UVU Students Return to Campus One Week After Charlie Kirk Shooting at Utah Valley University

Students at Utah Valley University returned to class one week after conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed in a campus courtyard. The site of the tragedy remains largely unchanged, with the university replacing grass with bricks but maintaining the original design. Mental health professionals are offering free counseling services as students grapple with returning to a campus now marked by political violence. The university has announced a vigil for unity and free expression, while Kirk's funeral will be held at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, with President Trump expected to attend.

UVU Campus Reopens After Tragedy

Students at Utah Valley University returned to class one week after conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on campus. The courtyard where the shooting occurred remains a visible and painful reminder of the tragedy that unfolded in the center of campus.

"That spot just right there. One shot and he died," said one student, pointing to the location. "I'm almost graduated, but I actually looked at transferring just because it's kind of hard to go to a school and this spot specifically with what happened now is always a reminder."

Mental Health Support Offered to Campus Community

The center of campus has become the center of focus regarding political violence for the university community. Brady Kle with Tangible Mental Health is among numerous clinics offering free mental health services to students, staff, and the community.

"It's going to be incredibly difficult for the students this week," Kle said. When asked whether students should avoid the space or if it should be transformed, Kle noted, "Eventually that space might have to be transformed because it's such a significant spot there on campus. I've heard that they're actually doing some things to transform that space which I think is a great idea to try and hopefully change at least some aspects of that area."

Physical Changes Made to Shooting Site

The university has made some changes to the location where Charlie Kirk was killed. Officials pulled up the grass in the spot and laid bricks over it, though the overall design of the courtyard remains the same.

"Awkward knowing that, but I think as time passes on, you kind of get used to the fact knowing that that happened there. It's kind of crazy," one student said.

The university has not announced whether they plan a permanent memorial or statue at the location, or if additional changes to the courtyard are being considered.

Vigil and Funeral Services Planned

Utah Valley University is hosting a vigil for unity on Friday at the UCCU Center in Orem. President Astrid Tuminez calls this event "a stand for free expression and unity." The vigil will be open to the public, with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. and the event starting at 4:00 p.m.

Funeral services for Charlie Kirk will be held Sunday at State Farm Stadium just outside of Phoenix, Arizona. The event starts at noon local time, and President Trump has said he will be in attendance.
