Newt Gingrich Explains Trump's Historic Victory and the Profound Realignment of American Politics

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich breaks down the historic 2024 election victory of Donald Trump, explaining how the billionaire became the champion of working Americans and won the popular vote while carrying unprecedented support from black, Hispanic, and young voters. Gingrich frames the win as the culmination of a decades-long populist conservative movement, from Goldwater to Reagan to the Tea Party, that finally repudiated establishment Republicans and Democrats alike. He discusses how Trump survived assassination attempts, lawfare, and media assaults to deliver on policy promises that resonated with everyday Americans concerned about inflation, border security, and values.

A Victory Written in the Stars

Charlie Kirk opens by sharing a text message exchange with Speaker Newt Gingrich from the Monday before the election. Kirk asked, "Do you think we are going to win?" Gingrich's simple reply: "Yes." That confidence proved prophetic as Donald Trump secured not just an Electoral College victory, but the popular vote—a moral authority that has left the left "much less strident" and "confused" since election day.

Gingrich frames the 2024 election as "an amazing coming together of two different realities." On one side, Democrats had failed on performance, policy, and values, and the country knew it. On the other stood a candidate who had spent nine years enduring an assassination attempt, relentless assault from the left, and constant media lies—yet was still standing. In a dangerous world, Americans chose who they wanted as commander-in-chief.

The Shallow Incompetence of the Opposition

According to Gingrich, Kamala Harris "disadvantaged herself because she was so shallow and so incompetent and so incapable of explaining anything." Meanwhile, people gradually concluded that Trump had been "a pretty darn good president." Things had been better under his administration—Americans could afford more gasoline and groceries, and neighborhoods weren't "dominated by Venezuelan street gangs."

Gingrich recalls the gradual shift through October toward Trump, which he and others expected. At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he remembers talking with Chris LaCivita, comparing notes about campaigns they'd been in. Both concluded: "We're going to win this thing because both on performance and on values the country is going to ultimately repudiate" the Democratic agenda.

The Grassroots Movement That Changed Everything

Gingrich credits the groundwork laid by grassroots organizers, specifically acknowledging Charlie Kirk's role: "The work you did at the grassroots, the people you turned out, the young people you engaged with debates—that was a big piece of this."

But the truly significant development wasn't just that Trump won. He carried a majority of the American people, giving him moral authority. "The American people will say okay, he really is the president of the American people," Gingrich explains. The victory was so decisive that results came on election night itself—not four or five days later as in 2020.

A Historic Realignment Across Demographics

The Trump phenomenon defied expectations across every demographic. He improved with black Americans, Hispanic Americans, and young Americans, sweeping the Rust Belt with almost every county moving substantially to the right. President Trump defied entrenched GOP orthodoxy on major issues, specifically immigration and trade.

Gingrich highlights a stunning example: "Donald Trump won the most Hispanic county in America, Starr County, 98% Hispanic." This result confounded "all these Harvard and Yale elitists," what Scott Rasmussen called "the elite 1% and their vision of the world."

The Death of the Old Republican Party

What Americans are witnessing, according to Gingrich, is "a profound breakup of the old Republican party." The people who were establishment Republicans "are totally repudiated by the rise of a genuinely populist conservative Republican party." This explains the "bitter anger" from figures like Liz Cheney—"their world is dying."

Gingrich traces this populist conservative lineage back through history: "This really goes all the way back to Goldwater, goes back to Reagan's amazing speech in 1964, 'A Time for Choosing,' which you can get on YouTube if you've never seen it. Then the rise of Reagan, then we came along with the Contract with America, then the Tea Party movement picked it up, and Trump came to personify" this tradition.

The Billionaire Champion of Working Americans

The irony isn't lost on Gingrich that Trump is "a genuine billionaire" whose "instinct is to take on the establishment." As a result, everyday working Americans rallied to him "because candidly they'd all been ripped off by the establishment."

How did the establishment sell out working Americans? Gingrich lists the ways:

  • Building factories in China and Mexico instead of America
  • Pushing radical values
  • Allowing open borders that let Venezuelan and El Salvadoran gangs commit crimes, including the rape of a five-year-old in Long Island

"These things aren't made up, these aren't scare stories, these are news, these are real things," Gingrich emphasizes. People with common sense looked around and said, "That ain't working, that's not a future I want for my family."

The Champion Versus the Candidate

Gingrich explains a critical distinction that the left never understood: "When you have the champion of a movement, they're not a candidate. Candidates are different animals." Kamala Harris was a candidate with no movement. Donald Trump was a champion.

"When your champion is attacked, you move towards them, you want to protect them, you want to prop them up," Gingrich says. With a candidate, voters might waver, but "if it's your champion, you are sure."

This explains why every attack backfired. "Every time the left cheated—every time from Russia Russia to the FBI to the investigations to the two phony impeachments to the phony lawfare to being shot—every time, people, his support grew as people said, 'Wait a second, if they fear him that much, maybe he's my guy.'"

A Campaign Built on Policy, Not Platitudes

Charlie Kirk asks Gingrich to address how Donald Trump gave people something to vote for, not just something to vote against. Gingrich lists Trump's policy framework:

  1. 47 videos outlining specific policies
  2. A clean platform of 20 big ideas, similar to the Contract with America
  3. Every rally discussing principled ideas: stopping inflation, creating economic growth, controlling the border

"If you look at who talked policy, it was Donald J. Trump," Gingrich states. Focus groups showed the contrast repeatedly: "She's just babbling, she won't tell you what she really believes, you can't trust her." About Trump, they'd say, "I don't always like what he does, but I love what he stands for, I love his policies, and I'm with him."

That sentiment grew throughout October, creating momentum that was palpable as people thought about their choice and made their decision.

The Hand of Providence

Kirk reflects on the Republican National Convention, which took place just three days after the assassination attempt on Trump's life. He and Gingrich almost got tearful at the time, feeling "it was the hand of God on this movement."

Gingrich shares his immediate reaction to the shooting: "I was there that Saturday and went over and did Fox and I was on with Sean and I said, you know, I think this is providential. If he had not moved his head turning away from looking at that board back, if he had not moved his head at exactly that second, the bullet would have entered his brain and killed him. Now that's providential."

He draws a parallel to history: "Both Reagan and Pope John Paul II had been shot, and when they got together for the first time, they compared their thoughts about being shot and God sparing them, and they decided that God had spared them to defeat the Soviet Empire."

According to Gingrich, "Trump was deeply affected by being shot. I think he believes that God gave him a purpose, which was to save America, and I think he's a better man for how he has responded to that experience."
