10:27] Court judges Louis ever black
[10:29] unemployment Latino unemployment Asian
[10:31] American unemployment 10 million
[10:32] Americans off food stamps energy
[10:34] independence VA Accountability Act right
[10:36] to try prison reform kasam Salamone is
[10:39] dead al-baghdadi is dead the embassies
[10:41] in Jerusalem Golan Heights are
[10:43] recognized he spoke at the March for
[10:44] Life now twice we've cut planning the
[10:46] funding of Planned Parenthood America is
[10:49] in a renaissance period once again we've
[10:51] been given a gift from this
[10:52] administration and what they have done
[10:54] however the dichotomy has never been
[10:57] more clear that you have one side that
[10:59] wants to fundamentally transform one of
[11:02] the greatest blessings that God has
[11:03] given his children and that is this
[11:05] country and I do believe that if we if
[11:08] we do our job we can't it's
[11:10] even be closed by the way the fact that
[11:12] this election might even be closed is an
[11:14] indictment of how far we have allowed
[11:16] our culture to go but I'm telling you
[11:18] that where this where the future of
[11:20] whether we're gonna be a Free Republic
[11:21] in a constitutional republic or whether
[11:23] we are going to be a failed socialist
[11:25] experiment it's happening right now in
[11:28] high school and college campuses those
[11:30] are the battlegrounds of the heart and
[11:32] hearts and minds of tomorrow and so what
[11:35] we are doing every single day and what I
[11:36] know all of you are equally as
[11:37] passionate about to fight for that next
[11:39] generation to be able to convince them
[11:41] is in my opinion one of the most
[11:44] important endeavors in the entire
[11:45] country and I'll tell you this is
[11:47] exactly why senator Sanders goes to
[11:49] college campus after college campus but
[11:51] opposite of what the media might lead
[11:53] you to believe
[11:53] president Donald Trump has empowered a
[11:58] resurgence of conservatism on college
[12:01] campuses across the country the exact
[12:03] opposite of what the media might lead
[12:05] you to believe I'm gonna tell you why
[12:07] the Republican Party of Mitt Romney
[12:12] correct answer by the way
[12:14] correct every time his name is mentioned
[12:17] you should respond that way because he
[12:20] lied to every single person in this room
[12:22] that knocked on doors for him that made
[12:24] phone calls for him that donated his
[12:27] campaign because we thought that he was
[12:30] going to be a crusader against the
[12:32] Marxist president that preceded Donald
[12:34] Trump and now he asks and he begs for
[12:36] the endorsement of Donald Trump for the
[12:38] Senate Utah and then he goes in votes
[12:39] for that sham unconstitutional
[12:41] impeachment
[12:45] he embodies the very same political
[12:47] class that President Trump ran against
[12:49] but the party of Mitt Romney was a party
[12:51] that did not fight it was a party that
[12:54] wanted to preserve the ruling class it
[12:56] was a party that did not give the next
[12:59] generation confidence and courage and
[13:02] conviction to stand for what is correct
[13:04] and I can tell you when students on
[13:06] college campuses wear those beautiful
[13:08] make America great again hats and I'll
[13:11] tell you if you want to be a rebel on a
[13:13] college campus wearing a Bernie Sanders
[13:17] shirt will get you thumbs up high-fives
[13:19] and invites to all the coolest parties
[13:20] you want to be a rebel wear that hats on
[13:23] a college campus you want to see what
[13:26] true rebellion is try walking around
[13:30] Brown Yale Princeton Stanford UCLA with
[13:32] that hat
[13:33] but I'll tell you finally we have a
[13:35] president that understands the seven
[13:37] mountains of cultural influence finally
[13:39] we have a president that understands the
[13:40] significance of standing yes I'm going
[13:43] to use a term in solidarity with the
[13:46] grassroots activists of our country
[13:47] that's that see that college
[13:49] conservatives are under attack and
[13:51] president Trump courageously signed a
[13:54] historic executive order to protect free
[13:57] speech on college campuses across the
[13:58] country there's a year ago at CPAC he
[14:01] made that announcement one of the most
[14:04] important executive orders that he has
[14:05] signed in his presidency and so America
[14:09] has a choice the left we know exactly
[14:12] where they're going to go however as we
[14:15] look into this election and even in
[14:17] selections to come we have to ask
[14:19] ourselves a question as a conservative
[14:20] movement are we going to revert back to
[14:22] the party of the status quo ruling class
[14:24] of Mitt Romney of open borders making
[14:29] China continually get rich and just
[14:31] being a technocratic governing ruling
[14:33] class or are we going to learn from what
[14:34] I call the magadh doctrine the magg a
[14:38] doctrine which is a doctrine of American
[14:40] renewal revival one that America is the
[14:43] greatest country in the history of the
[14:44] world
[14:44] one of American sovereignty that
[14:46] believes in the working class a
[14:48] conservative movement that believes in
[14:50] people that shower before work and after
[14:52] work a conservative movement that is not
[14:55] afraid to challenge the tech companies
[14:57] Hollywood
[14:59] Media not afraid to challenge the cartel
[15:02] of the colleges that's a conservative
[15:04] movement that's going to represent the
[15:06] people not the Washington DC political
[15:09] ruling class and that is a conservative
[15:11] movement that will win in November as we
[15:13] go up against socialism so in closing
[15:18] every single one of you play an
[15:21] extraordinarily important role the
[15:23] president is going to get attacked in
[15:25] ways that we cannot imagine from now
[15:27] till November they will make up
[15:29] narratives manufacturer stories and
[15:30] they're already beginning it in ways we
[15:32] could never imagine they've already
[15:34] tried to impeach him they spied on his
[15:36] campaign pathological resistance are 14
[15:39] minutes after his inauguration culture
[15:42] will get this president reelected
[15:45] culture will win back our country
[15:47] college campuses are the battleground
[15:50] for the hearts and minds for the next
[15:53] generation I'm gonna keep fighting on
[15:54] them from now to November I know every
[15:57] single one of you and do what you can
[15:58] and we will get this president reelected
[16:00] and take back this country thank you
[16:02] thank you so much everybody thank you
