Memorial Service Draws Hundreds to Veterans Park

Hundreds of people gathered at Veterans Park in Washington City for a memorial service honoring Charlie Kirk, the political activist who was recently assassinated. The Sunday evening event brought together community members to reflect on Kirk's legacy and the values he championed throughout his life and career.

Utah Tech President Emphasizes Unity and Discourse

Utah Tech University President Shane Smeed served as one of the evening's main speakers, delivering a message focused on unity amid political disagreement. Smeed stressed the importance of civil discourse even when people hold different views.

"And we're not always going to be in agreement with everything. And so we have to have this type of discourse. We have to be able to disagree on topics, especially those topics that are meaningful and significant and they bring value to our community and to our great country," Smeed told the assembled crowd.

Organizer Recalls Personal Encounters with Kirk

The memorial was organized by Jordan Hess, Washington City Legislative Affairs Director, who had the opportunity to meet Kirk in person while working in Washington DC. When asked about his personal impressions of Kirk, Hess described him as "very convicted, but also just a fun-loving, genuine person who genuinely loved talking to people and listening and debating and sharing ideas."

Coach Praises Kirk's Commitment to Open Dialogue

Dixie High School soccer coach Travis Wilkinson shared his perspective on what made Kirk's approach to political discourse special. Wilkinson praised Kirk's willingness to create space for opposing viewpoints and engage in authentic conversation.

"And for me, Charlie Kirk embodied that to be able to put himself out there and be vulnerable and and even quiet the crowd to allow contradictory opinions to approach a microphone and have a conversation. And I feel like that he was just doing something that we all feel a super important part of kind of our political process. It wouldn't matter if it was conservative or liberal. That's something that we should all hope that we can protect and and do so freely without fear," Wilkinson said.

Community Demonstrates Core Values

The event reflected the character of Washington City itself, according to organizers and speakers. "We're a peaceful family centered, God-loving community. And I think that tonight demonstrated that," one speaker noted, highlighting how the memorial embodied the community's commitment to respectful dialogue and peaceful gathering even in the face of tragedy.
