Frank Turek Shares What Happened After the Shot Rang Out on September 10th for Charlie Kirk
Frank Turek stood 25 feet from Charlie Kirk when tragedy struck on September 10th. As Charlie's mentor in Christian apologetics and someone who viewed him as a son, Frank witnessed the immediate aftermath and rode in the SUV as the security team fought to save him. In this powerful tribute, Frank shares intimate details of those final moments, explains why Charlie is in heaven, and issues a challenge to everyone watching: What are you going to do with your life now? This isn't just a memorial, it's a call to action that honors Charlie's legacy and the gospel he believed in.
Frank Turek begins by explaining why he was standing just 25 feet from Charlie Kirk on September 10th when the shot rang out. About five years prior, Charlie had asked Frank to mentor him in the evidence for Christianity—one of Frank's areas of expertise. As Frank notes, it's difficult to mentor someone smarter than you, but Charlie's humility surpassed even his intellect. The few things Frank knew that Charlie didn't, Charlie wanted to learn.
When the shot fired, Frank's instinct was to step toward Charlie, but the security team was on him immediately. Viewing Charlie as a son, Frank ran toward the security team and together they rushed to the SUV.
Inside the SUV: A Frantic Fight for Life
Frank describes the scene inside the vehicle with vivid detail. Justin was driving, Dan was in the front seat with the GPS, Rick was to Frank's left holding Charlie's head, and Brian was at Charlie's feet. Charlie was so tall they couldn't even shut the door. Frank was perched over the back seat, and while the team administered first aid, Frank admits his role seemed to be yelling.
Despite every effort to save him, Charlie was already gone. His face was looking at Frank, but he wasn't looking at him—he was looking past him right into eternity. Frank later learned that Charlie felt no pain and died instantly. But they had to try to bring him back.
Why Charlie Kirk Is in Heaven
Frank makes it clear that Charlie is in heaven—not because he was a great husband and father, not because he saved millions of students from darkness on college campuses, not because he changed minds and chased votes to save the country, and not because he sacrificed himself for his Savior. Charlie Kirk is in heaven because his Savior sacrificed himself for Charlie Kirk.
Frank explains that there are only two things you can receive in the afterlife: justice or grace. He asks whether anyone wants justice from an infinitely just being, answering that he wants grace. The only way to receive grace from an infinitely just being is for Him to punish an innocent substitute in our place. But where can such an innocent substitute be found among fallen humanity?
The solution, Frank explains, is that this infinitely just and infinitely loving God added humanity to His deity. He came to earth and allowed the creatures who rebelled against Him to torture and kill Him so He could place their punishment upon Himself. By trusting in Him, every person can be forgiven and given His righteousness. This is the greatest story ever told, Frank declares, and it happens to be true. There's evidence for it, and Charlie knew it.
Charlie's Purpose: Making Heaven Crowded
Frank emphasizes that Charlie understood life wasn't about money, sex, power, or prestige. Charlie knew the purpose of life is to know Jesus and to make Him known—to make heaven crowded. Charlie's eyes were fixed on eternity.
Then Frank turns the question to the audience: Where have your eyes been fixed? What have you been doing with your lives? What are you going to do now?
A Tsunami of Good and a Force of Nature
In every evil, Frank notes, God brings forth ripples of good. In this case, He's bringing a tsunami of good. If anyone thinks a martyrdom will stop this movement, Frank points to Erika Kirk as a force of nature. He jokes that every morning when Erika wakes up, the devil shrieks, "Oh no, she's awake again."
Frank closes with a challenge to honor Jesus, honor Charlie, and honor Erika. He calls on everyone to live in such a way that when they wake up every morning, the devil shrieks, "Oh no, they're awake again. They're born again."
