Judge Tony Graf Rules on Transcript Release and Press Access in Tyler Robinson Case
Judge Tony Graf has issued two new rulings in the case against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk, both centered on how much of the proceedings the public will be allowed to see. Graf agreed to release a redacted transcript from a closed-door hearing held back in October, with courtroom security measures redacted to protect those involved, while the corresponding audio recording won't be available for about two weeks. In a separate ruling, Graf ordered attorneys to notify press members who have requested it whenever a motion is filed to close a future hearing, though the media still won't be permitted to argue against those closure motions in court. The question of whether cameras will be allowed inside the courtroom once the trial begins remains unresolved, an issue Charlie Kirk's widow, Erika, has spoken out on directly, arguing cameras should be present. Robinson, charged with aggravated murder and facing a possible death penalty, is next expected to appear in person on January 16th.
Judge Tony Graf Issues Two New Rulings in the Tyler Robinson Case
Judge Tony Graf has handed down two new rulings in the case of Tyler Robinson, the man accused of murdering Charlie Kirk. Robinson appeared virtually, off camera, from the Utah County Jail during the hearing.
A Redacted Transcript From a Closed-Door October Hearing
Graf agreed to release a redacted transcript from a closed-door hearing held back in October, with courtroom security measures discussed during that hearing removed from the public record.
"The safety and well-being of all involved in this matter outweighs the interests of the public that are served by open court records," Graf said. The transcript is expected to be released by the end of the day, while the corresponding audio recording will not be available for about two weeks.
Press Notification Required Before Future Hearings Are Closed
In a second ruling, Graf ordered attorneys to notify any members of the press who have requested it whenever a motion is filed to close a future hearing to the public. However, the media will not be permitted to argue against those closure motions in court.
"The judge is being very deliberative, as is his reputation. He said, look, the media does have an interest here. The public has a right to access, not just under federal law, but under state law," one observer said of the ruling.
Cameras in the Courtroom Still Undecided
No ruling has yet been made on whether cameras will be allowed in the courtroom once the trial begins. Charlie Kirk's widow, Erika, has been outspoken on the issue, arguing that cameras should be permitted to record the proceedings.
Robinson's Next Court Appearance
Robinson is charged with aggravated murder and could face the death penalty if convicted. He is expected to appear in person for his next court hearing on January 16th.
