Community Mourns Loss of Conservative Activist
Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and prominent conservative activist, was shot and killed at Utah Valley University during a speaking event. The tragedy unfolded on a Wednesday afternoon, leaving approximately 3,000 students who came to hear him speak traumatized by the experience.
A makeshift memorial has formed outside Utah Valley University, where a steady stream of people have been stopping throughout the day to pay their respects, add to the memorial, and process the overwhelming emotions surrounding Kirk's death.
Visitors Pay Respects at Memorial Site
Brena Jenkins was among those who stopped at the memorial. She had originally planned to attend Kirk's speaking event but made a last-minute decision not to go. Reflecting on what could have been, Jenkins shared her thoughts about the narrow escape.
"Knowing that I would have been here with my son, knowing that I would have had to run for my life with my child, I just I don't know if that's trauma that I'd be able to process. And I feel so badly that 3,000 students experienced that," Jenkins said.
Kelly and Brad Kahune traveled from Arizona to Utah with their children specifically to visit the memorial site. The Arizona couple wanted their family to witness and feel the significance of what happened.
"To have something so sad happened, I feel like I wanted to just come and see and feel and bring my kids with me and um feels like something kind of changed when he died," one of the Kahunes shared.
Spiritual Support for Grieving Community
Chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team have been present at the memorial, providing spiritual support and praying with those who come to mourn. Their presence has offered comfort to a community struggling to make sense of the violence that took Kirk's life.
One visitor expressed hope for healing and unity in the aftermath of the tragedy: "I hope that we can come to an understanding that we're all children of God and that we need to be united. We're Americans. We're brothers. We're sisters. We're together in this."
Campus Remains Closed as Investigation Continues
Utah Valley University has remained closed following the shooting, with crime scene tape still surrounding parts of the campus. The university is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday as investigators continue their work.
The suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, is currently in jail and is set to appear in court on Tuesday to face charges related to Kirk's death.
Funeral Services Scheduled in Arizona
Charlie Kirk's funeral will take place on Sunday, September 21st, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The large venue reflects the significant impact Kirk had on the conservative movement and the thousands of young Americans he reached through Turning Point USA.
The memorial service will give family, friends, supporters, and those whose lives were touched by Kirk's work an opportunity to gather and honor his memory and legacy.
