Frank Turek's Personal Account of Charlie Kirk's Final Days and the Day He Died

Christian apologist Frank Turek, who mentored Charlie Kirk for five years and was standing near him when he was shot, delivers an extended personal account of Kirk's character, faith, and final days, describing it as the most difficult show he has ever recorded. Turek recounts how Kirk first reached out to him in 2020, details Kirk's private devotion to scripture, family, and the gospel, and shares stories illustrating his courage, humility, loyalty, and refusal to compromise his beliefs for donor money. He walks through the morning of September 10th, debunks an online conspiracy theory suggesting he signaled the shooter, and gives a detailed, firsthand account of the moment Kirk was shot, the frantic drive to the hospital, and the staff and security team members he calls heroes for their composure in the chaos that followed. Turek says Kirk died instantly and felt no pain, and previews a message Erika Kirk asked him to share at Kirk's memorial service at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix.

Opening With Grief

Frank Turek opens by calling this the most difficult show he has ever recorded, explaining he was present when Charlie Kirk was shot and has barely slept in the days since. He thanks the thousands of people who have reached out with condolences and previews that he will share a message Erika Kirk asked him to deliver at Kirk's memorial service at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, where more than 85,000 people had RSVPed within three days of the shooting.

How Turek and Kirk First Connected

Turek reads aloud an email Charlie Kirk sent his ministry, Cross Examined, on January 18th, 2020, when Kirk was 26 years old, asking to connect because Turek's apologetics work had influenced his teaching. Turek explains that he later mentored Kirk specifically in Christian apologetics, describing Kirk's intellect as matched only by his humility.

Charlie Kirk's Devotion to His Faith

Turek describes Kirk as someone who centered his entire life, public and private, on Jesus Christ, recounting that Kirk turned away donors who wanted him to downplay his faith for political reasons. He shares scripture verses Kirk regularly sent him, including passages on peacemaking, holiness, and grace, and replays a clip of Kirk telling a student that the only question that matters in someone's final moments is who Jesus Christ is.

Family as a Second Priority

Turek describes Kirk's devotion to his wife, Erika, and their children, recounting a walk two nights before the shooting during which Kirk discussed the resurrection of Jesus and the importance of marriage and family. He mentions an upcoming book Kirk wrote making the case for observing the Sabbath as a family practice.

Courage, Humility, and Talent

Turek recounts Kirk acknowledging he knew people wanted him dead but refusing to let that stop him from engaging with students in public, open-air settings. He describes Kirk as deeply humble despite his success, frequently deflecting praise to his team, and highlights Kirk's skill as a coalition builder who kept figures like Ben Shapiro, Mark Levin, and Tucker Carlson aligned despite their disagreements.

Integrity Under Pressure

Turek recounts an instance in which a major donor threatened to pull funding from Turning Point USA over a disputable theological statement Kirk had made, and Kirk refused to compromise his position for the money. Turek connects this to the Modesto Manifesto, a set of integrity principles around sex, money, and power historically associated with Billy Graham's ministry, noting Kirk lived by these principles without having previously heard the term.

The Morning of September 10th

Turek describes traveling with Kirk and TPUSA staffer Blake Neff to Utah Valley University, including a stop where Kirk addressed a local entrepreneurs' group, and recounts viewing drone footage of the venue beforehand and expressing unease about the number of surrounding buildings, though Kirk did not consider canceling the event.

Debunking a Viral Conspiracy Theory

Turek directly addresses and denies an online theory claiming a man in a white hat, identified online as himself, was signaling the shooter using hand gestures. He explains he was filming the event on FaceTime with his son and daughter-in-law and argues the theory is nonsensical, noting a sniper would not need hand signals from someone in the crowd.

The Moment of the Shooting

Turek describes hearing a single shot ring out while Kirk was answering a question about transgender violence, watching Kirk's security team immediately move to him, and ducking for cover before realizing what had happened. He says he had long feared something like this could happen and ran toward the vehicle as Kirk's security team moved him to safety.

The Drive to the Hospital

Turek describes climbing into the back of the SUV alongside Kirk's security team, members of whom he names as Justin, Dan, Rick, and Brian, as they drove roughly four miles to the hospital with the door open because Kirk's height prevented it from closing. He says the team tried to control the bleeding and that he attempted CPR, but recounts being told afterward that Kirk had died instantly and felt no pain, with his eyes already fixed beyond this world.

Arrival at the Hospital

Turek says hospital staff briefly restored a pulse, prompting a short window of hope, before a surgeon emerged roughly 20 to 30 minutes later to confirm Kirk had died from a catastrophic wound.

Naming the People He Calls Heroes

Turek praises several members of Kirk's team for their composure in the aftermath, including 23-year-old chief of staff Mikey McCoy, who coordinated with the White House, law enforcement, and funeral arrangements within hours, as well as Katherine Locastro, Andrew Kolvet, Danny Phillip, Tyler Bowyer, and members of Kirk's security detail, crediting them with handling logistics with extraordinary professionalism despite their own grief.
